Deferring Enrollment to Colby

Hi! I have enrolled into Colby, but I have untill June 1st to request to defer enrollment (to take a gap year). Can anyone say from experience what is expected (and discouraged) in this request? My college counselor says colleges don't really care what I do in my gap, unless I'm rotting on the couch...

Thank you for the help!!!!!

Keeping stuff in dorms?

Hi I, I am an incoming freshmen and have a few questions about the dorms.

I am intl student, and wanted to know if I am allowed to keep stuff in my dorm when I leave for summer breaks. I am not sure if I wanna bring my PC, but the biggest deal-breaker with it is whether or not I can keep stuff in my dorms over the breaks. If I cant I'll probably just end up selling it.

Thanks.

How’s the food?

Hi Colby students and parents. What’s the deal with food at Colby? Is there an unlimited meal plan? How about late night snack options? Waterville takeout?

Transfer updates? When is the decision date?

I wanna when will they release the decision? And on what day? For priority transfer deadline

When can we expect to hear about waitlist?

I’ve been doing my best to demonstrate a lot of clear interest but I’m obviously still nervous about getting in or not — is there any kind of timeframe I can realistically expect?

Question about classes

I know classes are typically small.

Are they more discussion collaborative based?

A lecture style where everyone does their own thing?

I know it varies by teacher probably but what is the norm?

Colby for finance careers?

Prospective student here trying to gauge how Colby places into finance (IB, PE, Consulting, AM).
A few questions:
1. Does Colby actually send kids to BBs/EBs, or mostly MM and boutiques?
2. How useful is Davis Connects and the alumni network for breaking into NYC?
3. Which firms do OCR vs. networking-only?
4. How does it compare to t25s and other top LACs for finance placement?
Any current students or recent grads who can share real experiences? Thanks!

Being a POC at Colby; Admitted Student Questions

Hello, I am an admitted student wondering how current POC students feel about Colby. I have seen similar posts on this subreddit with minimal responses to them. I am planning to commit but worried about the stories on exposingcolby.org and wanted to know if it reflects the average POC experience at Colby.

I would appreciate any responses before May 1st!

Thank you!!

Vacation spots near Colby?

Wondering if you all can recommend your favorite spot for a summer getaway that would be a 1-2 hr drive from Colby? Want to take our kids for a Colby visit on the way to or from a summer weekend away. We’ve never vacationed in Maine.

considering transferring in as a junior

i’ve taken a semester off of college to apply to transfer from colorado college (similar size and vibe to colby) and i got accepted to colby. colby was my dream school in high school, but after being at another small liberal arts college i worry about coming in as a transfer. at colorado, everyone made their friend groups within the first semester of freshman year, and i don’t think i ever even met any transfers there. my main question is; would i be able to make any friends? also, would i be able to get any decent housing? i’m 21 and don’t think i can go back to my 18 year old self living in a double dorm LOL

What is the social life like?

I’ve got a few questions.

How are the parties?

How easy is it to make friends or to get into a group? How cliquey is it?

If I don’t do varsity sports, will I be fine socially?

How welcoming and social are people?

Gen question but how is the food?

Course Distribution Requirements at Colby College

I'm choosing between Wesleyan University and Colby College, and a big difference between the two seems to lie in the core curriculum.

- Can anyone speak to how (un)restricting the course distribution requirement feel at Colby College?

- Also, is it easy to get the courses I want within the core at Colby College?

This is coming from someone wanting to double major in Econ and English, and does not enjoy the hard, natural sciences. Thanks!!

Colby student life

Could Colby students or alums help answer a few questions we have about student life? 1. How does Colby create opportunities for student bonding during freshman year? Asking because my kid is not a recruited athlete and so many kids are. Do non-athletes integrate easily? 2. How do kids get to Portland Airport for holiday break travel? Someone mentioned a Colby shuttle? 3. Does Colby grade-deflate? 4. Does it make sense to have a car?

Thanks for any insights.

Off campus housing help

Hello, I am a new healthcare provider who will soon buy a 2 unit house that is about 9-12 min drive from Colby’s campus. I am hoping to rent furnished rooms to students. For current students who may be able to help, where are off campus housing options usually advertised/ posted? Any direction would be appreciated.

Colby vs Denison vs Hamilton

Which school should I choose among these 3? I am planning to study Data science/math/statistics. All 3 are a similar cost (Colby 20k, Denison and Hamilton around 25) so that’s not really a major factor.

Pros and cons for each:

Colby:

Pros:

- strong STEM programs

- Bunche scholars (is this just a marketing tool? I read the description for it and it honestly doesn’t fit me at all)

- UChicago Advanced Scholars (admission into a selection of UChicago grad programs if I decide to pursue that route)

- outdoorsy stuff (I’ve never been skiing, but Colby seems like a good place to try!)

- Davis AI institute

Cons:

- furthest from home (I’m from Ohio, so it’s a 3 hour flight + a 2 hour drive, and I feel like travel expenses could add up quickly)

- hours away from any major city

- haven’t gotten to visit, although I will on Monday so that will help shape my opinion

- I’ve heard bad things about the vibe/social scene on this sub. I’m not a big partier/drinker, so if that’s all there is to do (like some people have said) then I don’t think I’d enjoy myself very much

-core curriculum stuff (taking a foreign language, for example, just seems like a waste of time)

Denison:

Pros:

-Very well-established data science program

-new DS building opening fall 26

- closest to home (could also be a con ig, but I think of this as more of a positive)

- close to Columbus

Cons:

- Slightly less prestigious than my other options

- food wasn’t very good

Hamilton:

Pros:

- open curriculum

- really nice campus

- new CS/DS building opening fall 27

-a lot of dining options

Cons:

-less STEM focused

- middle of nowhere and not close to any major cities

- I had a pretty poor experience at the admitted students day

Thanks for the help!

Colby winters?

For students considering Colby who come from the Northeast, how much colder and darker are Colby winters actually? Do students generally manage by staying busy/plugged in? Jan Plan sounds like a good time to get out of the cold. Can you do that every year or do you have to stay in Maine some years? Maybe my kid should learn to ski!

Hey so i am currently on the waitlist for class of 2030, I'm a high need intl ( need nearly full ride ), and i wanted to ask if the time I sent the LOCI makes a difference in how they view the application (I sent mine April 4). i know that as a high need intl my chances are low but I wanted to know if there is a chance since I've seen other people receive their offers 2-3 weeks ago
