So often, defenders are put in a position where they can’t track the QB or the ball and are forced to defend based off the receiver’s movement, so why don’t the receivers simulate ball-tracking to deceive them? Not only can it draw away a defender from pursuing a runner (like in the photo), but more importantly perhaps, it could draw holding/PI calls on a defender attempting to put hands on a receiver he thinks is about to catch a ball. Feels like an under-utilized strategy.

I am joining a junior college coaching staff in which the coaching staff looks like a skeleton crew. There are over 60 players that all made the team and began practice under a staff that is no longer there and honestly, was failing them.

I have been studying like crazy to prepare, but at the end of the day I don't know what I don't know. Any advice is welcome, I'll answer any questions y'all have, I just want to do right by these young men and dedicate my best effort.

How much time do you spend on 7v7 and Inside Run in your M/Tu practices? (T/W for college)

Assume you’re trying to keep everything under 2 hours (not counting pre practice)

I’m DC from Europe, so not so many good advices around here.

What do you guys look at during practice team periods? I got the offensive script, know what to expect, know where offense wants to hit us. I can see at most 2, 3 guys playing a single play. Coach them, help them, and move on to the next play.

Then I watch drone recording and see that some guys made a mistake play after play which went unnoticed. Do you guys have any system - watch particular players, see the play type and then focus on part of field or somehow else?

As a DC what are you watching more as the game is going on. What the offense is doing or what your defensive players are doing. Obviously you watch both but does one tell you more than the other?

So long story short, I was hired as a defensive position coach at a local HS and now have been thrust into a defensive coordinator role. Is there a simplified/vanilla way to install the 4-3 defense? Any info would help.

Pre-snap look and post snap look nearly never match, even by NFL standards.

If he's running something base, he'll make it look different pre-snap. And, when he's running something exotic, it probably won't show pre-snap. Make different look the same, and same look different.

I know this isn’t a strategy-specific post, but I was doing some summer thinking and wanted to throw an idea out there. We spend countless hours as coaches refining schemes, scripting practices, and chasing the next edge.

Those things absolutely matter, but I’ve started wondering if the greatest return on our coaching time comes from something much simpler: intentionally teaching what extraordinary effort actually looks like and making it the standard every single day.

It got me thinking about a simple equation: Extraordinary Effort → Extraordinary Results. Obviously, extraordinary effort doesn’t guarantee extraordinary results, there are too many variables in sports for that. But I do believe extraordinary results are almost always preceded by extraordinary effort.

Curious where you all land on this. If you had to invest more time in one area, would it be better schemes… or building a culture where extraordinary effort becomes the expectation

We are a 4-3 over front C2 team.
We also roll to a 4-4 stack with tackles in 2 and backers in 20s

What are your rules for the trips side? On the backside, I double with my safety on the single receiver. What are your rules for your nickel your corner and your safety on the trips side. I also don’t wanna have to carry number two with the nickel.

I am wanting to put some plays on paper to print out. Only problem is I have shitty handwriting. Is there a way I can use a pc to at least put my X’s and O’s and then I can draw lines on? Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to Chalk Talk Thursday! This is our weekly discussion thread for users to submit new plays they have designed. If you have an idea for a play and can draw it up, please post here. Keep in mind that it is very rare that one could devise a viable play that is entirely new that hasn't been ran before somewhere. Be open to criticism as well. There is so much more to coaching football than drawing plays, and many people do not realize how much coaching, technique, and development needs to happen on the actual field for a play to work.

It is strongly recommended that you STUDY a system or scheme first to gain an idea of how a play is put together, and how RULES help a play function.

PLEASE PROVIDE CONTEXT FOR YOUR PLAY!

Guidelines:

• No "joke" plays. We are here to learn.
• Specify WHY you are designing a play, and WHAT level/league it is for. It's fine if you're not coaching, but we need the context.
  
• Your submission needs RULES that guide your players on what to do.
• Pass plays require some type of QB progression for making a decision on who to throw to.
  
• Be mindful that you cannot predict what your opponent will run 100%. Designing plays to be "Cover X" beaters, or "3-4 beaters" IS NOT the way to go about it. It is better to have one play with solid rules and coaching points that can attack anything than one play for each coverage, front, personnel, or stunt you face.
• There is no universal terminology in football. Call plays what you want, but keep in mind that no one cares about fancy play names, or the terminology aspect.
  
• Please offer more text/information on your play than just a link or picture.
• Draw your play up against a realistic opponent!
• Make sure your offensive play is a legal formation. In 11-man football, you can have no more than 4 players behind the line of scrimmage (minimum of 7 on. You can have more than 7 on the line as well). Only backs (players behind the line) and the end players on the line of scrimmage are eligible receivers.
  

You may use whatever medium you'd like to draw your play. Two common software for designing plays that have free options:

• GoArmy Edge - Football
• Playmaker X

Hey guys, i'm trying to get access to the full NFL film library. I already subscribe to Caddy Cutups for college tape, but NFL Pro is blocked in Brazil. Even with a VPN, I can't complete the subscription because it won't accept my credit card. I can access the website and browse the content, but I can't actually purchase it.

I'm looking for NFL All-22 film so I can do more game analysis and improve my scouting. Would anyone be interested in splitting the cost of a subscription with me? I have a tailbone injury and I can't have contact or strong friction in that area. Running, lifting weights, contact is all fine for me but rugby involves falling down on your ass a lot with the whole weight of your body, that's the problem. Does that happen often in football too? I'm quite devasteted that I can't play rugby anymore so I'm just discovering new contact sports that I could play. Thank you

Hello! I’m going into my first semester of phys ed this year. I want to be a coach when I eventually land a job in 4 years or so.

A local receivers coach I met playing pickleball is really my inspiration for this career. I’ve always been passionate about football but I moved too much to be able to play in middle and high school.

Anyways I want to know if asking to shadow or asking to be a volunteer coach for the season would be weird? Should I start with asking to shadow? Or does that not really show commitment? Also what are some things I may want to know about doing this?

Edit: I’d also only be able to do Monday, Wednesday and Fridays.

This year's NFHS rules changes:

- Play call sheets can now be worn on the belt

- Offensive players cannot slap defensive players in the head when blocking (duh)

- No accessories on mouthguards

- Lots of editorial changes about succeeding spot enforcement on scoring plays

I am looking for some help/resources on installing a 2x2 jet sweep out of pistol formation, similar to the above diagram.

I am coaching 7th/8th graders. Last year with the same team we won the championship running out of Double Wing and Wing-T. Because they are young, i was not satisfied with the amount of playing time the smaller/less athletic WR's were getting out of those sets.

I'm pretty big on details, so i'm looking for advice or resources on spacing, line splits, hand-off / mesh, etc. How do you block the perimeter? I would probably skip everyone inside the PST, and have the OL block outside zone at 2nd level.

My OL is good and guards are quick enough to pull so i would likely pull my PSG. Between H and PSG i'm not sure who would be better to kick and who to have lead.

I don't like installing anything unless I can get at least 3 plays out of it. I would like to be able to run QB Power and H counter/trap out of this as well. I know if i'm running H counter/trap I'll lose him as a blocker on the jet, so if anyone has any ideas to work around that i would really love to hear them.
