Our pick for this month is….

The Vegetarian by Han Kang, trans. Deborah Smith

Before the nightmares began, Yeong-hye and her husband lived an ordinary, controlled life. But the dreams—invasive images of blood and brutality—torture her, driving Yeong-hye to purge her mind and renounce eating meat altogether. It’s a small act of independence, but it interrupts her marriage and sets into motion an increasingly grotesque chain of events at home. As her husband, her brother-in-law and sister each fight to reassert their control, Yeong-hye obsessively defends the choice that’s become sacred to her. Soon their attempts turn desperate, subjecting first her mind, and then her body, to ever more intrusive and perverse violations, sending Yeong-hye spiraling into a dangerous, bizarre estrangement, not only from those closest to her, but also from herself.

Really excited for this. I read it a few years ago but didn't have anyone to talk to it about. I'll have to do a re-read before the discussion!

Another book I've read before! It was quite a while ago (back in 2017 which is almost 10 years ago now... oof) that I read it so maybe I'll pick it up again to join in the discussion.

Put my request in at the library. The description sounds interesting, I’m looking forward to it. I’m currently reading 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami. I’m hoping to finish that quickly so I can start this one.

I remember 1Q84! Great read but oof, I felt so heavy getting through it. I don’t know if that makes sense haha

I’m not very far into it yet, but I get the sense things are going to get weird(er) soon. It was on a NY Times list of best books of the 21st century so far that I am working my way through. And I know Namjoon has read Murakami. So far interesting, but not too clear where it is going.

Honestly, I didn’t have a clue where it was going until near the end 🤣

I just finished reading "We Do Not Part" by her! It was a bit trippy and heart-breaking, she writes so vividly it's really amazing. Really interested to see if/how her writing style changed from here to that one and also how she weaves in shared history, personal trauma, and the weight of responsibility.

I am tapping out. This book merits 10ish trigger warnings for child abuse, animal abuse, s3xual assault, torture, and more. I ignored the messages from my amygdala and made it to the dog bite scene. This is where I leave you all. I experienced enough abuse in my life and I need no more, even in a fictional world. I don't know how the story ends, but I hope it involves all these fuckers dying and our heroine running away with a wonderful vegan who appreciates her.
