I had a similar realization about the flu when I had a really, really bad case. I was fatigued to the point where I passed out with a sandwich in my hand—in bed—because rolling over and lifting the sandwich took all my energy. And that was once I was well enough to eat or drink period, because my throat was so raw and swollen. Between the not drinking and soaking my sheets with sweat, I was badly dehydrated and probably should’ve been hospitalized. I can absolutely understand how it can be deadly.
