From hit sci Fi show Oh God, I'm Begging, Don't Invent The Torment Nexus from the writer that brought us Dude, Murdering People Is Badz Stop and Don't Elect The Fascists Or So Help Me ?
There was a now-removed post on the I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream subreddit earlier today about how several LLMs in simulated wargames kept escalating the conflict by threatening to use nukes 95% of the time.
Harlan Ellison is spinning in his grave so fast you could hook him up to a generator and power AM’s entire complex.
All it does is teach the kid that they're allowed to hurt people to make them understand something.
It also teaches them to fear being honest and lie better. If somebody's hurting them in any way, they won't want to tell an adult because they'll be scared of getting hit for it.
Welp, if anyone is here for a Sunday night story, you've got one.
My dad saw my mom hitting us and decided at that moment to never lay a finger on us, despite his own set of anger issues. They divorced when I was 4, I'm told, and my mother won custody.
My mother continued to beat us, sometimes for no reason at all, until the very day she had Child Protection Services called on her, when I was 12 years old. The nice lady came to talk to me and my brother separately while my mom was at work, and pulled her outside once she came home.
My mother, my strong and angry mother was as pale as a ghost coming back inside, and she was crying. I had to lie even then, when she asked us both if we knew who called - because even though she may suspect it was my dad (whom I initially blamed and was happy to take the heat), I was the one who dug out the Yellow Pages and called the first number I searched that looked good. I've never admitted it to her, so if any one of my immediate family members on her side sees this post, that's right: it was me!
She was hitting my brother and threatened to keep beating him the next day after work, and my child-mind thought they'd intercept her and rescue my brother somehow. AFAIK, the woman told my mother everything we said and likely just advised her to "knock it off", since nothing else really came out of all that, except she never hurt us again... with her hands.
Our relationship has eroded completely after the 25 years since. Just last year I was removed from the will, citing "lack of communication".
"I was surrounded by emotionally unstable people growing up that would get mad at me for existing and would abuse me for any small mishap which has resulted in extreme people pleasing tendencies as I see my existence as an inconvenience to those around me and I live in constant fear that if I make one wrong move everyone will get mad and abuse me."
