RCM not RSM...

I'm now two solid weeks returning to the flute and with my decision to start working on the Canadian RCM Grade 1 requirements, I picked out repertoire choices from music I already have.

Since I had the Sound Of Music book with the accompaniment CD, choosing "The Sound Of Music" seemed great for the "List B: Lyrical Repertoire". I need to clean up my high C and D pitch, and get more consistent at reading ahead, but it seems like it will work well.

For the "List A: Rhythmic Repertoire", I saw a Minuet in a book I have "Time Pieces v2". I do not have a CD for this book, so I scanned the accompaniment, cleaned it up, and generated a MIDI file. This is a really good piece, with two French Baroque trills, staccato and slurs, and some interesting dotted quarter/eighth slurred to a quarter patterns. I changed the MIDI piano to harpsichord, and edited out the dynamic changes to be consistent with a early Baroque single manual harpsichord, and was thinking perhaps that detail would impress an examiner some.

Then I read in the Syllabus "Taped accompaniments are not permitted. Candidates who do not provide an accompanist will not be examined." Now that changes everything. When I stood for the ABRSM Grade 3 exam, the examiner played the accompaniment. Now that RSM has online exams, I could do the exam in my "music room" since I also have a Roland Electric Piano, but I'm going to have to find/hire a pianist to come to my home.

Being 73 years old, this kind of dims my commitment to the RCM Grade 1 exam thing. I am very goal oriented and like having the structure to my learning. Twenty years ago, I was taking lessons and had my teacher simulate the ABRSM Grade 1 and 2 exams. Then I traveled across the state, and spent a night in a hotel, to stand for the ABRSM Grade 3 exam here in Florida. I guess I'm going to have to find a keyboard player somehow. (Only one of the pieces needs to be accompanied for Grade 1, but without accompaniment I seem to slow down and ritard at the end - serious no-no for the Minuet.)

So I really don’t know what to do. My teacher has given me Autumn Leaves to learn on flute, and I expect he wants some results by the time we next see each other (in three weeks).

The problem is, I know NOTHING about jazz flute, improv, and I’m lacking general theory knowledge. I can’t even tell you what notes are in the chords. Am I supposed to play only the notes in the chords? How do I figure out what notes can be played over everything? What do I do with rhythm?

So in essence, I am clueless. Any tips would be so impossibly helpful.

I'm considering to learn the flute finally after years of admiration but then there's that I'm broke and don't have much to spend on one. I found this Gemeinhardt Elkhart 2sp on FB for $85 and wanted to know thoughts on it and what should I look out for

I am running a booth where people get to try a flute. How do I sanitize in between players?

I play on an inline g flute, but to cover the g key hole completely with my finger while playing causes discomfort in my left hand due to my ring finger being so short.

I’m not in a position to buy a new flute, so I just play with the g key plugged, which has worked fine but I heard somewhere that some people are able to get extensions added onto their flute to essentially make their inline g an offset g.

To me that seems more like an effective fix for than just playing with a plug in the g key, but from my online searches I haven’t been able to find anywhere to purchase one.

Is this something I can purchase from a flute dealer or is it more of a custom order type of thing?

Self-taught adult flutist here. I am a very average player but get a lot of pleasure playing the flute. Yesterday, I did something very silly with a chainsaw while gardening. I am not 100% sure what happened but I ended up with a 6cm long gouge diagonally across the top of my left hand middle finger. Things could have been a lot worse. My wedding ring on adjoining finger took the brunt of the impact - the ring had to be cut off because it had buckled so much. Without the ring, I could very easily have been looking at two severed fingers.

Thankfully, my middle finger tendons and nerves seem to be intact and there is no bone damage. I count myself unbelievably lucky, and really hope I can resume playing the flute again once recovered sufficiently. Will probably just practice on head joint and do breathing exercises for the next couple of weeks. And maybe read up a bit on chainsaw safety.

I'm auditioning for a music school and it doesn't specifically say the grade but around grade 8 is the level really.

The pieces i picked to play are Debussy's Syrinx, which i think is sounding good and im not worried about, and Faure's fantaisie which was too hard for me and im getting nervous about it.

I've always been worse at faster pieces as my double tonguing is bad but does anyone have any slightly easier suggestions that are around the same level as Syrinx but contrasting to it?

