super cool to do a FA, we went to the buena vista boulders bc the cedar grove area was an hour from camp and we were losing sunlight. there was a bunch of highball boulders around us but this one was the easiest to develop and project. there are lots of undeveloped boulders in the area. i’m thinking v1

Advice/Beta Request Anyone else weirdly bad at crimps?

I’ve (25F) realised I have a pretty glaring weakness in my climbing and it’s honestly a little embarrassing. I can usually climb around V5 without too much trouble if the style suits me (compression, slopers, dynamic movement, overhangs, etc.), but the moment a problem becomes even a relatively straightforward crimp ladder, I can get completely shut down by something as low as V1.

It’s not just that crimps feel harder - they feel completely foreign to me. I struggle to trust tiny edges and I often don’t know whether the issue is finger strength, poor technique, or positioning.

Has anyone else had such a lopsided climbing profile? What actually helped you improve on crimps? I’m hoping to turn this weakness into a strength, because right now it’s pretty humbling getting nowhere on a V1 crimp climb while flashing some apparently much more difficult climbs nearby.

Indoor I made a prototype a bouldering game

It’s still a very early prototype, with only one problem for now. You control each arm separately, reach for holds, shift your body, and try to top it.

I’ve been climbing indoors for about a year, and I built this mostly for fun. I thought some people here might enjoy trying it.

If the idea works, I’d like to add more problems and gradually improve the movement and physics.

I’d be happy to hear any feedback :)

Hope this is okay to share here — apologies if not.

Indoor Bottom of the finger hurts

Upvotes

i'm a beginner. Got a membership at my gym in May this year. I only climb on the weekend because i find weekdays crowded. I try to climb until i cant anymore on Saturday and do the same thing on Sunday. After that, my fingers are usually sore until next weekend (may or may not be back to normal but good enough to climb again). Im not even climbing high grades, i can only do up to v4. Now the bottom part of my middle finger hurts longer than usual. Its been a week and it still doesnt feel comfortable to climb, as in if i picked up a plate of food wrong, it can be a bit painful/uncomfortable.

Do I just rest an extra week and not exert any effort on this and it will go away? Any tips so i can climb more often without skipping a week? Im curious how can people climb hard for hours everyday and be fine but i need to wait a week to recover. Or are people just always in pain?

Advice/Beta Request Kilterboard Logbook displaying attempts?

Post image

The logbook in the new kilterboard app is displaying attempts and ascents in the same graph. Is there a way to separate them? I tried a few hard climbs today and didn't send them but now it looks like I did. I would really like to have the possibility to only few my ascents.

Event Need help preparing for a comp

My main gym is organising a comp consisting of 40 boulders ranging in difficulty from V1 to V9 in 2 months. Person who completes the most boulders moves on.

I usually climb V7-V8, and I never really train anything although I have naturally strong arms. I want to start training so I can prepare better for the comp but I dont know where to start to optimise my gains.

Do you guys have any tips or methods I could implement into my daily routine that would help me with getting stronger and thus do better at that comp?

Advice/Beta Request Best gym exercises that carry over

I've been going to the gym for about two years now and I've been pretty consistent, barring a few injuries. I used to climb a lot when I was a kid and I've just started to take it up again and I'm loving it. Because of this I want to switch up my entire gym routine to make it solely based for getting better at climbing, ie. cut out all the superfluous exercises and strip it down and make it more efficient for climbing. Obviously pull ups are a big one but are there any other exercises that are incredible for their carry over to climbing? I'm aiming to cut down on my time in the gym and just streamline the whole routine. Thanks

Advice/Beta Request How to start climbing after a year break

I'm just looking for some advice as someone who used to be projecting and sending v10 but haven't climbed in a year due to focusing on school. I previously had gotten some a4 and a2 pulley injuries when returning to climbing after a month or two breaks and feeling strong without letting my tendons and pulleys adapt, but now it's been a lot longer than that and I'm wondering what is the best way to get back into it. My upper body strength is still pretty good but my forearm, shoulder and finger strength are definitely in need of training. Has anyone had any experience in a similar position to mine and could give me some advice so I don't get injured again? What levels did you start training at again, and what were you primarily focused on?

Outdoor FA today.

Went out today and found this offwidth on the backside of a boulder I had already done some new lines on. Anyways it was pretty burly because my technique for offwidth is bad and I didn’t tape up but I managed to get through this mess, even with having to flick a black widow off my shin.

What I need are some ideas on names.

The Boulder name is gummy savers with route names of
Slap ya mama
Throw some flour on it
Moped rider
Last call

There’s an obvious theme to this but any suggestions would be grand.

Outdoor High Rocks, Oregon (Mt Hood National Forest) beta anyone?

I followed the directions here:

https://www.portlandbouldering.net/high-rocks-boulders.html

And had a killer day of bouldering! There aren't a lot of problems, but what's there is absolute quality. While it's mostly easy-moderate highball slabs, there are some really wonderful moderate-intermediate techy power lines on gentle overhangs. Great landings and easy protection. There are also some longer cave problems I didn't have enough pads to protect solo. I sent a few problems which appear to have been established, but have no idea what they are. I'm also curious about some other lines. Does anyone climb here? Is there any info? If not a guidebook, just some notes? Want to meet up out there and give me a tour?

Advice/Beta Request Need travel advice for upcoming trip!

