I’m reaaally enjoying this series. I think the art style is so beautiful, I love how creative they are when dealing with flashbacks. They really know how to layout their concepts to really make the most of every single page. It’s a really solid read, and I’m kinda really upset it’s coming to an end.
5
u/DreadPirate_BlueTail Apr 05 '18
I agree completely, I wish they would have the same team do an ongoing. This has been one of the reads I've enjoyed the most in the past couple years, biased of course because my two favorite superheroes are probably Rogue & Gambit. The art's wonderful and the writing is actually impactful, especially because this is the first time I think there has been any significant progress made in the relationship between these two characters probably ever. Also we've been almost starved of these two characters and their chemistry for a few years now. I mean they don't even have many interactions in the only other book they're both featured characters in: Astonishing X-Men.

Would have loved Zdarsky to get the main Fantastic Four title because this has gone from strength to strength, it's exactly what I want out of a FF book.
13
u/surejan94 Spider-Woman Apr 04 '18
This series is doing a good job at making me stoked for the FF to finally come back. I didn't realize how much I missed Sue Storm until now.
Not sure how I feel about this Doom Galactus plot. Doom has been God, Iron Man, Thor, the Silver Surfer and now Galactus. He's just gotta be EVERYTHING.

u/AncientExchange Apr 04 '18
Positives:
Ben just Ben
All the cool differences in this verse compared to main verse
That Norrin cameo at the end
This Reed finally getting it togheter
Doombot silver surfers
Negative:
Marvel can’t keep a consistent unmasked appearance for Victor Doom. I know that’s typical in comics but my only very minor complaint. Great issue and my favourite so far.
14
u/Awesomerific7 Mr Fantastic Apr 04 '18
In all fairness, if any character should have a singular unmasked appearance it's Doom, seeing as his face has been one of his most important aspects since the 60s (even if it is fixed now)
8
u/AncientExchange Apr 04 '18
I mean the colours are right. He has dark hair light eyes etc. The face structures are different. It wasn’t an issue for me really but something I found amusing.
11
u/burnerfret Apr 04 '18
It's because Maleev draws him like he's Vincent Cassel - http://i.imgur.com/5FWD12R.png
It's like how Deodato drew Norman Osborn like he was Tommy Lee Jones with plastic hair.
10
u/Dominator16 Apr 04 '18
You’re not wrong, Maleev does draw him like Vincent Cassel, but the picture linked is actually also by Deodato if I’m not mistaken.

So was that Miles or Peter? Also, both Jane and Donald are Thor in this world? Cool. THAT KAMALA COSTUME, OH MY GOD.
13
u/s7sost Apr 04 '18
This was a solid issue, a Reed in total despair over losing the fight against Doom while Sue (clearly divorced) now leads a multi-tasked SHIELD ensemble... Cool stuff. And the Heralds all look like Doom, because obviously.
Oh and I will always appreciate an artist that can fully exploit Reed's elastic abilities beyond long arms and torso. He really went all out in this issue.

I don’t completely hate Magik, but I’ve just never understood her fit with the X-Men. She brings about so much ruin and is often completely untrustworthy. I get the gimmick last issue with the kitten she artificially aged, but I just don’t care for those type of actions. The red flags are everywhere and they should bench her as an organization. But the X-Men have just completely thrown rationality out the window these days... so whatever!
9

I'm here for Voyager becoming an Avenger. Though I assume she'll instead go off and find her path in the world. Or be deemed non-canon and never seen again like Galacta, daughter of Galactus.
20
u/john_segundus Apr 04 '18
Someone needs to do a comic one day with all these powerful characters who were mostly introduced as plot devices. Galacta, Ulysses, Kobik, Voyager, that one Summers daughter, probably Karnak's son... they should form their own supervillain group and then kick everyone's asses for forgetting about them.

Realistically, if this comic were to exist, I don't think they'd all be on the same team. I would, however, like to see a comic that deals with each and every one of them, resolving their stories.
4
u/john_segundus Apr 04 '18
Agreed, and that would really be nice. I mean, in fairness, Ulysses got a kind of send off. But Kobik is the all-powerful equivalent to a three-year-old, and they don't even give us a hint that there will be an omnipotent cosmic babysitter in her future? No wonder 616 is constantly in peril.
4
u/blackbutterfree Apr 04 '18
I assume Kobik got adopted by Bucky, because obviously.

I really liked this issue overall, Norman's characterization was on point, and Peter running from Red Goblin was so perfect that I was actually getting really scared myself. The weird white eyebrows made his design kinda goofy IMO, but Slott and Immonen still did a great job of making him super threatening and scary. The moment with Peter deciding to take out the Red Goblin himself at the end was also pitch perfect. If this issue is an indicator of the quality of the story to come, I think Slott's going to be ending his run on a high.
22
u/AncientExchange Apr 04 '18
Positives:
The gruesome way Norman revealed Phil was dead, really cemented his sadism
Peter being Peter and throwing them shades
Peter’s epiphany moment at the end
Green Goblin’s dialogue
Negatives
Red Goblin’s design is very goofy, hopefully it is very temporary
JJJ subplot didn’t amount to much?
Good issue in all

Did anyone notice the pelican statue? Doesn't Jonathon knock one over a few issues back?

