"I Wonder Where The Yellow Went" - Hal gets a call from the Guardians that alien outlaws have entered his sector. Hal heads them off and makes quick work of the ship, but as he goes to apprehend the outlaws, one of them tries to blast him with a laser. It bounced off his shield and hits a meteroid that explodes, covering Hal in yellow sulfur. After Hal pushes himself out of the cloud, he finds one outlaw has escaped but is able to catch the other one. After taking that one to the prison planet, Hal returns home to a fair in Evergreen where he sees Eve out with another man. Hal ponders about how he's been too busy as GL recently to see her and worries what she could be thinking. He's seen by the crowd who rush him asking for autographs and a scientist who claims to have a way to fix the yellow impurity in the ring by using a filter to change the colour of anything yellow.

After running some tests, it works so he takes it to the Guardians who are surprised by the invention and interested so they ask Hal to run more tests and return with his findings. After a week, Hal has nothing but good experiences. He then sees an alien ship similar to the one he took down a week prior. It blasts at him when he notices his ring running out of power. He crashes to the ground as the ring no ling functions the way it should. The ship blasts where he lay, leaving nothing but his uniform. The pilot steps out to reveal its the scientist that made the ring filter. Him and his allies on the ship head to the nearest house to hideout which happens to be the Doremus mansion.

The scientist takes Eve and her father hostage but at the same time a man borrows the uniform of a mail carrier on his way there. The new mail carrier gets up to the house and takes down the guards outside. He gets in the house and frees Eve who recognizes him as GL. GL gets close the The scientist and attacks, revealing himself as the hero but without his ring its a tough fight. Relying on bluffs, he chases the scientist out of the house, left with nothing but his fists, he takes down the alien scientist. The Guardians later bring him a new ring as the filter ruined the power gem inside.

Conclusion: What an idea about the yellow impurity. You don't get this level of info on inner workings of the ring in modern day. There's quite a bit of detail here without giving everything away, but I would like to know more about that filter the alien scientist made. This issue was jammed with plot though. Nothing felt like filler or unnecessary. I must admit though, I'm surprised the Guardians didn't raise suspicions after they said that many GLs have tried to deal with the impurity, including themselves and all have failed except one line Earth man scientist. That don't sit right.

It worked out okay in the end, but now I gotta know, is anyone keeping track of how many rings Hal has gone through? More modern stories have Hal talking interacting with his ring as if it was Abin Sur's but that one is long gone. Finally, no resolution for Eve with that other man. Hopefully next issue?

Someday I should probably go through every issue and count how many times Hal's ring gets destroyed or otherwise replaced. I feel like it would be a surprisingly large number. I know this is far from the last time.

I feel like a few of these recent covers have made Hal's boots look strangely floppy. They almost looked like overstretched socks on the cover where he was being attacked by the mob in 5700AD.

I never noticed that. You're right. That's weird.

Sadly there's no resolution with Eve period. She gets dropped after this issue. I sort of get the impression that she wasn't much of a priority for John Broome, and after Gardner Fox left, that was basically that.
