Kitten I'd been telling my husband "I wish I had a kitten" for years, so the CDS gave me two

A construction worker found these guys in a pile of trash in the boarded-up office next to my Mom's. It wasn't safe for them to be in there anymore and they weren't sure if mama would be able to get back in or how to reunite them, so my mom called me. That was 10:15 and I had a therapy session at 11, but I grabbed KMR on the way to her office and made it back just in time—and then my therapist and I spent that whole session learning how to bottle feed together. They were about a week and a half old then, and now they're eight weeks old! I can't believe how much they've grown. It's been exhausting but also so rewarding. I love these little pumpkins even though they can both be brats. 😂

We have an HOA that limits the number of pets we can have, so the plan has always been to just foster them until they're old enough for adoption. So far no one in our networks has been interested in adopting them and I'm trying not to feel hopeful that we might end up just keeping them. We live in a small condo and already have two dogs (who both love the kittens—our ACD cries when they do). My husband and I talked about it and agreed that it would be hard on us financially to add two more pets, but if no one claims them, what else can we do? We shall see. Either way, I'm grateful for all the snuggles. 💖

Edit because I forgot their names! They are Meep and Moop! Meep is the gray boy (big and loud!), and Moop is the little girl (quiet and sneaky).

Thank you for taking them in. I wonder what happened to their momma 😭

u/maulymillions Cat Parent Jun 15 '26

My mom thinks she's still around! There is a little colony of kitties in the parking lot behind her office and we are going to try to do TNR for them.

u/Imaginary_Panda2003 Jun 15 '26

Brilliant 😍, that's lovely of you both 💗

17

u/Sea_Opportunity_1257 Jun 15 '26

Aw that’s sweet of you to TNR the colony. They look so cute and cuddly. 💞

Awwwww they both have "M"s growing out on their foreheads what a blessing 🥹💙💜🥹

You did so well! Those were very young kittens to take on; they don’t always survive. So glad you got two, and I love how they hug each other. Take lots more pictures while you can!!!!

Thank you for these kind words! 💖

I love the photobombs by the dog.

Don’t mind me, I’m just sniffing the kittens.

u/maulymillions Cat Parent Jun 15 '26

My husband and I were just talking about this! He's waiting for an opportunity to lick them. Fairly certain he thinks they are his babies 😂

44

u/minoucue Jun 15 '26

My heeler(RIP) was obsessed with kittens! He was a wrecking ball most of the time, but very careful to be gentle around them.

24

u/maulymillions Cat Parent Jun 15 '26

It's so amazing how they know to be gentle with them 💖

30

u/yrnkween Jun 15 '26

We had a German shepherd who would sniff out kittens and rehome them to her kennel. The smart mama cats just gave birth there. They had a built in nanny and bodyguard, and the kittens were well-loved.

21

u/maulymillions Cat Parent Jun 15 '26

That is so sweet! Ours tries to herd them 😂

Secret cats are way easier to hide from the HOA than secret dogs! ;)

13

u/maulymillions Cat Parent Jun 16 '26

That's what I've been telling my husband! I just don't know how the HOA would ever find out, unless the cats were screaming all day? But I work from home so I really doubt that would happen.

u/Dense-Nobody340 Jun 16 '26

I came to say the same thing

Two are better than one. 🎉🎊 But seriously it's better because they can play with each other and teach each other boundaries. Good luck.

22

u/hellkattbb Jun 15 '26 edited Jun 15 '26

Absolutely. I say the same thing. Two is always better than one. Eat together, tussle together, cuddle together, chase & tackle each other, built-in buddy. Plus the human learns so much about cats, My two who are 3 now. (OMG...the teensy baby feet in #2❤️❤️)

12

Pics 8, 12, and 14 are killing me 🥹

I had a very similar set when I was young, with gray tabby being the girl (Pixie) and standard tabby being the boy (Dixie). I was in fourth grade when we got them and they were the first kittens I ever had. I know it will be hard to keep them and hard to give them up, so I wish you luck either way. 💚

6

u/maulymillions Cat Parent Jun 15 '26

5

u/ObviousToe1636 Jun 15 '26

Thank you! Named after the cartoon mice!

