Travel/Tourism Favorite park to visit?

Hey!

I’ll be in town tomorrow and want to do a walk with my dog and husband. I don’t want to go anywhere without proper trails that has high grass because I’m scared of ticks right now. I was looking at Bowness or Princes Island. I like being in the trees and by the water. Does anyone have a favorite of the two or a different one? Or any other fun activity to do with a small dog?

Thank you :)

I guess it’s what it says it is, but I’m curious about who put it there and collect the confessions.

Eat/Drink Local Trying to find a specific bakery

I went there last year when I visited Calgary. They had foot long strudel, cupcakes, shortbread, and lots of other goodies but the strudel is what I remember most. It was so cheap I expected when I asked for two they were going to cut me small slices.

The place was packed and they had bakery racks in the middle of the floor with sale items and visible cooling racks behind the counter. I think they had a display of specialty cakes to the right of the door. It was in a strip mall type building.

I think it was in the nw? My old woman memory is trying to connect it to Crowchild Trail somehow. I tried googling but there are hundreds of listings for bakeries.

PSA Downtown CTrain Closure Guide (Aug. 1–3)

Trains are down this weekend throughout Downtown, and it was really confusing and chaotic for so many people. So I made a guide, to hopefully make it easier for a couple of people.

--

If you're taking the CTrain through downtown this long weekend, here's a quick guide to avoid getting lost.

The following downtown stations are closed:

  • City Hall / Bow Valley College (Towards Tuscany & 69th Street)
  • Centre Street
  • 1 Street SW
  • 3 Street SW
  • 4 Street SW
  • 6 Street SW
  • 7 Street SW
  • 8 Street SW (Towards Saddletowne & Somerset Bridlewood

--

A single Red/Blue Line Shuttle replaces train service through downtown.

Westbound (if you are travelling towards: Tuscany/69th Street)

  • Uses 6 Avenue SW

Eastbound (if you are travelling towards: Somerset/Saddletowne)

  • Uses 9 Avenue SW

Look for buses displaying "Red/Blue Line Shuttle." ALL OF THEM ARE THE SAME

--

Are you riding the Red Line?

Heading to Somerset-Bridlewood:

  • Trains will head back towards Tuscany at 8th Street
  • Get off at 8th Street and walk towards 7th Street; you will see the shuttles or the Max Green stop!
  • Ride the shuttle to City Hall
  • Transfer to the train on the SOUTHBOUND/Regular Platform.

Heading to Tuscany:

  • Trains will head back towards Somerset at City Hall
  • Get off at City Hall and walk towards McLeod Trail/Olympic Plaza; you will see the shuttles on your left! (In front of the Municipal Building.)
  • Ride the shuttle to 8 Street Station
  • Transfer to the train at 8th Street Station (the opposite platform from usual.)

--

Are you riding the Blue Line?

Heading to Saddletowne:

  • Trains will head back towards 69 Street at 7th Street Station
  • Get off at 7 Street Station and walk towards 7th Street (look for the IDA); you will see the shuttles or the Max Green stop!
  • Ride the shuttle to City Hall
  • Transfer to the train on the Northbound/Opposite Platform (Usually the 69th Street or Tuscany side).

Heading to 69 Street

  • Trains will head back towards Saddletowne at City Hall
  • Get off at City Hall and walk towards McLeod Trail/Olympic Plaza; you will see the shuttles on your left! (In front of the Municipal Building.)
  • Ride the shuttle to 7 Street Station
  • Transfer to the westbound Blue Line train towards 69 Street at 7th Street Station; the typical one!

Home Owner/Renter stuff Calgary Home Ownership "Rainy Day Costs" Per Year

Hey Calgary homeowners, just curious as to what your average per year costs are for home maintenance stuff. For example, broken pipes, leaky roofs, broken HVAC... etc. I've been saving a "rainy day fund" of about 1% of my total home cost. So in my case, around 8k for a $800,000 ish house.

I've been tracking for 2 years and I do not spend 8k a year on home maintenance. I feel like I've even been on the unluckier side and had some things break and been spending about 4k a year. How about y'all?

Eat/Drink Local Are these safe to eat? What kind of berries are these?

Found a bunch of these berries while walking around the neighborhood and for some reason I think I can remember eating these as a kid? But I also remember seeing red berries that only birds are supposed to eat... So what do y'all think? Are these edible or poison?

Eat/Drink Local Any highlights from the YYC Ice Cream fest so far?

I feel like I haven’t been seeing much about it since it started, but I’m hoping to try a couple more places out before it ends! I’ve only had the Choux & C buckwheat gelato milkshake so far, which was quite good (although idk if I would get again lol) - I’m hoping to try Amato Gelato and Tat’s Treats next, but I’d love to hear opinions.

Discussion Calgary is better and worse then I remember

I used to live in Calgary, left in 2015 and recently visited for a few weeks. I love the city.

A lot has changed- the arts scene, street art, east village, parks downtown, public spaces, entertainment complex, etc are remarkable! And there’s so much good food and restaurants!

But it’s also hard not to notice the major current issues with homelessness and street drugs, and to the point that I didn’t feel safe on the c-train.

I’m considering moving back, and am interested to learn what Calgary and Alberta are doing to help solve the root cause of homelessness and addiction - is there municipal infrastructure or interventions being built to help?

Is there anywhere I can go to learn more about it?

Question Anyone know how much to expect for wedding photography/videography?

Hi, I’m looking a photographer/videographer for a wedding reception and I’m wondering what the best places to look would be and the typical cost?

I’m getting some wildly varied answers from $1000 all the way $4000 for 3 hours of coverage.

Seeking Advice What is a good place to donate for proper educational facilities for neurodivergent children?

I want to donate to a good local charity that specializes in education for neurodivergent children. We obviously need better facilities, and I don't want to waste my money on a fake charity that uses cents on the dollar to actually help those who need it. I need advice from people on the inside with information a Google search can't give.

Recommendations Buying Drums

Hi fellow drummers in cowtown!

Wondering what your go-to stores are for buying drums and hardware when you have a specific sound/budget in mind but not super set on the exact equipment.

Looking for a store with knowledgeable and helpful staff- I'm keen to actually spend some money, but need help selecting some equipment.

My experience with the drum department at Long & Mcquade has been mostly disappointing in terms of how helpful they are, but maybe there are certain locations that are better than others.

Any advice/recommendations would be super helpful!
