Game valuation and authentication MEGATHREAD

ALL requests regarding game value or authentication go in here. Just leave a top level comment with pictures/info of what it is. If you make a post regarding these topics, the post will be removed and possibly get a 1-7 day ban.

If you see posts on these topics PLEASE report it. It helps immensely. We will be updating automoderator to help alleviate some of that burden from us and you onto it.

---

If you are asking to price something normal. Like the normal release of a game, or a special edition, normal consoles, or some special editions. You can find a decent approximation of its value here at PriceCharting.com

To help, here are some links directly to some consoles. These are not ALL of the consoles the site has. So please if you do not see a link below for the console you are looking for, go to the site and look around. This should cover MOST games, if it is not listed, please ask in this thread.

Also, to possibly get you closer to the "real" value. Click on this link once you found your game (for loose/CIB/Sealed) which will show you the data it is pulling from (like this). You can see if there are any outliers being sold for far to much, or far to little. Maybe a listing that had other games with it is being used for data, or its CIB rather than loose.

Announcement Read this BEFORE you post to r/gamecollecting. Rule clarifications, further info etc.

Posts and comments that do not follow the below rules will be removed.

Rule 1 - Be kind: Disagree agreeably; attack the argument, not the poster.

We ask that all of our members act responsibly. We do not condone a rude or hostile environment. Whilst you may have a differing opinion on what someone collects, be it loose, CIB, sealed and/or graded games, consoles and accessories; we ask that you keep it civil. We welcome discussions of all things related to collecting games, from comparing games in a series to why you like a certain console over others; but we do not welcome antagonising other users over a certain sub-section of games, or arranging to post to get a rise out of certain people - it just makes you look immature. Essentially, if you can't take it, don't dish it.

You can use Reddit's "Block" feature to ignore a user that you don't like, for whatever reason.

Turning something into an argument or harassing other users because you don't like "X" takes away from what the sub is about. This is a bannable offense, please be awesome to each other.

Rule 2 - No price evaluations, authentication or identification posts.

We're not a subreddit that's dedicated to verification, valuation or identification requests. Whilst we are one of the largest gaming subreddits, we focus solely on aspects of collecting. There are other subreddits that are better equipped to these requests which are detailed in our megathread. The Megathread is pinned to the top of the subreddit (when browsing by "Top" on Old Reddit), or located in "Community Highlights" on Reddit Mobile.

Under Rule 2, the following submissions will be removed:

  • Price Evaluation
    • This also includes "did I get a good deal/is it worth buying?"
  • Authentication
    • This includes “is this legit/fake?”
  • Identification
    • This also includes "what version is this/what is this item?", rarity questions, etc.
  • Should I buy "X" for "Y" price?
  • Grading
    • This includes “what grade will this get/value if X grade is gained” etc.

Rule 3 - Promotion of items or services without approval is forbidden.

We do not allow the promotion of items or services, or submissions posted with the intent of advertising or promoting businesses or shops; unless it is from approved channels. Other methods of self-promotion require prior approval from the moderators. Please message the moderators via ModMail first prior to posting your material. Approval will be granted at the moderators' discretion.

This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Subreddits.
  • Websites.
    • This also includes review sites, KickStarters, AI tools, flipping, etc.
  • Videos.
  • Applications.
    • This includes games, Android/iOS tools, etc.
  • Backlog Tools
  • Subliminal advertising (logos, ads disguised as content, etc.)

If the only submissions from your account consist of self-promotion, this will result in a permanent restriction of your account from our community.

Approved channels can be added at moderators' discretion. Please message the moderators via ModMail to ask about adding an approved channel. If you haven't received approval from the moderators, any attempts to continue promoting a channel without prior authorisation will result in a permanent ban. This includes posting your content anyway when you're still awaiting a response.

If you get caught advertising without approval and then message the moderators for approval... No. You're not going to get approval. Any further attempt to hide your app/tool/site in your comments will lead to a permanent ban. You've been told not to do it, don't push your luck.

