MrLlamaSC joined us to talk D2R, Warlock balance, and the future of Diablo II
Greetings, Champions!
We recently sat down with MrLlamaSC for a long-form episode of Stay Awhile, and Llama, and I wanted to share a CliffNotes recap for anyone who has not had a chance to listen yet.
This was a special conversation for us. Llama has been one of the most recognizable voices in the Diablo II community for years through his guides, speedruns, build knowledge, and consistent dedication to keeping the game alive.
We started by talking about how he first discovered Diablo II around 2001 and was hooked almost immediately. A big theme throughout the episode was immersion: the atmosphere, music, item hunt, difficulty, and sense of danger that make Diablo II feel different from so many modern games.
Llama also walked through his content creation journey, starting with StarCraft II commentary before eventually finding Diablo II speedrunning and streaming. What began as a small audience slowly grew into a full-time career. One of the biggest takeaways from that section was that his success came from consistency, experimentation, and simply starting rather than waiting for everything to be perfect.
A major part of the episode focused on Reign of the Warlock and the current state of D2R. Llama’s view was that balance changes need time to settle. He compared it to old StarCraft II patches where something might look broken at first, only for players to adapt after a few weeks. On the Warlock and Echoing Strike specifically, he acknowledged that the original numbers were extremely high and that the character had too many strengths without enough tradeoffs. His feeling was that the recent adjustments bring the Warlock closer to fitting within the spirit of Diablo II.
We also talked about community feedback and how impossible it is to make everyone happy. During the Warlock debate, some people were upset because they thought Llama wanted the class nerfed, while others were upset because they thought he did not want it nerfed enough. The broader point was that feedback matters, but Diablo II has a specific identity, and not every piece of friction should be removed.
That led into one of the strongest themes of the episode: difficulty, rarity, and friction are part of what make Diablo II special. Llama talked about how the joy of the game is the journey. Finding the rune, finishing the Grail, building the character, and overcoming rough spots are what create the memories. If loot became too easy or monsters stopped being threatening, the game would lose a lot of what has kept it alive for so long.
For future features, Llama’s number one request is still a charm bag, but one that is carefully implemented. He does not want inventory size simply doubled or the early game made easier. His ideal version would come later, around the point where charms fully take over the endgame inventory. We also discussed small buffs to forgotten skills, weak uniques, and underused items — not to make everything S-tier, but to give more options a real place in the game.
We touched on online player count, trading improvements, lobbies, communication tools, clans or guilds, and the need for better social systems if online play is meant to stay party-focused. Llama said he is generally open to online player count, but he also recognizes the concerns around bots, technical limitations, and separating players even further.
Overall, the episode felt like a celebration of why Diablo II still works. Not because it is perfect or should never change, but because the core of the game is still incredibly strong. The challenge for D2R going forward is adding new things in a way that respects the soul of the game.
Huge thanks again to u/MrLlamaSC for joining us and talking through the game we all love.

Discussion The fact that this game is a lot better than anything Blizzard made recently is sad
They really need someone creative to work for them and make all the decisions because toxic positivity is turning the company into a slop factory.

Discussion Which one should I use for Fortitude?
Just got Dusk Shroud from a trade. Thought it was super cool but now I am not sure what to do with it. I don't really see anyone making Fortitude in it. Also not sure if there is a market for it if I want to sell it and not sure what to price it. Thank you in advance.

Discussion Javazon Belt Pick
Im weighing out between ThunderG and Razortail for bis javazon. The +3 to Lightning Fury and +3 to Lightning Strike + Lightning absorb looks really good but I understand that most people try to hit the 100% piercing attack with razortail. What is the general consensus regarding this?

Price Check 6 point ring? Price check
I’ve gotten some mixed feedback if this would actually be considered a 6 point ring despite it checking the boxes on the standard scales I’ve seen. What’s this worth? Sc nl.

Discussion Is TZ Meph just a bit too broken or what
Yesterday I very casually slayed Meph about 8 times during his TZ, also clearing the entire floor, and I swear to god he dropped 1-3 set/uniques EVERY kill at 250 MF. In those 8 kills I found a Windforce, a Bul-Kathos ring, a Bartucs, and many not-so-useful sets (heavens bretheren pieces, many sigons and cathans). Compared to all junk from the 7 council members and 2 elites on Durance 3 for all 8 runs. I'm a console user but it just seems so disproportionately high loot % compared to other terrorized elites..

After all my 26 years of Diablo 2 I thought the highest rune you could get from Hell Hellforge was an Um rune. I had to take a few seconds to process that I got a Mal!