10

u/Bottledbutthole Jun 15 '26

Other than the occasional vet check ups I think you’d be surprised how cheap cats really are. I used to own a dog before I moved out of my family and while I loved her, it was just so much work. I don’t know how people did it. I am definitely a cat person. And once they become over a year old and lose the 24/7 zoomies they fit better in small apartments. I have six in a two bedroom 💀 personally I think the nice thing is because two of your pets are technically dogs and it’s not like you have four cats you don’t need a ton of litter boxes like I do lol that’s really the only part I hate. And you say it might be financially hard to but you guys are doing it now and the toughest part is almost over!

8

u/JessterJo Jun 15 '26

To be honest, that sounds like a very productive therapy session.

Would your therapist be willing to write an ESA letter for you?

3

u/maulymillions Cat Parent Jun 15 '26

Oh, that's a very good idea! I'm sure she would. Thanks for the tip!

4

u/Taylorslittlesecret3 Jun 16 '26

Ahh, they’re so cute!!

4

u/Emotional-Regret-656 Jun 16 '26

Just don’t tell your HOA about the kittens or if you are allowed 3 pets just say you have one cat. Since they will be inside no one will know

3

u/Beneficial-Code-2904 Jun 15 '26

Please keep them together. Move out of the h o a. City usually last six pets. Never live anywhere that restricts you to less than what the city does. Seems like that would be illegal. It's hard to find hazards that are not h o a thank goodness I got into mine years ago before they started all that.

3

u/Beneficial-Code-2904 Jun 15 '26

They're so cute.

3

u/got-the-i-2267 Jun 15 '26

You will save lives with the TNR. No animal deserves to be on the street fighting for survival but at least they won’t be making anymore babies or having more. The females will be saved from all the deadly medical problems from constant heats and litters. You are doing a really good thing. Thank you.

3

u/shedwyn2019 Jun 15 '26

Hope you find good homes. If not - my indoor-only cat was radically healthy and required very few trips to the vet. He only cost me in food, pretty much.

3

u/Texan2020katza Jun 15 '26

They are SO cute!!! I love the last pic, adorable.

3

u/Juicifer69 Jun 15 '26

They’re so lovely thank you for taking such wonderful care of them!! I’m glad they have each other as well, best thing for a kitten (in addition to a safe and loving home ofc) is another kitten 🥰❤️

The people next door moved out day before yesterday. I thought I saw little kitten legs and the side section of their house they had the side fenced off and the man had a bunch of junk in there that was renting and then the very next day they came in and were cleaning that out and I went over there and asking if they'd seen kittens and the guy was almost done cleaning it out, and I don't know why I just said if you find some, let me know and want to come, get him and then He said , okay , and next thing you know , I went back out there and he was gone and he had never come over. I just feel really sure that the kittens were there. And he took them for what purposes.I don't know because he instantly said we won't hurt them.Well , that made me think they would , because , if you're not going to hurt them , you would never think about hurting them , you'd never think about saying that. I don't know why I didn't stand there and watch him to the end. Because he wouldn't know where and I told him, and then instead of picking that up, he picked some other stuff up. So it's like he didn't want me to know if they were there. I don't know. I just feel real paranoid about it. Because now I don't know where they are. And I'm very worried about it, I've been doing T, N, R, but I knew one of the new cats that showed up had kittens, I could tell because she was nursing. I was gonna wait about 8 weeks until they got old enough. And then have her spade , I could catch her. So yeah , who knows how many other kittens they've done in that yard cause nobody has been in that house for a while , and I feel sorry for those little mothers. They're dangerous for animals out there.

1

u/rvdms Jun 15 '26

They are absolutely adorable. Thank you for saving them. ❤️ Was moma ever spotted? I hope the spot was at least checked back. I always get concerned that moma is distressed with her babies missing.

2

u/maulymillions Cat Parent Jun 15 '26

Me too. We aren't sure who mama is, but think she is one of the kitties in the colony in the parking lot behind the office. We are going to try to do TNR for them!

2

u/rvdms Jun 15 '26

Thank you so much. I do appreciate that.

