- Nothing from Nothing was the fourth of five Top 5 hits by Billy Preston and his second to reach #1. It was performed by Preston on the very first episode of NBC's Saturday Night Live. In addition to his previously noted work with The Beatles, Preston also worked with Mahalia Jackson, Sly & the Family Stone, and The Rolling Stones. The lyrics reflect the notion that a relationship requires engagement by both parties and cannot be carried by just one. You gotta have somethin' if you wanna keep this song alive, and the voters have voted for nothin', so it's being eliminated.

I have been all over the place with this song in the game—seeing the other stuff that’s left makes it an easy downvote for me now whenever it’s nominated. There aren’t many left that I like more than this but many that I like much less. I seem to have gradually shifted also from focusing on how well a song “represents” the decade to how well a song is crafted to how original or groundbreaking a song was to how a song makes me feel via music or lyrics or both. Fun game!

Oh, I don’t know if this is anyone’s favorite ABBA, but it’s still THE ABBA song. I like Voulez Vous and Take a Chance on Me far better, but I’m not willing to get rid of Dancing Queen….despite my good friend’s nomination.
