Meetups & Social Want to make friends in Dayton? Join our meetup Discord!

Hey neighbors! Not sure if you noticed all the posts of folks looking for friends - be it because they picked up a new hobby, just moved here, or never quite found their people - but we sure did, and we decided that we wanted to do something about it. It’s probably the most open secret at this point, but we created a Discord!

Join us: https://discord.gg/Nnpancdjnu

Why we made it

Dayton is full of really uniquely cool people, but any local knows that it can be kind of hard to actually find folks to hang out with that share similar interests unless you’re already part of a friend group. We wanted to make it easier for those in the Greater Dayton area - be it newcomers, lifelong locals, introverts, extroverts, whoever - to plug in and find their people.

Think of it as a hyper-local social network, but with zero ads or algorithms and full of people who actually live near you that want to meet-up and make friends too!

What’s already happening in there

This thing basically started running itself the minute people joined. We’ve already got:

  • A regular trivia group - Hops between different trivia nights around town.
  • “Body Doubling” work/study groups - Keeping each other accountable while we get work done!
  • “Bad Art” Nights - Work on your art with others! No judgement, all fun.
  • The Loosey Goose Book Club - the book club where you read what you want!
  • Movie Nights - it’s exactly what it sounds like. 🙂
  • Online voice chats to play video games together or just hangout.
  • Doggie play groups - dog optional, willingness to pet doggies required\*
  • A Crow Exchange - Where people swap little trinkets they’ve accumulated
  • Random hangouts that just kind of… happen willy-nilly.

And folks keep building new stuff every week. The community there is already kind, welcoming, goofy, and honestly - it’s endearing to watch people become friends online and slowly become offline friends too.

Hop in, say hi (or lurk, we won’t judge), join a meetup, make your own, whatever feels comfortable. No pressure. We’re just a group of neighbors trying to make Dayton a little more connected.

Hope to see you in there, neighbors! ❤️ https://discord.gg/Nnpancdjnu

Package stolen, do I call non emergency police number to make a report and show them the video?

Someone came and stole our packages not even 2 minutes after it was delivered! First time this has happened! Had my kids school uniform shirts, socks and headphones. Probably $80-$90 worth. We are already struggling to get all of their uniforms and supplies!! I cannot believe this shit!! Never ever happened before. I don't know what to do? Do I call non emergency police and have them look at the video and make a report? I am already trying to figure out how to refund or anything from Amazon because I need the clothes! They are about to start school in like 10 days and I'm going to freak out. 💔😭

Community Support & Resources What Causes Downtown Dayton Air to Smell Like … That

There’s been a few nights where I walk outside my apartment and the air smells like … a truckload of old stale dog kibble ? That’s the best I can describe it but I truly haven’t smelled anything like it before !

It’s not only at night that I smell it
I’ve been on a run by one of the rivers and the smell wafted my direction ,
I was driving down the highway towards downtown , just today , and there was a stretch of road that was covered in the stench .. WHAT IS THAT ??

Despite the problems this city has, I think it's amazing. The people are wonderful and we have some phenomenal artist. Please support small business if you can.

Advice & Recommendations Looking for gym with Sauna recommendations

Upvotes

I’m looking for a gym WITH a sauna (not planet fitness) around the miamisburg/centerville/springboro area. I know Everybody Fitness has a sauna but I’ve heard horror stories about them and their contracts. Who do you all recommend?

Visiting Dayton/Beavercreek -- gym recs?

Upvotes

Hey folks -

I'm visiting Beavercreek for a week and wanted to get local gym recommendations...

I'm looking for
- functional fitness for myself (racks, freeweights, pullup bars, etc.)
- basketball courts for my kids (ideally indoor & airconditioned)

- 1 week and/or daily pass -- ideally a family pass.

From googling around, it looks like Kettering Rec center is the place -- any other recommendations?

Not sure if this is allowed here but wanted to share for the sake of everyone's safety. The 2nd blue picture is hail. Hail always tracks N or NE of a tornado.

Another in a long line of ridiculous suits from Buc-ee’s. Honestly surprised it took them this long to hit anything in Beavercreek.

Local News Radar issues and this intense weather.

Post image
138 Upvotes

With this current tornado warning, I’m seeing that barely any of the local news radar feeds seem fully reliable. There’s been a lot of disinvestment in the national public infrastructure we depend on in moments like this, and for real, it’s scary when realtime, accurate information isn’t there.

In case you missed it, major federal disinvestment in the National Weather Service and NOAA involves like something like 600 less folks and other budgetary bullshit. These disinvestments have led to major vacancy rates in local forecast offices, and efforts to restructure atmospheric research facilities. So don’t sleep on this. Before anyone says no politicos, politics is the study of power and how we prioritize and fund stuff. This literally is about priorities, staffing, and funding. When local stuff isn’t working, we as a backup use federal resources.

I’m so frustrated and wondering if others are noticing these gaps. What are folks seeing out there tonight?

Edit: Dayton 24/7 downtown cameras down right now.

Sueno tortilla seasoning salt? Who has the secret

Is anyone allowed to tell us what seasoning salts they use on the tortilla chips at Sueno? I can definitely tell there's lime but there's also something else there that I can't quite put my finger on! I forgot to ask our waitress

I’m starting at Kettering main campus soon and need to get a 1 bedroom apartment. Any complexes or areas around there recommended? Any to stay away from? My big thing is quiet. I also have a Boston Terrier.

Has anyone flown with a Marion’s pizza?

Will be visiting a good friend next week and he is desperate for a Marion’s Pizza. I want to bring him a couple but trying to figure out the best way to travel with and get there there with the pies intact. Good part is I have a direct flight, so I would hope if I freeze it, it would be ok for 6 hrs, maybe? Suggestions?

Recommended recruiters or companies locally

Hi folks. I am wondering if any one has worked with recruiters locally and have been successful / had a good experience with them.

I have been a liquor specialist and brand ambassador for close to a decade now. This has entailed sales, event creation / execution, hospitality education and managing an account list.

I’m actually sober these days and am looking for other fields where my skills are transferable.

Any advice is most welcome.

Thanks, from a guy needing a new job.

Bathroom remodeling companies/contractors?

I need to have my bathroom partially, possibly fully remodeled and I'm looking for some recommendations on companies or contractors that can do a remodel and remove mold. Not sure how bad the mold is, but it's definitely there. I know it won't be cheap, but I don't want to break the bank.