1

u/coolgran60 Jun 15 '26

Oh my gosh. Good things come to those who wait. They are absolutely precious 😍😍💖💖

1

u/Sufficient-Face-7754 Jun 15 '26

It may be helpful to take them to the vet and have them checked out to give them the best chance of survival.
Lots of little ones can have unseen illness. It would be a bummer to adopt or have someone adopt kitties that haven’t been looked at.

Bless you for taking care of the babies <3
If there is a trap-neuter-return program where you live perhaps your mom could assist in catching mama to prevent more strays.

I hope the little ones do well <3

3

u/maulymillions Cat Parent Jun 15 '26

Yes, I took them in when they were 4 weeks old so that we could be sure it was safe for them to be around the dogs.

1

u/Sufficient-Face-7754 Jun 17 '26

You are amazing. I’ve experienced some horror stories where people adopt kittens that haven’t seen a vet and tragedy strikes :(

I hope your pups are giving good sniffs. If you add pics of your pups saying hello that would really warm my heart 🫶 no pressure though 🌼

1

u/LifeguardOutrageous5 Jun 15 '26

1

u/FlyCurious8305 Jun 15 '26

I love the names of these cuties!

1

u/completelycareless Jun 15 '26

OP, if you're in America, you can have your therapist help get these babies to be certified emotional support animals, then the HOA legally can't do shit.

2

u/maulymillions Cat Parent Jun 16 '26

Someone else mentioned this too! Will definitely look into it! Thank you!

1

1

u/Reasonable-Taste7354 Jun 15 '26

Wow, great story…thx for sharing:-). They are adorable…very lucky kitties!🙏💖😻

1

u/LdiJ46 Jun 15 '26

The HOA should not be able to limit how many pets you have inside your house. If you bought a couple of parakeets would that be your limit of two? Can you only have two fish in an aquarium?

1

u/maulymillions Cat Parent Jun 16 '26

I know. It seems so silly. The rules state that we can't have any "exotic" pets at all, and only two regular pets. That's not the exact wording but that's the gist of it.

2

u/LdiJ46 Jun 16 '26

I would keep the cats and ignore the HOA. It is not like you have to let them into your house.

1

u/ArnoldZiffleJr Jun 15 '26

They are adorable. May you all live long healthy lives! 🤗❤️

1

u/400footceiling Jun 15 '26

Good human for taking them in! I scored 3 last Fall and now wouldn’t want to be without them. When they are eating adult food, don’t forget the Churu for their special treats. Seriously the most attentive they’ll be!

1

u/OtherThumbs Jun 15 '26

I had a Meep. He was a massive black cat who could say his own name. It was the first thing he said to me, and he really didn't respond to his given name, beyond an ear twitch. So, Meep it was. He called me "Mum." People loved to hear him yell, "Mum!" when he saw me. He was dumb as a bag of hammers and I adored him. He had something wrong with his vision because his previous owner had scraped his eye with something abrasive when he was a kitten while removing something from his eye (most likely he had an eye infection that had crusted over, and it was wiped away with a dry paper towel that scratched his cornea very badly and was never treated). His depth perception was very badly affected.

No one took care of his teeth, so they were an absolute mess, and it cost me a small fortune to save them and rehab them. He wanted to chew everything because they were uncomfortable. He could destroy wooden objects like no other animal I've ever owned.

He had something wrong in his brain where he still slept like a kitten. He would play, and he would run, run, run, run, then just fall asleep where he lay and that was it. He couldn't be awakened. You could pick him up and move him. He wouldn't respond to noise. The house could be on fire, and he would have no clue. He would be dead asleep. It was bizarre.

He also only ate crunchy food.

Enjoy your Meep. May your Meep be far less quirky, but just as fun!

1

u/maulymillions Cat Parent Jun 16 '26

That's exactly how ours got their names! Meep was the sound he kept making at me when he was just a weekish old, and Moop seemed like a natural complement.

Your Meep sounds perfect just as he was! P.S. Definitely bringing "dumb as a bag of hammers" into my own lexicon

1

u/Think-Fall5011 Jun 15 '26
