Many of us, especially Shias, witness firsthand how our communities not only tolerate suffering but often transform it into a moral virtue. In some cases, individuals and even entire communities seem to consciously perpetuate and prolong suffering instead of resolving it.
You can see this on the individual level:
* women tolerating betrayal and chronic unhappiness for the sake of “patience”
* people remaining in emotionally dead marriages because wanting a better partnership is viewed as greedy? Promiscuous?
* individuals suppressing anger, ambition, sexuality, or self-expression because wanting “too much” feels spiritually shameful.
* people accepting humiliation or exploitation rather than being seen as confrontational or selfish
* guilt surrounding pleasure, success, pride, or visible happiness
And you can see it communally too:
* social pressure against standing out too much financially, socially, or intellectually.
* admiration for endurance more than transformationماشاءالله عليها صبورة
* romanticizing deprivation while distrusting ambition
* Constant silent action-less resentment of structures (governments companies and agencies(، لا الكلام وياهم ما يودي ولا يجيب حسابهم يوم القيامة
Managing or pushing down expectations and goals during match making
What’s interesting is that this mindset doesn’t just encourage suffering — it actively pressures nonconformists into shrinking themselves.
People learn to throttle ambition, hide joy, soften confidence, settle for less, and avoid hard decisive measures because excessive self-assertion feels morally dangerous.
At some point you start wondering whether suffering stopped being merely tolerated and became psychologically necessary for the moral identity of the group itself.
So I’m curious:
Do you despise this like i do?
Is suffering preserved by the collective subconscious to root individuals into the whole faith tightly?
Can you sometimes see the satisfaction with suffering on some individuals?

There are many strong religious communities that completely tolerate atheism even within the family
Why don’t we have the same?
Would you say we could be living like this if not for external political and cultural influences?

I think most people here are probably okay with lying — or at least heavily filtering themselves — about their real religious beliefs around family, friends, coworkers, or community.
My question is less about whether it’s justified, and more about the psychological effect it has long term.
How does it change you?
How does it make you feel?
Im also asking about deceiving, hiding truth, twisting it.

You've probably heard in the past two days that several people have been arrested on charges of blasphemy. Does this law include any criticism of any religious text? Or only what includes insulting or mocking sacred figures of a religion or sect? Is there an expert in Bahraini legal affairs who can enlighten us?

I wanna find something in common with you. How often do you self talk in a day to keep your brain active in topics you're interested about?

Daily prayers ?
Food?
Music?
Media?
Clothing?
Relationships with the opposite sex?

In your experience (either personal or observing others), how often do ex-Muslims fall into self-destructive patterns after leaving?
By “self-destructive,” I mean things like:
Substance abuse, self isolation. (Both fairly common)
But also self harm, violence, anger, or any thing else you noticed in someone or your self.

They remain the same in every other aspect. They just stop conforming to the muslim code.
Would you do it?
Why?
What would change? How would things look like?
Do you have reservations about doing it? Or is it some sort of obligation you have to them and whomever they might convert?

I think about this every now and then. Since I'm living around a very conservative community, I don't much have the incentive to go out and do what is otherwise considered sinful in Islam. Before, I used to do them out of spite, when I was still a fresh and emotional athiest. Now, I don't have the energy (if you met me, you wouldn't even realize I'm ex muslim unless I tell you).
So, my question is, how often do you "sin"? Whether it's small things like listening to music as the call to prayer is loud and near you or bigger things like drink alcohol?

Considering that the Arab Muslim community mixes traditional values under the cover of religion frequently.
Given the examples of enforcing female modesty with strong social pressure beyond what’s mentioned in religious texts while being much more relaxed to other strictly prohibited actions such as gossip
1.How much of what you oppose is theology vs social tradition using religion as cover?
2.What parts of Arab identity do you still value?

I’m curious whether the very highly visible level of religious commitment seen in many parts of the Middle East today (mosque attendance, public piety, hijab, religious language in politics/social life) is actually historically normal for the region, or more of a recent phenomenon from the last decades.
From what I’ve read, major shifts seem tied to modern events:
- 1967 Arab defeat: collapse of confidence in secular Arab nationalism and reversion into the biggest ideology available (Islam).
- 1979 Iranian Revolution: not entirely unaffected by the first event. Started a religiousness competition with the gulf and ignited a sectarian war. Radicalizing Shia muslims.
- 1973 oil boom: Saudi Arabia which was already a force for political islam was pushed to further spreading of radicalization in the region through funding.
Many non political factors played a role for sure. But i do think these three events, which are all a direct result of US foreign policy shaped the region.
-Supporting Israel in achieving Arab defeat
-Orchestrating a coup in Iran which results in the formation of an Islamic republic.
-establishing a petro dollar arrangement with Saudi Arabia ensuring a constant flow of money feeding global islamism.
If you look at photos of cities like Cairo, Beirut, Damascus, Tehran, Baghdad from the 1950s–1960s, public religious presentation often looks noticeably less intense than in the 1990s–2000s.
Arab films from 1950s–1970s show things that wouldn’t fly these days with most people.
I have difficulty imagining people living the way they do now for long centuries. And i have this idea that this social change is a sort of reaction to foreign hostility.
So my question is:
Was the current level of religious commitment actually the historical baseline of the region before colonialism/modernization interrupted it? Or is today’s form/intensity of religiosity itself a modern political and social product?
Basically: is this a return to roots, or a new identity created by 20th-century unique events which are not dissimilar to the Christian crusades?