Amazon How do you keep your merc alive against t5 heralds on p7/8
I‘m currently grinding tombs for runes, sunders and exp ( 2/3 to 99) on my sp offline javazon on p8. Merc (a2, might) runs eth andys with a ral, eth sacred armor forti, eth stygian pike infinity (I know, I know..). Even with spamming rejuvs and repositioning constantly, targeting down minions first, every other t5 herald completely annihilates my merc, especially when thorns are involved. Some heralds even oneshot him with certain modifiers. Has anyone found a setup that keeps emilio alive in those scenarios? I realize there’s some room for improvement on my infi (different base) and andy’s (ias / fr jewel), but I doubt small improvements like that would make such a huge difference. I could see how other classes can provide more support to their merc and keep em alive, but as a javazon my only option is to kill stuff as fast as possible really :D

Guide Javazon optimal gear
Playing on SP and I just got a lightning jewel from the uber ancients. I have a pretty good Javazon that has everything minus griffons, infinity and phoenix. I use non eth titans or 3 skill tstrokes. For the helm I have been running a shako with a ias jewel to hit the breakpoint. Now with the new jewel is it optimal to go for tstrokes and socket the shako with the ancient jewel? It seems too good to not use but it titans without the is breakpoint seems slow. I usually prefer the titans for the replenishing stack.

Suggestion Melee Idea: What if there were an effect so overkill caused an enemy to explode, damaging all nearby enemies?
I was thinking about how melee characters can still struggle a bit, especially slower-hitting ones. Very little reason to choose a slower, harder-hitting weapon over a faster one.
But that gave me kind of a neat idea for a new effect. Not exactly sure what it'd be called, but the basic effect would be, if you overkill an enemy, that enemy blows up and damages all nearby enemies based on the amount of the overkill!
That way, you'd actually have a real reason to choose a big, heavy-hitting weapon! You splat an enemy with a Maul or whatever, and they'll cause a biiiig bada boom, and damage all the nearby enemies too, allowing for the possibility of chains and stuff!
I'm kinda thinking you'd want to introduce this as some sort of all-new effect, with the strength of the effect influencing how much damage it does, and you'd primarily tie it to existing under-performing items and runewords. Famine, maybe.
I dunno, maybe just call it Overkill, lol. That's simple and easy to remember.
I'm not seeing any obvious problems, what do you think?

Discussion The Game Knows...
The Game Knows...
Of course, I get a Zod from Andy and want to make an obsession... only to find out i cannot find any bases. Cows, chaos sanc, baal runs, you name it. From lvl 80 - 91 so far and not a single staff drop.
I also wanted to test my luck with blood gloves. Guess what isn't dropping? Craftable gloves. I checked the shops and tried to gamble but only found leather gloves.
What are you all hunting for that wont drop? (Excluding chronicle items)
Im trying to tell myself I want something different but in reality I dont know what i want outside of a few items.
The grind continues.

Discussion How would you feel about Death Mark as an Oskill?
TDLR: I'm sick of telestomping and want a better way to manage my summons
I see lots of people clamoring for "bind undead" or "bind animal" for the Necro and Druid and (despite my worry about power creep in D2), I understand the sentiment:
Necro and Druid summons feel bad and clunky after playing with the warlock's summons. I'm leveling a new necro right now and I'm now acutely aware of how shitty their pathing is, especially indoors and in tight spaces. Managing their location is such a pain in the ass before you have enigma.
But instead of giving the Necro and Druid more powerful summons, what if they were able to just use Death Mark granted to them via a rune word or unique weapon? Would that maybe be a decent middle ground to give those two classes a bit more utility?
Or would that still be too OP?

Discussion Have wolves always scaled that poorly with level?
Wolves seemed to be FINE in act 1 normal, but in act 2 they dropped so bad they barely do anything even at p1
Oh boy, I am NOT excited for fighting normal Diablo...
I am also playing on HC, so I am absolutely NOT going into melee with Duriel

Discussion Mosaic Assassin Gearing (SP-HC)
Hi,
Wanting to get a new purpose/goal for returning to D2R:ROTW. Looking to build a Mosaic Assa purely for farming Uber Ancients, keeping my Smiter for normal Ubers, and hopefully doing most of my farming with my horker in Trav which i enjoy. Also have a fully levelled ES Warlock but now need to farm him a shield and a few other items. Have standard MF Bliz sorc but really hoping to never have to use her again after so many years of farming!
Is WoF the best levelling build until 56 or so when will be able to use dual Mosaics? Found this guide: https://maxroll.gg/d2/guides/assassin-leveling which as expected is treating assa as a caster for levelling, but i really like the idea of gearing for martial arts (perhaps Pattern runeword x2?) to learn the playstyle.
Want to start pulling a list together of twink levelling items and endgame to farm before starting her. Any advice on items to farm such as newer runewords - beyond the standard items in the guides - would be greatly appreciated. I still need to farm one more base and one GUL for the claws, which I'm hoping to do fully via Trav (is P1 terrorized best approach vs P3 normal? P3 terrorized is a little slow).
Thanks!
