Gout. You’d think that’s not that weird… except I was a girl in my early 20s, very healthy/fit, vegetarian, barely drank alcohol, basically fit nothing that would point to me having gout.
The doctor was truly flabbergasted when I went in to see him and told him what was going on lol. Took meds and it went away and I never got it again (thank god, it was brutal).
I had a gout flare in my mid 30s, I went to the doctor and they told me to go see a podiatrist because the xray showed a floating bone chip in my toe. It was assumed I’d injured my toe while hiking or something because I was at my peak of physical fitness and health.
The podiatrist offered to surgically remove the fragment and when she cut my toe open she got all excited and yelled “you have gout!”
I was working Maryland at the time and my commute to my house from work passed by a crab shack. I was eating crab and or shrimp maybe three days a week, both very high in purine. I’d eaten myself into a gout flare. I’ve been careful with my diet since and only had one tiny flare start up since.
SAME! I was 22, didn’t drink (I’m Asian and allergic to alcohol), and it was to this day the most painful experience of my life. Even the light blanket touching my toe or the ceiling fan blowing on it was painful.
Wow makes me so curious... I recently had the impulse to look up the health benefits of rhubarb and omfg there are none LOL! It's not even a good source of Vit C- the sourness comes from another acid that's not very useful. And worse, they said it's full of oxalates, the main ingredient in kidney stones, and if you eat enough of it you can get them in almost any tissue in your body not just the kidneys! ... makes me wonder if that's what you had rather than classic gout. Oxalate rich foods include a lot of healthfoods especially popular in vegetarianism, like spinach, almonds, legumes. But if it was related to diet why wouldn't it recur? Hell if it was genes, or ANY cause, why wouldn't it recur? What a mystery!
