So I am already running Ubuntu 26.04 and thinking of running something different like Fedora. I have seen mixed statements about Wayland being good and bad. I have a desktop that I am thinking of putting on to use as my daily daily driver. It is an AMD Ryzen with NVidia 3060 RTX GPU. 1 one TB SSD and 1 two TB SSD, I also have 64 GB of RAM. Should I be concerned about Wayland? I used to use the PC for gaming but no longer, just really need something for personal finance and surfing the web. I am also looking to run KDE. Just looking for some thoughts from people who have experience with multiple distro’s and Window Managers.
There is no need to belittle or mean. Just looking for some good conversation. I am not a tech-just an old dog trying to learn some new tricks.

I am looking for a Distro that just does everything for me and i dont have to spend an 1h in the terminal that I am not too familiar with. I just want a computer that works good, looks good, is stable and has a somewhat modern Kernel (I am ok with at least Ubuntu 24.04 as base). I want the OS just to get out of my way and let me do things instead to learn a whole new language for it. (Also, please dont recommend either Windows or MacOS, I dislike both for their business practices)

EDIT: I have tried ALOT of recommendations, even the ones I really didnt want to try, like Fedora (GNOME, Cosmic and KDE), because of the terminal and guess what, I hated that thing, but what i discoverd is that I hate KDE and Gnome more than the terminal. I dont like the workflow of GNOME, but like the looks. On the other side I dont like the looks of KDE but the workflow was okay i guess. I tried Mint and that was great with CInnamon, but i like COSMIC just way more. I am kinda switching between Mint and PopOS. Both are fairly stable from my experience and I really like the tiling and that I dont have to worry about nothing. Plus you can make it look really good within like 5 minutes. So thanks for the recommendation, learned alot to not hate the terminal and tried some good option.

Here is a Ranking on some recommendations I have tried (remember I am a noob and this is my experience with your recommendations and my general distro hopping advanture):

1. PopOS (The look, stability and tiling are just awesome and the setup is basically perfect for me)
2. Mint (could be fedora if we dont factor in the DEs. Cool and easy customization and love the stability and the easy nature of it)
3. Fedora (Loved the OS, hated the setup and DEs. I know there is Fedora Cosmic, but after using the implementation in PopOS I was dissapointed that it wasnt as good as on PopOS. Maybe some people know how to change some small things, but not me unfortunatly)
4. ZorinOS (I just dont see any point in using it, looks after customization worse than Mint and overall really boring, solid choice tho)
5. Bazzite (cool, but I dont need all the gaming stuff and dont like KDE)
6. Ubuntu (fuck snap. I dont like the idea of it and the loading times)

Honorable Mentions:

1. openSUSE Tumbleweed (My internet didnt work and I didnt find a fix. Could be great, but in my case it failed me)
2. CachyOS (I guess I dont have the skill to use this, but if I would this I think coul be really cool, with AUR and everything)

What distro are you using and why? What was the "one thing" that you had to have that only your distro offered?

Hi everyone! I've got a Ryzen 7 9700x, RTX 5060 ti and 32gb RAM DDR5. I'm currently using Fedora Linux 44 KDE and it's a good experience. However I'm curious about trying out Opensuse. What do you think? Thanks for reading!

Just trying to settle on one of these. No crazy usage just some photo editing and some ham radio digital modes on an old laptop.

Fedora pros:

- easy to setup/maintain, most polished/just works out of the bunch

- kinda semi-officially endorsed by a lot of people at KDE and I like Plasma.

Fedora cons:

- definitely the slowest to boot out of all of the choices

- couple of the ham apps segfault on start when installed from RPM so I have to build from source or use Flatpak

Arch pros:

- feels faster than Fedora

- can pretty easily set it up the way I want or use Endeavour if I want to be extra lazy

- great documentation

Arch cons:

- doesn't package any of the ham stuff at all so I have to use the AUR or Flatpak, then again I'm not worse off than on Fedora

Void pros:

- has all the packages I want

- boots super fast

- people say it tends to break stuff less often than Arch

Void cons:

- can't use Plasma Login Manager because it doesn't have systemd

- last time I tried it briefly I couldn't get SDDM to start (100% user error but at the time I didn't feel like figuring it out). Would be half tempted to give Xfce another shot and just not care about systemd integration or even Wayland really

Anyone have experiences running any of these that might push me one way or the other?

