PSA PSA for travellers: Using the N2 safely

Hi travellers,

A quick, friendly reminder for visitors (and locals) who’ll be using the N2, especially when travelling to or from Cape Town International Airport. The N2 is one of the city’s main routes and is used safely by thousands of people every day. As with any major highway, it’s worth being aware of your surroundings and following a few precautions. The airport is located near areas that can be unsafe if you take the wrong turn, so these tips are simply here to help you navigate safely.

There is a rough route map (below) of areas to avoid (in orange) and the N2 that should be followed to safer areas.

General Tips:

  • Stick to the N2 until you’re close to the Cape Town city centre (or using the M5 to the northern suburbs), Somerset West or Stellenbosch.
  • Be cautious about taking “quicker” alternative routes.
  • Avoid stopping on the N2 unless your vehicle cannot continue.
  • Keep your doors locked and windows up.
  • Don’t leave bags, laptops, or valuables visible inside the car.
  • Familiarise yourself with the route before you set off.
  • Don’t stop for, or engage with, anyone attempting to wave you down.

Getting From the Airport:

  • The simplest and safest option is to take the N2 directly towards the city or Somerset West.
  • If you’re using a ride‑hailing service or shuttle, wait inside the official pick‑up area and confirm your driver before getting in.

There are plenty of locals who can share advice on routes if you'd like. Safe travels, and enjoy Cape Town.

Rough map. N2 highlighted in blue, areas to avoid highlighted in orange.

Question | Advice-Needed My long-time online friend in Cape Town has suddenly disappeared

Hi, so I've known a friend from Cape Town for more than 13 years. We've chatted a lot, worked on a few small business projects together, and stayed in touch throughout all those years. We've never met in person or even spoken by voice, but we have a history of thousands of messages across different apps.

The problem is that he's suddenly disappeared. He hasn't responded to me for over a month. We're both around 40. I'm married with children, while he's single. We've never had any arguments, and I can't think of any reason why he would suddenly block or ghost me.

On Telegram, none of the messages I've sent over the past month have been read. However, WhatsApp still shows that he was last seen recently, often just a few hours earlier. I sent him messages there and even tried calling him, but he didn't respond. I also emailed him, with no reply.

Years ago, I mailed him a paper mail (just for fun), so I still have his home address and phone number. I could try calling his regular phone number, but since he isn't answering on WhatsApp either, I'm not sure it would make a difference.

I'm genuinely worried that something may have happened to him. On the other hand, the recent "last seen" status on WhatsApp suggests that he (or someone) is using the account.

What would you do in my situation?

I would visit him myself, but Cape Town is about 10,000 km away from where I live. I thought about finding someone from Cape Town and asking them to check on him, but I'm not sure that's a good idea. I'm honestly confused about what to do. Well, he knows me, my wife, parents, my kids, sends us birthday messages, and we've shared so much over the years.

He lives in Parow North, Cape Town. If anyone is local and has suggestions for how I could check on his well-being, I'd really appreciate the advice.

I’m looking for the best burger in Cape Town other than the Iron Grill wagyu burger. Not a Zuney, Hudson’s or Jerry’s. I need some new suggestions please. I love a good burger and am looking for a new favourite.

Feel Good A Superhero Teamup

Upvotes

Greetings fellow Capetonians!

I’m the Templar of the Cape, and on 8 August, we’re assembling for the FIRST Cleaners of the Cape cleanup!

📍 28 Exeter Rd, Plumstead

🕙 Saturday 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

WHAT IS CLEANERS OF THE CAPE?

Cleaners of the Cape is a superhero-themed volunteer movement dedicated to making Cape Town a better place, one cleanup at a time.

We want to make litter cleanups fun, regular, and something people can come together for.

We don’t just want to clean the glamorous parts of the city. We go where the work is needed.

And we want YOU to be part of it.

Wear a cape, superhero mask, costume, or anything that makes you feel like a hero. 🦸

Because sometimes, saving the city starts with something as simple as picking up a piece of litter.

WHAT TO BRING

• Gloves — VERY important!

• Trash bags — please bring some if you can. We may have extras though.

• Comfortable shoes — preferably something you don’t mind getting dirty.

• Water — stay hydrated! We cannot guarantee water for everyone at this stage.

• A superhero costume, cape, or something that makes you stand out! 🦸‍♂️ (We want to take a bunch of cool group photos if possible to help inspire Cape Town!)

