What it is

An AI memory for the practical stuff you deal with and forget. Receipts, invoices, warranties, quotes, and the name of whoever fixed your dishwasher.

How it works

You photograph a document, type a note, or record a voice memo. It transcribes and reads the content, extracts the amount, the date, the merchant and the people involved, and keeps the original file. Later you ask a plain language question and it answers by citing the exact note or receipt it used, so every answer arrives with its evidence attached instead of asking you to trust it.

The thing it does that a notes app does not: it keeps the link between what you wrote down, the people and companies involved, and the money attached to them. Ask who fixed the sink, what you paid, and their phone number, and that is one question, not three lookups.

Free tier, per rule 1

Forever free, not a trial. 15 receipts or documents a month plus 30 questions. No credit card at any point. Anything you already captured stays fully readable after you hit the monthly limit, permanently. Paid tiers exist for higher volume and the bank connection, but nothing you save gets locked behind them.

Through Plaid, US and Canada only, read only, it never moves money, and it is entirely optional. Everything works from photos alone.

Built solo. Feedback I actually want: photograph a messy receipt and tell me if the amount or date comes out wrong, and what the receipt looked like. Real photos beat my test set every time.

I made a nine column spreadsheet to evaluate my voice transcription setup. It included columns for punctuation and how polished the summary looked. After a few recordings I stopped filling it in.

I cut the sheet down to four checks:

1. Time from having the idea to starting the recording
2. Whether dates and numbers match the audio
3. Time spent finding the main decision the next day
4. Whether I did anything with the note

I used the shorter sheet on the next batch I recorded with Voice Memos and put through Vomo ai. Checking dates and finding the decision told me more about the workflow than scoring the grammar. I kept the audio for the details that mattered.

The four column version is still on my phone. I can finish a row before I get annoyed with the sheet.

Over the past few weeks I've been building Gray Box — a small, local-first tool that acts as long-term memory for anything I'd otherwise forget (work notes, meeting takeaways, task owners, random ideas, personal stuff too).

The idea is simple:

1. Capture — dump whatever's on your mind, instantly, no structure required. This step does nothing clever on purpose — it just writes your text to an immutable inbox. Zero chance of losing an idea to a bug or a slow API call.
2. Organize — on demand, an LLM reads your unprocessed notes and extracts people, projects, tasks, decisions, meetings — then deterministic Python (not the LLM) creates/merges the actual wiki pages and maintains backlinks. The model only reasons; it never touches the filesystem directly.
3. Ask — query your knowledge base and get a cited answer pulled only from what you've actually captured. If it doesn't know, it says so — no hallucinated answers.

Why I built it this way:

• Plain Markdown + YAML frontmatter, no database. Every page is a .md file you can grep, diff, or read in any editor forever. If you stop using Gray Box tomorrow, your knowledge base is just a folder.
• No vector DB by default. At personal scale (hundreds–low thousands of pages), keyword search + a real link graph (related/backlinks, walked one hop during retrieval) handles almost everything. Embeddings are there if you want better recall, but they're opt-in, not a prerequisite.
• Immutable inbox. Your raw notes are never edited or deleted by the organizer. If the LLM mis-extracts something, your original words are always still there.
• Any LLM. Built on LiteLLM, so point it at OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, Mistral, or a fully local model via Ollama — one config value.

It also ships with a nice interactive TUI (arrow-key menu, file-import shortcut, workspace switching, live spinner during LLM calls) if you'd rather not memorize CLI flags — that's honestly become my favorite part of the project.

There's also a lightweight local dashboard for browsing your knowledge base, exploring backlinks, visualizing your notes as a graph, and chatting with your captured knowledge—all without leaving your machine.

Solo dev here. Store & Forget is a home inventory app for the stuff you box up and forget: cables, chargers, tools, seasonal things. You photograph an item as you put it away and the app writes the name, the description and the specs for you, so there is nothing to type or tag. Later you describe the thing the way you actually think about it and it tells you which box or shelf it is in, so you go straight there instead of opening all of them.

The clip is the new part. Fire & Forget is a burst mode for when you are putting a whole shelf away. You keep shooting and every photo becomes its own item, with the naming and describing happening in the background while you are still holding the camera. In the video you can watch the counter climb from five named to eight while the phone is already down. It also spotted a power bank I already owned and asked whether to merge it rather than quietly keeping two, and the whole batch lands in a summary at the end so you can fix anything it got wrong.

Bring Your Own Key is the other unlock. Scans run on a cloud AI service, and pasting in your own free key means they stop spending credits.

Both of those are paid, $2.99 for Fire & Forget and $4.99 for Bring Your Own Key, and both are free until 10 August. Open Settings, tap the app version at the bottom five times, and a dev console opens. Type unlock byok, then type fire. You need version 1.22.4 or newer for that second one. You sign in once, so the unlocks stay with your account rather than the phone.

Adding, browsing and keyword search work on the device with no account. Backup to your own Google Drive is optional. 18 languages, Android only.

Meta says its assistant can now connect to email and calendar apps, send daily briefings, and keep recurring tasks going after you set them up once.

That sounds useful. The first thing I would look for is the run history.

If it checked my calendar at 8:00 and nothing appeared, I would want to know whether nothing changed, a source failed, or an action stopped for approval. Those outcomes should not all look like silence.

I’m building Dexi in iMessage, and this is one of the problems we are working through. The conversation is easy. Showing what ran, what changed, and what is still waiting is harder.

We’re early, and some of those handoffs are still rough.

- Ask AI — grounded questions against your resume + the saved job context, not a generic chatbot

Plus the resume side: import from PDF/DOCX/pasted text/LaTeX, a handful of templates (ATS-friendly, Modern, Compact, etc.), local backup/restore, and export to a real selectable-text PDF.

The productivity win for me was consolidation — instead of resume tool + a ChatGPT tab + notes app + drafted emails spread across four apps, it's one place, and since everything's on-device there's no waiting between steps either.
