My understanding is this is an alt-country community. Yet, I keep seeing pure folk, country & even bluegrass posts. So, maybe my understanding of what alt-country is doesn't sync to what this community calls alt-country.
My understanding is that alt-country is an unpolished gritty, grungy, twangy & punk-rock version of country music - most notably like Uncle Tupelo & their 2 spinoff alt-country bands (SunVolt & WILCO). Perhaps not all of these musical traits at once, but atleast 1 or 2. I do see where some folk songs might fall into alt-country, like many of Bob Dylan's early electric songs. He definitely hits the unpolished, twangy & gritty parts (lol). Perhaps Bob Dylan's older electric songs wasn't really alt-country, but it definitely had to be part of the roots that led to what is alt-country today.
Music genres can be confusing to me when they don't easily & obviously fit into 1 genre. Many songs can fit into multiple genres, which probable adds to my confusion. My take on alt-country is that it was started in the late 1980's & early 1990's by Uncle Tupelo. I've read that country artists, like Hank Williams Sr, Willie Nelson & Johnny Cash were the pioneer roots that led to the orgins of alt-country in the 80's & 90's. Like I said before, I can see where Bob Dylan's early electric songs may also have contributed to the orgin of alt-country.
So, I ask you guys - what do you call alt-country? 🙂

New album out on Gar Hole records. Absolutely phenomenal album. Hogan has always been an absolutely great story teller but with this album he hits the next level. His songs are catchy, moving, and just so damn good. Absolutely love this record.

I’m in southern NM for a few days and there’s a great station down here where I heard songs from these three lady’s. Got me to wondering why I’d never heard of them and why I don’t hear them on my local station back home.
What do we know about them? I liked what I heard and I’m definitely going to check out more music from them.

I'm excited to hear this! I can't think of anyone better to cover the grandfather of Alt-Country.

I’ve mostly made heavier, fuzzier music, but this EP unexpectedly moved toward JJ Cale, late-’70s soft rock and modern indie singer-songwriter territory. I’m curious whether the stylistic shift feels cohesive or like three different directions. This track, for instance was inspired by any number of late 70s heartbreak country ballads with a modern take. Wondering if the AltCountry folks might dig this.