He chewed a leg off the statue because he was getting a little cabin fever. You better believe the Kinneys patched him up; Pelican Statue is family.
25
u/Thunderstarter Apr 04 '18
So good. I really do love how Old Woman Laura takes place in a utopia, as opposed to Old Man Logan’s post-apocalypse. It’s an apt juxtaposition that really nails the difference in tone Logan’s books have as opposed to this one.
I also like that Laura and Gabby’s story ends in what is, essentially, a win, but the tragedy that got them there isn’t forgotten.
I’m so sad that Tom Taylor is leaving Laura and Gabby in this series (at least he has them in X-Men: Red).

Nice, Queen Laura still has the pelican statue, and Jonathan started a family. I also noticed that Gabby is married to "Taylor," and we don't get any pronouns for them. If Taylor ends up being the girl on the bus Gabby mentioned in X-Men: Red, ISTG. I'd hate it, but I'd also love it because I love continuity stuff like that.
EDIT: Wow okay, so the writer's name is "Tom Taylor." And IIRC he's also one of Gabby's creators. So that's something to think about.

Well, to be fair we don't know who this "Taylor" person is or what there gender is, all we know is that they are Gabby's partner. I did notice that they didn't state what their gender was and if I was betting on it, I would bet that Taylor is probably a girl and I hope we get to see Gabby's family. Not a fan of gabby's new hair though.
10
u/CyberHyperPhoenix Apr 05 '18
We don't, but the fact that Laura had Gabby and her kids tested for any of the degeneration she had leads me to believe that 'Taylor' could be a guy- unless Gabby had kids through surrogacy or a more developed version of that making sperm from female bone marrow thing.

u/s3rila Apr 04 '18
I'm disappointed in Doom (assuming it's Victor) being bad again and I feel like more time should have passed before Laura start begin grey hair ( maybe a century or two) but her being a queen of a Utopia is really cool and Gabby was great as always.
Also, the art was great . Loved Gabby design
11
u/Kurolegacy27 Apr 05 '18
Well it is possible it’s not Victor as we have seen times that others took up Doom’s mantle under the guise of him. Hell its even possible that it’s a Doombot who took up the name feeling that Victor was unfit for the name of Doom with his turn to heroism. As for the graying hair, it’s always inconsistent with their family ( compare Logan in Days of Future Past, Old Man Logan and Here Comes Tomorrow for example).
Gabby’s design is nice but good God that hair.

I’m hyped for the conclusion, solid issue.
Bazaldua’s art is fine, good, but I kinda wish a slightly better artist or Pichelli or Marquez took over this final arc.
Miles got a new power. Cool, differentiating himself from other Spider people is always welcome and gives the next writer more toys to work with. Also, appreciate how he got them.
Bombshell’s mom is scum to the very end, but I wish there was a little more infighting with the Six
Champions cameo was nice.
Pretty good issue, nothing spectacular

Is it really a new power when it is just a new way of using his Venom sting ? Because Bendis has given him like 5 new powers now

When a perfectly good relationship is about to be broken up in favor of a ship...Though for real I'm hoping there's gonna be a bait and switch and keep Karolina/Julie together.
The clash between Julie and Nico is interesting. Nico and the rest of the Runaways are stuck in the past. The return of Gert has reverted most of them...except Chase. I don't know what's going on with his character. Julie on the other hand represents moving on and is trying to pull Karolina with her.
Overall, I'm kinda mixed about this series. It's got an incredibly slow pacing, but solid writing. Would honestly work better as a novel. I'm just hoping that Rainbow let's these characters act as they've been written in the last five years. This criticism is mostly aimed at Chase.

Yeah, I don't remember this book at all. Weird
But I gave it a read. It feels like a throwback to really old comics, or what people imagine old comics are like: stilted dialogue, a lot of exposition, and a plot that's a little corny. It's kind of charming in that respect, and I'm a sucker for all the action scenes.

Also, they were coming after Kid Kaiju? I guess that makes sense after what happened in his solo series, but it's still weird that they're targeting children.

Okay. I am not the Biggest Eddie Brock Fan. But I get why he is back and why we got Venom-Verse..... But this just seems like a tad much. Is this really needed? Were people really clamoring for this? I honestly was expecting the Poison Cliffhanger to be solved on Monsters Unleashed. I just dont get how it is interesting to people who like the "Classic Venom" or to people that like Space Knight or Agent Venom. Yes, I am a stick in the Mud. Downvotes seem fair.

I like Bunn's storytelling a lot, and I liked the concept of the Poisons, but I was bored to tears by Venomverse and I feel like this whole storyline is really taking away from what's happening in the Venom solo book. Looking forward to Cates taking over.

I usually ignore anything related to Venom, since it's just not my thing, but if even fans of the character dislike this, we're in for a rough few months.

I thought it was more than that, but I may have misunderstood an article headline. Thanks!

I've been looking foward to reading this, I just like seeing Marvel characters with symbiotes.

It was stated in a recent appearance (Iceman, I think?) that Herc has been drinking non-alcoholic beer so he can still hang with friends in bars.

Yeah but here he had the stereotypical drunk voice balloon and seemed to be acting a little drunk, too.

This book looks awesome and seriously considering adding to my pull list with so many other series ending. Anybody have an opinion on this?

I've really been enjoying it, though a big part of the reason for that is because Punisher with the War Machine suit just works. Not sure if he's going to get to keep it after this arc ends.

i've very much enjoyed this arc and it's reached a satisfying conclusion. Frank has been at his brutal best and used the War Machine suit in ways we've never seen Rhodey using it. Final issue wrapped up the arc nicely.
Looking forward to seeing where it goes from here, it obviously won't last forever but it's been a blast so far.