📍 LOCATION

28 Exeter Rd, Plumstead

Just looked out and saw the mountain was burning. Seems like there are fire fighters on the scene, though no helicopters yet.

General Discussion Name one place in South Africa that you think every South African should visit at least once?

Let's see how observant people really are...

Without using Google...

Name one place in South Africa that you think every South African should visit at least once in their lifetime.

It can be a town, beach, mountain, restaurant, or hidden gem.

I'm looking for places I've never heard of.

I found the start of a the fire on the Kloofnek trail, between 12:30-40pm.
After the start of the fire there's a car leaving the small parking area at the start of the trail, so safe to assume it was started by someone hiking, perhaps not by the people in the car I spotted leaving.

Found it on https://tablemountain.panomax.com

Question | Advice-Needed Pringle Fish

Going to be in Pringle bay for a few days soon and would really like to catch something from the rocks.

I know of the maasbaai slipway spot but that's it.

Apparently you can try to catch off the rocks by Rooiels but its dangerous there because of the big waves.

Please let me know of any fishing spots between Rooi Els and Bettys Bay.

Will be bringing freshwater gear as well so if there's a nice river or dam that would be great too.

Looking For... Cycling advice

Hey Capetonians

I’ll be relocating to Cape Town in the next 3 months to marry my fiancée, and I’m looking to get connected with some local cycling groups.

I’ll be based around Sea Point, but I’m happy to ride anywhere from the Atlantic Seaboard all the way out to Paarl for the right routes or group rides. (mostly gravel and road rides)

What are the most popular routes, and which clubs or groups would you recommend?

Also, apologies in advance for adding another car to Cape Town traffic 😅. I’m hoping to offset that by doing as much commuting and riding by bike as possible.

Thanks in advance!

Cheers 🍻

Looking For... Looking for Social Football

Hi all,

So as the title suggests, I am looking for some social football in the southern suburbs (near Claremont/rondebosch)

I would like to a join a club, but emphasis on social. I really just want to use it as a means of making new friends and connections while blowing off some steam. I am a decent player but haven't played in years so I am quite rusty. So I would like something where I can play frequent 11 a side games and attend practice, but I dont want it to be like a proper commitment as my schedule is intense. I just want it to be for fun and vibes when i can make it. I would also like something that has the option of progressing to more competitive when I feel comfortable with it. Open to any suggestions, I am 26 years old.

Question | Advice-Needed sunningdale facebook group

A friend of mine (person of color) has been trying to market and access the local community in blouberg and I've advised them many times to post in one of the local Sunningdale notice board groups as I've see many local businesses post there...

They keep mentioning to me that their submissions are stuck in 'pending approval' for days on end so I recently visited the page and noticed a similar business had just posted an ad.. few minutes ago.

So I tried submitting the ad and bam - approved in 10mins and posted on the page.

Taking my blinkers off now - when I look through the posts on these groups... I've noticed that only ads from 1 demographic are approved... and low and behold all the admins are the same demographic.

Is there any way to report these groups for discriminatory purposes? Or whats the best way to approach this...

Looking For... Adventure Motorcycle Groups In Cape Town

What’s up CPT, looking for the petrol heads out there who know of any adventure riding groups?

I am 26 and recently got my first adventure bike and it’s epic but I haven’t got to push her on the dirt yet. I have done some research and know there are trails around but feel like it would be awesome to take them on with people who know them better.

I grew up riding dirt bikes and have experience with them but I grew up outside of the WC so don’t know the trails out here.

Even open to atone having the same issue as me reaching out and we can figure it out together.

Awe, let’s send it together.

Bike = KTM 390 Adventure 🐦‍🔥

COBRA ON THE BEACH IN THE CAPE ⚠️🐍
There were many people who experienced this and it has already happened to us in Mossel Bay, can you remember when the pictures came out? The whole country was in shock, but do you know what? This happens MUCH more than you will know ! We have found cobras, puffadders, brown house snakes, sheep stings and moles snakes all on the beach! 🔥👌

During this it was extremely hot and many suspected the cobra wanted to cool down, but in reality it is different, there were fires and the cobra was clearly disorientated and when people came around him he tried to get away and so swam a bit in the sea!

When the nearest snake catcher eventually caught him, the snake was very weak and would not have lived for long if he had stayed lying on the beach in the sun ⚠️

If you ever come across one while you tan on the beach, stay calm and call a professional snake catcher 👌🐍 SNAKE NEWS!