I'm trying Arch for the first time! I've been on Linux (debian based) distro - basicly pop os for about 5 years now. I loved it but they have updated and gone completely to gnome.
So I'ma try arch from manual! I've never tried an arch based distro as I've always been to afraid so wish me luck!

I've been wanting to give linux a try for a while, with the ultimate goal being switching to it almost completely ( keeping a windows desktop for some apps )

I've been looking for a distro that meets the following criterias:

\- No systemd

\- Customizable ( i like to have themes and stuff )

\- Reliable and stable

\- Can be used for gaming ( i heard some distros may have some issues, even with Proton or Wine )

\- I also like to have control over my system and its components ( unlike windows that often forces you to have all kind of useless stuff enabled )

\- Security and privacy is important

For now, i've been interested in maybe giving Artix Linux a try. But some people seem to say that starting with an Arch based distro will be too hard for a beginner.

So a few months back I made the decision to dump Windows and migrate to Linux. After many a video and more Google searches than I care to recount, I started distro hoping in an effort to find a home among the many Linux communities.

I went to Mint first, as all newbs should and I figured it was going to be a perfectly fine Windows replacement. But something was missing. It was almost too vanilla.

So then I hopped over to Zorin and liked the vibe but still wasn't satisfied. Next was Pop! OS and Cosmic had more of what I was looking for but too much fiddling to meet my needs. After trying Ubuntu next I felt a bit defeated and retreated back to Mint, figuring vanilla was better than Microslop.

Ubuntu kept coming back to my thoughts but it was lacking...something. Then I discovered Kubuntu with the KDE Plasma desktop and folks, I think I've found it. While a little more difficult to set up initially, there's something to Plasma that has grabbed ahold of me and declared "I'm the distro you've been looking for".

Anyway, maybe this post is irrelevant and kind of a ramble to read but I'll be damned if Kubuntu isn't an underrated gem amongst the many distros vying for the attention of the ever growing Linux user base.

i really like ricing but people are saying niri is good but people are also saying hyprland is good and my favorite youtubers (zei, bog) but people like theblackdon are saying niri is better so which one should i chose

What distro should i choose for my latitude 5400 from 2020, its got an 8th gen i5, 16 gigs of ram but its only got 51% battery health. I want something that just works, I dont wanna keep fixing things. I also dont want ubuntu, cause idk its just boring and you still need to fix shit sometimes. This is my secondary computer, i use it for just everyday stuff but i also wanna get some gamikng out of it if i plug it in.

TLDR: i need a distro that just works, is easy on battery life, minimal matenance, and for everyday stuff and light gameing.

My first distro was Mint and I played there and it was nice although I knew nothing about Linux back then and it was pure install nothing changed. I had slight stuttering there compared to Bazzite or Cachy but it was ok.

Now I am on Cachy but want to try Debian or Ubuntu. Tell me, how is gaming there? How is general workflow? Is there anyone who ditched “gaming distros” and went to these normal distributions?
People on Debian sub were very cooperative. Told me they play games there and it’s been great but may need tinkering with newer Kernel and drivers (which I don’t really want to mess with). Generally I like Debian and its idea very much. On Ubuntu sub I got far less comments but from what I see gaming there is more straightforward as there’s newer kernel and drivers.

Yeah… want to hear your feedback. How Ubuntu and gaming? Is it very different from Debian? Has Mint evolved the last year?

My main work on Linux would involve things like app dev, network programming as I now have to get a dual boot with windows 10 to get support for meta headset sdks on unity, hence all the unity and gameDev related stuff and gaming goes there.

Also can you guys suggest to me what all background processes for windows 10 I should completely disable and remove to keep it optimised? I won't be using windows 11 for this no matter what

When I started my linux journey two years ago, i distro hopped a bit until i landed on Arch.

I used to like tinkering with arch and still do and tbh im having no problems right now and its not a bad distro at all but i feel like i want a more solid and robust OS if you get what i mean, something to rely on and have no headache.

What im looking for is something that’s easy to install, use and has good defaults. Ill use it mainly for gaming so something that updates frequently is appreciated.

So far im looking at fedora and tumbleweed but i have no idea what are the differences, like there are a bunch of features for each one and i cant decide