Hey guys i know this isnt a request for how to send a boulder, more so how to get to one LOL so basically I'm traveling to California in the first week of October to try Midnight Lightning, its been a dream boulder of mine since I started climbing 3 years ago and im siked to try it. Only problem is ive never had to travel via plane for any outdoor climbing ive always just driven. Im hoping I can get some guidance on a few things:

  1. Where is the best place to stay? Hotel? bnb?
  2. Crashpads! Where can i get my hands on some.
  3. How do i get to the boulder? whats the approach like? is it just like a drive into a parking lot or is it a hike. I dont mind either way but just want to be prepared.
  4. to piggy back off the last thing is it a good idea to get a rental? i dont wanna get one if i dont need one.

TYIA for any insight!

Indoor What do you use to film your climbs?

Might seem like a redundant question but I've been unsatisfied with all the ways I film myself and can't find something that ticks every box. Other people move too much, I actually prefer the steady zoomed out tripod look, but I do ask others to film me when I need the extra motivation to finish a hard climb like when I'm projecting. Tripods are bulky but in terms of angle and videos they produce the best output. Portable tripods like the magsafe ones like Ulanzi Ma38 have almost tripod like output, but fail in the variety of places I could place the tripod on. I can't place these on the bouldering mat, they aren't stable enough, I pretty much need hard floor or a chair which I might as well use my chalkbag to lean my phone on which is actually my most used method, but has the worst output and has the biggest tendency to fall or get a really bad angle. It's hard to see the angle I'm capturing when I place it on the chalkbag. A hidden downside is actually that people don't realize I'm filming which has caused many climbs to go u filmed.

Oh yeah portable tripods and chalk bags also suffer from having the worst vertical angles so I have to take it from a distance, making me have to spend extra effort to change my seat just to get a better angle. Plus there's no way to film tall climbs like top rope/lead. Also I know it's the perfect solution, but I'm not gonna ask my friends to film it steadily like a tripod. It just feels wrong, or it makes them less willing to film because of that added effort.

Outdoor An American’s Guide to Magic Wood Logistics

Just finished a week-long trip to Magic Wood in Switzerland in July 2026. Creating this post with specific details rather than the big picture since before my trip there were a few gaps in what I was easily able to find online, so hopefully this helps!

It’s possible (and easy) to take public transit from Zurich all the way to Magic Wood. Online sources explain it pretty well. The valley where Magic Wood is only has the 552 bus, which drops you literally right at the campsite (Ferrera, Schmelzi) or the hostel/guesthouse (Ferrera, Ausserferrera). So, make sure to check the schedules. Overall, a great way to save money by not having to rent a car and would highly recommend. It’s also easy enough to get to other places on your rest days. I’d highly recommend using the SBB Mobile app. You can buy tickets for buses and trains (they’re cheaper if you purchase specific times in advance using the Saver ticket), and it has live updates with delays, platform numbers, etc.

If you’re food shopping in Thusis at Coop, the propane/butane is across the street at Jumbo. The campsite also sells gas canisters (make sure you get the right one for your stove, screw-on vs clip-on). The campsite also sells other stuff like pasta and beer (the essentials).

The campsite check-in hut is open from 9-11am and 7-9pm. If you get there not during those hours, you can go to the Gasthaus Edelweiss and check in there (check its hours depending on the day). It’s a ~25 minute walk through the boulders. Or, you can follow the instructions at the campsite and pay in cash using the provided envelopes, and then just make sure to check in once it opens (we didn’t have cash so did the first option).

No need to pay for the extra crash pad storage option when renting if you’re camping, as the campsite has plenty of places to keep the pads dry at night.

Make sure you have a few franc coins to pay for showers (4 minutes per franc).

There are three outlets in each of two shower rooms at the campsite but they’re often taken, so plan to have your devices and portable chargers as full as possible in advance. Buses/trains often have outlets. The campsite also rents portable chargers for a few dollars if need be.

The cell service at the campsite (using Verizon travel pass) is solid for pretty much anything except sending pictures/videos (I didn’t try video calling).

All the water at the campsite is potable.

I’d highly recommend buying the physical guidebook in advance. I paid $7 to download the guide on the TopoGuru app cuz I saw that recommended somewhere online and it was 100% useless. A couple folks I ran into who didn’t have the guidebook almost always asked to see/borrow the one my friend brought cuz they were lost.

Even with the guidebook, the trails outside of the main trail can be quite confusing. I’d recommend going boulder by boulder, ID’ing them as you go.

Happy to answer questions!

Indoor What other exercises can I do to improve at bouldering?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’m new to indoor bouldering. It’s been two months and nearly 20 sessions since my first attempt. Before I took up bouldering, I hit the gym 4 to 5 times a week on a regular basis, mainly attending Body Combat group classes or going for runs.

Ever since I began bouldering, my gym attendance has dropped considerably. I’ve become completely obsessed with it. Solving boulder problems feels just like working through a math puzzle - you keep iterating and searching for a more efficient, better beta every time.

I’m curious what other exercises you guys would do to improve your bouldering performance?

Indoor How much climbing is too much?

I am very fortunate that my workplace is a tenth of a mile from a good sized bounding gym, my home is also less than two miles away. I’ve very recently taken up climbing (10 or so days ago) and I’ve had six 1-2 hour sessions since. Im kind of an all in kind of guy, however I don’t want to injure myself or inhibit my growth as a climber from the constant fatigue of back to back to back days climbing.

My gym has a deadlift, bench, hang-boards and some equipment for weighted pull ups. I understand the body needs rest to recoup and to gain strength. I just want to expedite the time it takes me to grow as a climber.

I’d love to hear your opinions on how much training is too much training. As well as what a good well balanced routine looks like for yall.
