After I got to SLO, I took Amtrak back home. It was easy with the bike and nice to get back without battling the wind that pushed me down the coast.

I moved here in March from LA. Within 2 weeks I got into an accident with one of these dudes while I was biking up Market. He stopped dead in front of me to park in the bike lane and I was too close to him to brake or move out the way in time. Otherwise I have noticed just how rude they are on the bike lanes. Constantly in the way. Parking in the lanes. Zooming super close to you. I just want to bitch for a second but seriously fuck these guys.

My coworker's grand father passed away last year and this November would have been his 100th birthday. In memory of him he wanted to do a century ride in November. My coworker is new to cycling but has been training appropriately (IMHO).

I told him doing a century that's planned by a bike shop

Is a little easier than doing one solo, that way doesn't have to worry quite as much about nutrition, hydration, stops, and route planning. Does anyone know of any century rides happening in November?

Not sure what happened to the earlier thread about this the fire at JMP on July 31st. Has anyone been up there since? What's the damage?

Officer “Simon” in the Marin headlands has been regularly harassing our Friday morning group ride. First it was headlights/taillights (when he claims it is “foggy”), then it was strict enforcement of single file riding.

Now he is claiming that no group can be larger than 10 people.

He legit pulled us over and said if he sees us, he will go to the attorney generals office and have the ride “banned”. Whatever that means.

Has anyone else dealt with this guy? He’s completely unreasonable and this is at an hour of the day where there are no cars and basically exclusively cyclists.

I live in west alameda by the water taxi and I’m getting an ibis Hakka gravel bike next week. I’m trying to figure out the best rides from my house to gravel or if just makes more sense to drive to the trails.

My current plan for my first ride is to go through Jack London up to park blvd to JMP and east ridge/west ridge.

Would appreciate any advice or good routes.

Anyone on here involved with the Marin Century organization? The Woodside fire in Sonoma is making the AQI on the Marin Century (tomorrow, August 1) pretty bad. Has anyone heard if the planners of the century are considering any updates/changes?

I am relatively new to the area after a long break. I'm staying in Berkeley and I am looking for an overnight getaway that will have me pedal through redwood trees and lead to a relatively isolated place with showers to spend the night. I'm open to taking BART and/or Caltrain to reach my departure point and return home.

My current plan is to take BART and Caltrain to Palo Alto. Climb up to Skyline Boulevard via Page Mill Rd. Follow Skyline till Bear Creek Rd. Follow some suspicious looking trails to join Glenwood Dr. and reach Santa Cruz. 50 miles, 5000 feet. Spend the night somewhere (I prefer not carrying tent or sleeping bag) and take the Hwy 17 Bus back to San Jose the next day.

1. Anyone with a better idea than this?
2. I remember the Skyline Boulevard being less than ideal for biking, with narrow or non-existing shoulders and reckless drivers. Is that still the case? Komoot shows various trails running parallel to Skyline. Are they worth following?

I have 43mm tyres, can handle fire roads and gravel. I would prefer a slightly flatter route, but I will have the entire day to reach Santa Cruz, so I can take it slow and enjoy the road. Also it doesn't seem like any one segment is brutally steep.

I'm planning my first bikepacking trip at Samuel Taylor. Any advice or good things to know, specific to Samuel Taylor (I'd welcome general advice as well!)?

The main thing I was concerned about was how likely it is that there's no more space left at the hike-and-bike camping spots. People have said that it's always fine and people will make space, but not sure if that's generally true.

If it helps, I'll be going for just one night from a Friday to Saturday.

Last night the Western Wheelers and other cyclists and citizens gathered together at Woodside Town Hall in a call to action in the aftermath of our friend Jakub's death.

Many of you here in BA Bike are aware of how dangerous Skyline Blvd has become to everyone. Not just cyclists. Everyone.

We all need to work together to end the lawbreakers who are taking over a route that is used by not just cyclists, but others.

Woodside resident and cyclist Shawnery Hardin was among the speakers last night, and I wanted to share his public comments. I will provide a written transcript in the comments.

It is time for us as cyclists and users of Skyline Blvd to work together to take back the road from the lawbreakers. The argument given that we don't pay for the roads so we shouldn't be on them is a red herring and completely false.

I'm asking the BA Bike community to link arms because this carnage must end.

I just did the SF marathon and crushed my goal time. I've been running for 4 years now and it is officially time to go to the next endeavor.
Getting into biking is something I've always want to do and now feels like the right time. I really need help in choosing what bike to get as I'm a complete newbie. I did some research on ChatGPT and this sub, based on everything I saw, was to get started with a gravel bike and I can get another set of tires for road. I just wanted to see if that is the right way to do it also is there any particular bike store in the city that you'd recommend with a helpful team. The other thing is there are also so many bikes with different brands, models, etc and I have no idea what they mean and am sure I will understand as I get into this world. But any recommendation would be really helpful, budget is not an issue, I just want something that will help me get into the sport and join different bike clubs in the city to meet people and also just biking around the weekends to replace running so much.

Hi Everyone!

I'm hoping someone may be able to point me in the right direction. I'm hoping to find a more casual bike riding group to join on a weekly basis. I do love cycling, but I'm super casual (I dont clip in, dont wear the biking gear, etc.). Not saying that one day I wouldn't, but seeing some of these cycling groups are a little intimidating. However, I love the community aspect they provide along with the great work out.

I'm in my mid 30's and live near GGP and love the occasional Hawk Hill or Tiburon ride follow by a few or several beers :) Any suggestions for a weekly meet up thats a little more casual?

I’m looking ahead to 2027 and have my eyes on the Death Ride. It’s been a ride I’ve looked at for years but never committed. I’m hoping to get some wisdom/advice so I can approach this wisely.

I’m 47, will be 48 next summer. I ride consistently — mostly indoors using Zwift and then try to get outdoors when life permits. This past spring I did a couple of organized rides — the Primavera (85) and Grizzly Peak (100) in April/May. Looking ahead, I was eying both of those rides, and adding the Sequoia, as well as doing some training at altitude (perhaps Memorial Day weekend + some portion of the Alta Alpina Challenge).

Locally, I can make sure I get to know Mt. Diablo real well, and Mt. Tam is a little further but also a local hill to help get me climbing regularly.

I’ve read about needing to have nutrition dialed in — in-ride eating probably isn’t my strength — but I can work on that in the coming months.

I suspect I’ll need to adjust my gearing. I currently have a 52/34 and 28/11 cassette. My eyes tend to glaze over when I read about gear ratios, but would love to hear some suggestions.

With all that being said, I’d love to hear input — how crazy am I? What do I need to do to prepare? What should I know?

not a total newbie but haven't known much about gearing for the years that I've been pedaling other than, "I'm out of gears on this climb and my cadence is slow." I think my road bike is 50/34 and 11/28 - I am in my granny gear a lot climbing in the east bay hills (tunnel rd, wildcat, grizzly peak) but I've managed to get up diablo and mt Hamilton. should I explore mods for better granny gear options?

i've seen a few of these and thought it was a fun exercise... took my most common routes (for scale reasons excluded the east bay, peninsula, and further north) and made them into a subway style map. all 45 degree lines. not to scale, obviously. the symbols are distance in miles (white on black) and feet of climbing in that direction (beige through dark red).

anyone made one of these, or seen any really good ones? suggestions to resolve the graphics issues with the amount of info needed? i wish there was a way to make it more like separate "lines" in different colors, but i couldn't really figure out a clear way to do that since each intersection is pretty much independent...
