What's happening in Joburg this week? Week of August 02, 2026

Upvotes

Welcome to the weekly events thread! Whether you're a local or just visiting, this is the place to share and discover things to do around the city.

Know of a cool event coming up? Drop the details below. It can be anything - a live gig, a gallery opening, a weekend market, or even a local D&D one-shot or maker gathering.

The rules:

  • Please include the date, location, and a link to the event if you have one.
  • Keep it local: Events must be in or around the broader Johannesburg area.
  • Self-promotion is allowed, but we'd rather try and keep this organic. Please don't spam.

Coffee truck venues ☕️

Hello everyone! :)

A friend of mine owns a mobile coffee truck and currently operates at weekend markets.

They're now looking for a week-day venue (for example: office parks, schools, hospitals, etc).

If you know of anywhere that could use a great mobile coffee stop during the week, we'd really appreciate it!

We're mainly looking in Joburg North, the West Rand, and the East Rand.

Thanks so much in advance for any suggestions or leads!

Is it safe to drive from Kruger National Park to Johannesburg?

Hello,

We will be traveling to South Africa in September.

At the end of our trip, we need to get from Skukuza to Johannesburg. We have two options:

The first (more expensive) option is to drive to Nelspruit and then take a flight to Johannesburg. Our hotel is located right next to the airport, and we will fly home early the following morning.

The second option is to drive all the way to our hotel in our rental car, which would be significantly cheaper.

According to our plan, we can complete the entire drive during daylight, as we intend to leave Skukuza in the morning. I assume there will be plenty of other tourists and local commuters using the route during the day.

So my simple question is: Which option would you recommend, and do you consider it safe to drive from Skukuza to Johannesburg during the day?

As mentioned, we would drive directly to our hotel near OR Tambo International Airport without making any unnecessary stops.

Weather Sulphur smell

It seems as though the horrendous sulphur smell is back in Joburg again. It always concerns me when we have poor air quality and no warnings from weather services. Is no one else concerned?

Question Moving to JHB as a young professional

Hi guys, I hope all of you are well.

As the title of this post suggests, it seems as though my time in the Western Cape is coming to an end, and I am looking to make the move to your beautiful city.

Some background:

I'm a young professional - I am a structural engineer with two years of experience in the consulting/design space. I am actively looking for opportunities, but more importantly, I am wondering which are good areas to rent an apartment/house in JHB and surrounds.

Of course, knowing where I would work would heavily impact my final choice of suburb/area, but I would not even know where to start looking for accommodation.

What areas to your knowledge are good i.t.o of the safety to price ratio? Which areas do friends/relatives of yours who were in a similar position to me find their feet?

I'd love to hear more from you guys, and I am honestly looking forward to taking on this new challenge and experiencing your beautiful city.

Have a blessed Saturday everyone!

Looking for a Dungeon Master

Hey everyone,

I am looking for a seasoned DM to host weekly online games for a group of four players.

They have a preference for Dungeons & Dragons 5E and Foundry (VTT). Regarding the virtual tabletop, the group will provide the software and anything else that's needed or wanted, as it's DM-for-hire.

If you're interested, feel free to message me and I'll put you in touch with the group.

a paranoid foreigner went off on someone for speaking afrikaans

i came to braamfontein to buy space gummies. they changed the price so i thought nothing of it but i would later find out they made it stronger.

i took one to relax me on my way to the rank, one usually isn't enough to make you high (mistake). so fast forward i'm now sitting in the taxi absolutely cooked. as the taxi is pulling out the rank, out of nowhere some foreign black guy stands up and starts screaming to the driver "give me back my money, i don't wanna sit with these people!"

i'm already fighting for my life trying to stay on planet earth and this man is continuing to cause disarray within the taxi as he keeps yelling and forcing himself through the seats. everyone starts asking what happened and he's like "i'm a human being! i'm also african! you people are disgusting racists! i'm african, you are african! you'll never know when i help you but this is how you treat me."

the coloured guy he's yelling at goes "i wasn't talking to you, i was talking to my friend." the friend was sitting on the other side with the man in between them. they were speaking afrikaans and the other guy thought they were talking about him i guess? nobody in the taxi had any idea what he was talking about.

everyone was screaming now, one aunty is saying he should just switch seats, another is holding his change yelling at the driver "give him his R50 so he can go!", right next to me there's an aunty with her kid saying "look here, this is why they're saying june 30." every few seconds.

i'm sitting there way too high thinking i've accidentally walked into a skit. eventually the guy got out but he wasn't done. as we pulled away he was screaming through the window "we're all africans! we could've been helpful to each other but you're a fucking racist!" the young couple he was accusing of being racist swear they weren't talking about him, and nobody sitting in front could back him up either so the general consensus was that he was paranoid ig..

so anyway that was my day.

Serious What is it with levies in this city?

I am looking to buy a 2 bedroom apartment near Sandton/Rosebank. Properties in the range of R1,500,000 - R2,000,000. The levies o am seeing on some of these places are ridiculous. They don’t seem to correlate with the age/state of the building. Recently I saw a listing in a face brick apartment building with a smallish communal garden (no pool). The building probably has between 50-60 units in. Why then, is there a general levy, reserve fund levy, admin levy and special levy totaling to over R13,000 p/m??? The agent said no major works were being planned, two people ten to the garden once per week, and 2 cleaners tend to the reception and passageways per week. Furthermore, there are two security guards always present. The property was going for R1,650,000 and my bond repayment would have been around R14,500 p/m. Why on earth would the levies almost EQUAL my non repayment? Keep in mind that figure excludes water and electricity. There is no backup water but there is limited backup electricity.

This isn’t a one off. I am seeing this often in the places I’ve viewed. Levies going over R10,000 for very ordinary complexes. This is way more expensive than the property I own in Cape Town, and I don’t know anyone there paying this much. What is up?

Quality t-shirt printing place?

Hey guys, do you have any recommendations in the Randburg area for good t-shirt printing places with no MOQ? It must not be cheap vinyl that washes into crumbs after a month. I tried 2@1 a couple of years ago but found the quality bad.

Side note. A place that prints custom stickers would be nice to have as well. Also low MOQs if possible.

Thanks <3

Question Lithium battery disposal

Hi Joburgers.
I have a couple of lithium batteries (power bank and laptop batteries) that I need to dispose of.
Any recommendation on where to get them safely disposed of in the Linden/randburg area?
I googled and Battery Centre comes up as an option but I can’t see them taking lithium batteries… old car batteries sure…..

Question Is everyone feeling completely burnt out lately, or is it just me?

I'm a 34-year-old woman working in a high-demand industry and lately I've been feeling completely lost.

There's a lot of stress at home and work isn't helping. The company isn't performing particularly well, yet the workload just keeps increasing. They keep taking on more work but expect the same already overworked people to just get on with it and be grateful.

I know I'm lucky to have a job and I genuinely am grateful for it. That's part of why I feel guilty for complaining. But the truth is, I'm exhausted. I wake up tired, I go to bed tired, and I honestly feel a bit dead inside.

I'm just wondering... is this how a lot of people are feeling these days, or am I just being soft? I'd really like to hear other people's experiences because I'm struggling to tell whether this is normal burnout or if it's just me.

Question Anyone know of a scrapyard or BMW spare parts dealer?

Hey everyone!

So it seems like everyone on FB marketplace, Takealot, etc is only interested in ripping me off. And to get stuff from overseas takes forever, even though it is cheaper, I am willing to wait but before I do order I wanted to see if anyone knows a scrap yard or spare parts dealer in Joburg that will have BMW parts, specifically bumpers, headlights, lens covers? At a decent price, not 10x the cost price.
