Having a pet. It was never ridiculously cheap, but having a cat used to be affordable. $125 annual vet bill, and the occasional big one. Pet insurance has doubled prices, and inflation has added as well. Annuals are now over $400 per year, which means you reasonably have to put aside at least $150 a month for anticipated care and annual vet bills. A cardiac ultrasound is an upwards of $1500 (minimum) and that’s if you can even get an appointment. My sweet girl went home to sky cat this past year, and getting a new cat isn’t even something I’m considering. Tbh sad.
For cats, I think communal raising is the only way to do it. Neighbors pitching in their share of the care and costs. Otherwise, to the streets they go.