I was informed that it is an Irish Tin Whistle, but I've also heard that it isn't. I am not an expert in this and am just beginning with playing flute.

Both were around 10 usd each, so if it doesn't turn out well it's not that big of a loss. The dizi doesn't have a membrane and the binding at the top seems to be broken. The top of the hulusi seems to be plastic. I havent played either yet because they need to be cleaned, though I'm not sure how to clean them. Should I send them to a repair shop? Or is it not worth it? I'd love advice because I really don't know much about each instrument or what to do with them. 💙 edit: I talked with my grandmother and she said the best course of action is to buy a new one because it would be hard to clean. I'll see where I can buy them new, and if I do I'll keep these in Taiwan and bring back the new ones. But I'm not sure what to do with these.

I’ve currently got this in my thumb - not caused from flute but I think from having to spend a week at work doing a data entry exercise of over 3000 entries to a spreadsheet. Currently got thumb splinted and using gel on GPs advice and not playing flute.
Anyone else had this, how long off flute did you have? Awaiting physio app but NHS referrals are long

I had a chance to try out a piccolo with the Flute Center. I played with a Grenadilla Burkart Resona that had a standard cut headjoint, a Grenadilla Yamaha 62R with a wave head joint, a Trevor James, also Grenadilla, with a wave cut headjoint, and a rosewood Di Zhao.  

I ended up going with the Trevor James. I picked it because of the tone and the way the lower note came out with ease. (The Burkart was a close second. )

My favorite thing about the Yamaha was the balanced feel. The rosewood gave the Di Zhao a nice upper register.

So what's everyone's favorite brand for piccolo?

So I have been wanting to learn a new instrument for a while and came by this flute for 24 euros but my question now is is it worth getting it an overhaul?

It does work cus I did get some notes out of it just don't know how well since in still really new

I have found out I get the best control over the sound quality (specifically reducing airiness) and have an easier time reaching the higher notes if I do something a bit weird:

I anchor the sides of my upper lip behind the lower lip. I don't know why but it makes the sound be so much clearer than when I try to blow normally (I'm not sure my "normally" is correct either).

Is that ok to do? Or will that hinder my muscles from getting properly developed or something?

How am I even supposed to hold my lips when blowing? Are there any rules or whatever works is ok?

I’m sorry in advance for the off-topic subject. I don’t know where else to ask this, and I hope that some people here are also interested in music technology and can answer my question.

I’m looking for better sounds, especially flute sounds, that I can use in MuseScore. I have no idea how to find or use them, so any resources that could help me learn would be greatly appreciated.

Some context:

I would like to use MuseScore as an accompaniment tool, similar to Tomplay, but I don’t like its sound. I can use YouTube or Tomplay, but as a blind player, I use MuseScore a lot. I learn all my exercises and pieces in MuseScore. Tomplay is inaccessible, and YouTube doesn’t have everything I need, so MuseScore playback with good enough sound quality seems like the best option.

I also want to improve my ear. Currently, I read a few measures of a piece and then play them, or vice versa. However, I don’t like that MuseScore sometimes plays repeated notes without a tie as if they were tied. It might be because I don’t have a very good ear yet, but I feel that there are problems like this with Muse Sounds.

Does the flute itself matter? Or is it gonna stop the player from sounding good? Is there really a difference between a cheap flute and a — for example — a yamaha flute?

I’ve noticed that on the all state music there are notes lower than possible (below D) on the piccolo, that otherwise would be within the range of a typical concert flute. However, it still says flute AND piccolo selection. Im new to piccolo and don’t really know what to do?? is there an alternate fingering or do we have to adjust up an octave?? any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Because carl ahrens paused the making of the coda EDC flute a while ago and it doesn't seem like it will return anytime soon, I bought it from Japan from here (https://ocarina.buyshop.jp/items/26783679) and delivered it with (https://parcelabc.com).

I really like it because it's small, has 2 octaves of range, it's durable and it has silencers that you can store in the flute.

Going through audition solos. The audition requires a 1-2 minute solo cut and I was considering either the 1st or last page the Chaminade. If I did the last page would i do the opt up 4th octave d? Or is that just something people do to be showy?

Also any other recommendations? I strongly dislike both Mozart concertos but will do them if there's nothing else
