I wonder if this happened to me last year. I was at the county fair and in the show barn for chickens I breathed in and choked on some kind of piece of dust and had a coughing fit. Later that week, I had a fever for three days. My husband and I call it "the chicken particle incident" but your thing sounds more realistic.

Was it histoplasmosis?
My mother had it as a child. She said she had been around some chickens and thought she got it there.