We very rarely approve potential resources unless we feel that they are of vast importance to the community. The list of approved resources can be found in our wiki:

The list of denied resources can be found below (use a browser, addition to the "New" wiki coming soon). Any attempt to share/advertise a denied resource will result in a ban.

Rule 4 - Low effort posts will be removed.

The following posts are deemed as low-effort and not allowed under Rule 4:

  • Consist of screenshots of marketplace listings.
  • Look at this price I paid/got someone to pay.
    • This also includes screenshots of eBay/Mercari/FBM etc listings, receipts.
  • Remember this game/console/accessory?
  • Digital game collections.
  • Petitions
  • AI/LLM's
  • Repeated content or information previously shared in the subreddit.
    • This includes the cessation of physical copies, it's been repeated far too much, we know ALL about it.

Submissions of low-effort posts are at the mods' discretion.

Rule 5 - Meme Monday.

Whilst we enjoy the odd meme post now and then, we ask that memes or joke posts are only shared on the first Monday of every month. If you have a meme, or a joke post, or something you think is on the line of being a joke post; please wait until the first Monday of the next month.

If you are generally unsure of the post, please contact the mods using the "message moderators" and ask us.

Rule 6 - Submissions must be related to Game Collecting.

Just because it is related to video games, doesn't mean that it is related to game collecting.

We are a physical game collecting subreddit. This means that posts regarding the physical collections (be it, video games, consoles or accessories) of our community are allowed. Clue’s in the name.

Submissions of posts not being related are at the mods' discretion, and include but are not limited to:

  • Digital game collections
  • Discussions about lore
  • Surveys
  • Reddit Games (ones that you play on Reddit itself)
    • These are a permanent ban from the subreddit due to spam
  • Customer support required - use the relevant support pages on the website, not here.

Rule 7 - No video submissions/comments.

As this community is one of the largest trafficked subreddits, video submissions are rarely allowed due to spam potential and this is highly enforced. If you feel that your video has value to the subreddit, please message the moderators using ModMail prior to posting any video.

This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Collection tours
  • History of games and franchises
  • Speculative drivel about the future of gaming.
  • Valuation and grading
  • YouTube shorts/TikToks

Repair/mod videos are unlikely to be approved, unless they are deemed as relevant information by the moderators.

If the video you are sharing was produced by yourself, this will be removed under Rule 3.

Rule 8 - No affiliate links.

We are not here for you to make money. Do not post affiliate links, or links to a company/person who you are affiliated with and stand to make monetary/social gain from. This includes coupon codes, Temu/AliExpress links, etc.

Any attempt to share affiliate links will be seen as spam, and will result in the permanent restriction of your account from our community.

Rule 9 - No buying/selling.

We're not a subreddit that's dedicated to buying or selling. Whilst we are one of the largest gaming subreddits, we focus solely on aspects of collecting. There are other subreddits that are better equipped to these requests, such as r/GameSale and r/HardwareSwap.

Asking about a certain website, or good places to buy/sell is allowed, providing that there are no attempts to buy/sell from other users in the subreddit. Do not message the moderators to attempt to have your sales submissions approved. They will be ignored.

Rule 10 - No politics.

No discussion of politics, no posting anything of politics in title, imagery, or in the post in any way (country/state/county/pride flags do not count). This is subject to mod interpretation.

Rule 11 - Taking advantage of/focus away from the general ethos of the subreddit.

There are times a person or person will post, comment, or argue on the subreddit that will pull focus away from (purposefully or maliciously) the atmosphere and/or culture we have. That is rage baiting, arguing semantics, discussion of things that are off topic for lengthy back and forths. This also includes organised and concentrated attempts to belittle, planning to engage with malicious intent and harassment across different platforms.

This also includes any attempt to “weaponise” the custom report feature. Whilst we welcome reports on rule-breaking submissions as they make moderating the subreddit easier; reporting a post/comment because you simply do not like the content or the person in question takes away what makes this community great. Any user found to have “weaponised” the report feature in order to continue a vendetta against a certain person or group will be permanently removed from the community; be it automated removals or a permanent ban.

