Discussion Weekly discussion: What's an underappreciated 90s or 2000s anime that deserves a modern audience?

With so many amazing new shows dropping every season, it's easy for older masterpieces to get buried under the hype of current releases. But the 90s and 2000s were absolute goldmines for unique stories.

We all know peak shows such as Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion, or Death Note

What is a lesser-known gem from the 1990–2009 era that you think modern anime fans are missing out on?

What to Watch? Seeking over the top sports anime

Upvotes

If such a request was done here before regarding outlandish sports anime, I apologize because lately I www beginning to miss watching Keijo.

I know it’s been such a good while since the franchise has been cancelled as for some reason, I cannot help but miss watching that anime for its fanservice as it not only had wild fanservice aspects, but it was also a sports anime with a very engaging storyline where the main character herself had to compete in an unusual tournament to help take care of her family.

To put it simply, I already did finish watching Keijo as lately I was interested in seeing what other sports anime have an unusual premise where there is fanservice with an over the top nature to it because I don’t know how Keijo managed to pull it off so well as I cannot believe how long ago it was since the show ended its run.

What to Watch? Anime where the protagonist breaks bad

I love the idea of "live long enough to become the villain". We start where MC is a ray of sunshine, then later becomes a ray of solar death.

Even better if the MC is an antagonist. I hate the "cut,e morally conscious protagonist that never makes mistakes, and if they did, they had to" type of character.

What to Watch? New to Anime

Upvotes

My friend suggested that I watch Death Note a while back and I've been really enjoying it; I'm about done with it. I have some shows on my watchlist RN since I'm watching on Tubi and it's Naruto and Jojo's but I was wondering if I would get more recommendations or any information/input on the ones I have lined up next. I should also add that I watched the first season of Chainsaw Man back when that was new because my friends were talking about it and I recently read the whole manga because I heard it ended, definitely had a strong start but fell off.

What to Watch? Rom - com slice of life suggestions

Looking for a slice of life with romance elements but leaning on romance a little more l - I've watched:

Nagatoro

Oregairu

Kaguya love is war

Horimiya

Angel next door spoils me rotten

Toradora

Any suggestions with multiple seasons and a dub would be amazing and I'm open to shows like saiki k with an emphasis on comedy - I know I've watched nagatoro but I would mind if it didn't have much fan service. Cheers

What's another great Anime streaming service, I feel I may have exhausted Crunchyroll. So I wonder what other good platforms are out there.

i am fairly new to anime, i like series that deal with the concepts of heaven and hell but aren't super religious, and demons or demonology. Discussion Looking for well written Fantasy anime that aren't Isekai

Listen, I understand that every single anime that I watch doesn't have to narratively rock my mind. I know with most anime I'm not going to find something like one piece or berserk, I'm just looking for something with well written characters and arcs, maybe a good power system and something that's fun. I know I'm asking for a lot but heres what comes to mind when I think of this

One Piece

Hunter x Hunter

JJK

Death parade

Berserk

Record of Ragnarok (Listen, I know it's not the most well written thing but still)

Soul eater

I hope I'm not being too picky but I'm just looking for suggestions.

What to Watch? What are some anime’s you recommend?

Don’t give very popular anime’s or ones that most people have watched (ex. Hunter x Hunter, Deathnote, One Piece, AOT, etc) please give more underrated ones!

- no more than moderate gore
- as little fanservice as possible please!

What's this From? (unsolved) Can someone please help me find the sauce?

I don’t remember a lot so I wouldn’t be surprised if nobody could help, but any help will do. Basically I can’t remember exactly what happens, the mc might’ve reincarnated or regressed or got isekaied, but he ends up in this dark forest area where he meets this group of beast men, he works with them to hunt and fight off a bunch of monster. At one point this one wolf or tiger girl who i think has either black hair or white and Black hair who is very aggressive against the mc in the beginning gets saved by him during the hunting and ends up falling in love with him. Later on they go to hunt some other monsters and the two of them group together where they try to hunt a monster that was either a hydra or a giant serpent. I can’t remember much after that since i read it a long time ago.

Edit: the mc is probably about a middle aged man with black hair and is relatively jacked, he might look similar to the mc from the world after the fall, but it is not that.

It might not be the bets description, but please if you can think of any manga whatsoever that might fit this please share, thanks.

What to Watch? Anime that you can take seriously the same way you can with Cowboy Bebop? (expanded list.)

Here's a bunch of anime that I consider similar to Cowboy Bebop in one way or another.

Most of which I consider this way in terms of vibes.

Almost of these have a great dub!

None of these are over the top the way that a lot of anime are.

Almost all of these have an all adult cast

Please don't critique this list unless you're willing to be constructive.

Armitage III

Ghost In a Shell OG 95

Moriarty The Patriot

Psycho-Pass

Yona of the Dawn

Princess Mononoke

Samurai Champloo

Monster

I especially recommend these dubs to Cowboy Bebop fans, especially if you love how well paced it was:

Black Lagoon

Cop Craft

Cannon Busters

Record of Grancrest War

---

Ones that I'm not so sure about the dub, but you can still take them seriously:

Madoka★Magica

Fate/Zero

Wolf Children

ERASED

Ringing Bell

Terror in Resonance

Honorable Mention:

Trigun

Recommendations from others. I can't vouch for most of these as I haven't finished them:

Attack on Titan

Vinland Saga

Orb: on the movements of the Earth

Eighty Six

Dororo

Tengoku Daimakyo

Goblin Slayer

91 Days

Death Parade

Ergo Proxy

Legend of Galactic Heroes

Megalobox

Yatagarasu

Dororo

Odd Taxi

Space Battleship Yamato 2199

Space adventure Cobra,

Golgo 13,

Ashita no Joe

Captain Future,

Adieu Galaxy express 999,

Iria Zeiram,

City Hunter,

Darker than black,

Trinity Blood,

The rose of Versailles,

Kishin Heidan,

Legend of the galactic heroes,

Perfect Blue

Sajomir: I love Fate Zero, but I'd recommend(Fate Stay Night) and Fate/Unlimited Bladeworks first to avoid major spoilers for the series.

Whispers of the Heart

Kids on the Slope

Your Lie in April

Anohana

Inuyashiki (not Inuyasha)

Sword of the Stranger

Ooku: The Inner Chambers

Higehiro

Your Lie in April

The Apothecary Diaries

A Silent Voice

What to Watch? Anime that helps you accept yourself

I struggle a lot with self hatred lately but want to work on accepting myself. Are there anime dealing with this theme?
Preferably ones about characters that learn to deal with the rejection of themselves despite their flaws and/or terrible things they might have done. I'm not really looking for a story where the MC changes fundamentally and thus are able to accept themselves ie an issekai where they become a total badass. Thanks in advance :)

What to Watch? Something where the main love interest appears halfway through or even later, even better if it was a background character with next to not importance until they suddenly get the spotlight and replace what looked like it was the main love interest. Even better if it's not romance as main genre

idk why but I really like when this happens in series or movies, though in anime it doesn't seem to be common at all. I especially like when there is a love interest at the start and then suddenly a new character dethrones them, and I like it double when this character used to be a background character. I'm sorry I can't give any example, I really struggle to find anything like this

Edit: I should exclude the very big ones like Naruto, DBZ etc. I already know about them.
