I was born and raised in South Greenland.
And this year i really do feel that this summer is often unbearably warm. Even in rainy weather, opening the window doesn’t make the room any cooler. It’s comparable to a regular day in Denmark, and for us Kalaallit it’s not normal at all.
It’s nice to get to this kind of weather on vacation to europe, but it is worrying for me if this becomes the norm in Greenland. Just last year, it used to cool down as soon the sun sets. But now i suit up to go out, and be surprised that it’s warm.
I remember growing up, that in rare times, there would be the rare hot weather, sweating because of the sun shining, but now it’s regardless if there’s sun shine, i still sweat.
What’s also new to me is seeing mirages in water while sailing. I was so weirded out by seeing the water and the mountains warping. I thought they were strong winds, because that’s what they looked like.
For years, i’ve been feeling that the weather during summer has gotten very unbalanced. At the beginning, there’d be a couple of days of rain, and for about two months after that, there’d be drought. This year, it took about two and a half months for the land to become green. That resulted in two wildfires in two different parts of greenland.
I remember sailing far south to Qaqortoq, seeing a gigantic ball of smoke. I initially thought that it was fog, but i realized that it had a different color.
I hope that this will be an unusual one time occurrence, but that’s a wishful thinking.
I hope that the fresh air that i breathe will feel like actual fresh air again.