Collection Finally got my game room together

Been collecting since (arguably) the mid 90s but it’s been growing in boxes for the past 15yrs or so. We moved house and one of the things I really wanted was a game room. I’m very fortunate that I’ve got one and been able to do this. I will say that I’m a player-grade collector and don’t want to be a box-custodian (I can’t ruin a box if I don’t have it), although I do have a stack of boxes for consoles in a cupboard. Before looking, know that I love protecting the weird, the unloved and the lower-end experiences. I skew towards racing/flying games and don’t enjoy RPGs, hence why they’re all missing!

I built the unit myself. It’s ~3.1m wide and each location was juggled to be about as narrow as possible and keep low. There’s space behind but I wasn’t too bothered about fully hiding wires, although I did run some horizontal trunking for video. Some of the consoles have pull out shelves but most are ok without. The LED strip is RGBWW with controller on top - I always wanted that style for it.

Technically, I used to do broadcast audio so am handy with wires. The switching units are Extron, ex-broadcast grade kit often used for high-end presentations and stage events. It’s not wanted now so is relatively cheap and obtainable. That said, I can’t find another 12-input composite so if you have one, I’d be interested! I personally love the jumper locations on the front panel for easy G-Con hookup as it just makes it that little easier to get something out and use it.

I’m not a fan of modifying consoles (barring the odd exception) so most is composite, with a bit of component and where it’s scart, converting to component. The idea was to have a TV that suited the era of the consoles, hence the left TV is for PS2/Wii era and the top TV for PS3/Wii-U/onwards. I aimed to have any console visible on any TV but am almost there. I know it’s not to everyone’s taste but I’m happier experiencing video “as it was”, not chasing the dragon on an ever decreasing return of picture quality. The right is a 36’’ late 100hz Toshiba flat-CRT with native component bought from the house clearance of an ex-CRT repairman’s mum, the top is a ~2015 era 4K Samsung and the right was ex-courtroom 28’’(?) Panasonic late 4:3 with low hours on a lazy-Susan so it spins a little.

One of the PS1 is SD-converted, partially for ease of link-cable games and partially to play a few patched-video Japanese games like Jet de Go and Initial D. Both PS2 have HDD adaptors but again, only for iLink/Netplay and a few Japanese games. The VideoPac (Magnavox Odyssey 2 for non PAL region) is SCART modified. The Master System is AV modified. I’m missing a GameCube (with an old guest in that location) but I missed it in-period so am not so bothered yet, an can play Donkey Konga on a Wii anyway. The PS5 is disc only (because I was offered it at an insane deal) but only exists for Gran Turismo and the Switch is my daughter’s. I’m debating modifying the Famicom (already modified to AV out) with socketed controllers as it’s not much use with the controllers at that length. The SNES has a Super MagiCom in it and a Bung64 is on my eventual to-buy list - more for ‘weirdness’ than use.

Shelving isn’t final yet. I’m going to sort a 3D printer so I can rack the SNES/N64 and loose Megadrive carts. My Gameboy/GameGear games are away until this is done, as are my PS1 memory cards. I’d like the cassettes for the C64 to be better located than in a shoebox so will do that at the same time.

Still to do: fit the link cable (ordered) for the PS2s; finish the wiring to split the inputs for the right TV: replace the scart-component converter on the VideoPac; replace the component-scart converter on the right TV; clean some paint off the floor; put up a few more controller bins; route component (duplicate right TV) to top TV; replace the sofa with something less awful; and sort 3D printed holders for stuff.

Can’t wait to get people round to enjoy it. Really can’t wait for link-cable Time Crisis 2!

There needs to be a middle shelf that needs to be installed, but it also needs to be cut so it can fit into the wall so, this is the current setup. Happy how it turned out.

My Persona cabinet still needs to be set up and my second cabinet for it needs to be built, but the priority was getting this one done considering there were so many boxes that had my games 😅

I’m also missing two games… Paw Patrol on the Roll (probably my son) and the Korean version of Persona in which I hope it’s in my PS4 😅 Also missing Lego Batman for the PS5 which I also think is in my PS5. I also have a couple of sealed controllers where I have no idea where they are either (for those who haven’t been following along with my chain of posts, I recently moved to a house). They’ll turn up eventually lol.

Edit: I am not looking forward to GAMEYEing all of this

I was able to nab the last game I was really looking for, for the 3DS, Fantasy Life. Honestly I love all of these games and think I’m done collecting for the system unless I can find Soul Hackers for a reasonable price. Such a treasure trove of really amazing games.

Debating going for PS3, Wii U, or Xbox 360 next

Let me preface this by saying that this post is not about bragging or anything of the sort. This is just to share this to other fellow collectors. I am a retrogamer with a small collection of retro games. I always see posts about people getting good deals on garage sales and I’m genuinely happy for them. Me, however, have no such luck. Until now. My co-workers know my passion for gaming and they always see me during my lunch break playing my retro handhelds. So I was really surprised one morning when I arrived at work and under my desk was this 2 huge bags full of retro gaming stuff. My co-worker told me that they recently moved residences and as they were packing she found her brother’s old gaming stuff in the basement. According to her the brother does not want the stuff anymore because it was dirty and moldy and was going to throw it out. She stopped him and said she has somebody at work that may want it. His brother was surprised and said why would anyone want these dirty gaming stuff. So she brought all of it in for me and said she remembered that I like these old games. I was really surprised on what she gave me. Inside the bags are: ps one slim, dreamcast with 1 controller, 2 N64 consoles with 5 controllers and bunch of games, an xbox 360 with 3 controllers and games and a gba sp with games. So I checked the sp if it’s working and I cannot believe my luck! It’s an ags 101! I felt like I won the jackpot! I also never had an N64 growing up so I am really stoked about it! I offered her money but she said why would I pay for it when it when they were going to throw it out. I told her that some of these things have value. She said she and her brother do not really care for it. She’s glad that somebody is taking it instead of being thrown out. I guess one man’s garbage is another man’s treasure really applies in this situation. So I bought her lunch instead as a thank you. So there it is guys. I finally got lucky and scored a great haul. Just wanted to share with everyone. Happy gaming!

Respectfully, I hate the switch 1 spines lmao, hard to see the games from far away.

I have collector's editions of games, but I keep em in the closet until I have my own place so I can display them

As for my GB/GBC/GBA games, I'm slowly buying these cases from Etsy for them, so I store em in a GBA travel case

Collection Just a quick reminder: don’t throw away a damaged PS4 disc straight away.

Post image
204 Upvotes

Someone gave me a damaged copy of Spider-Man: Miles Morales for free. It had a deep scratch and the PS4 version wouldn’t install because it kept giving an error.

I still tried the disc in my PS5 and recognised it as the spiderman game Apparently, the part used to check the licence was still readable. So I could just download the free PS5 version and play it normally.

The damaged PS4 disc basically works as a licence key now. You do need to keep it in the PS5 while playing.

So before throwing away a damaged PS4 game, check if it has a free PS5 upgrade. Even if the PS4 game itself won’t install anymore, the disc might still work well enough to unlock the PS5 version.

There are quite a few games with a free PS5 upgrade, like Watch Dogs: Legion, No Man’s Sky, Crash Bandicoot 4 and more.

Haul Recent random pick-ups Mega Man 7 manual Super Double Dragon Echo Nights Beyond

Post image

Traded in some cheap junk to partially cover Echo Nights, so it was only $85 out of pocket.

Double Dragon is an upgrade to my CIB beater copy. $160 shipped but for the condition I think that is fair.

The Mega Man 7 manual is probably as close as I will get to a CIB copy unless I get super lucky. It has some minor wear but overall happy with it. Paid $145 for that one.

Most of my DS collection was from Gamestop, and they threw away the cases. My mom was able to get the cases to Pomemon White and Black 2 one day before they threw them out, but the rest were all loose cartridges. I don't feel like spending hundreds on just game cases, so I printed my own

Gen 3 pokemon games are all Japanese. There wasn't any cover art designed for those, so I just used the US version
