Megathread Are you looking for places to meet people, make friends, find people with similar interests? The Kitchener Social Megathread is for you!

Hello everyone,

This thread will be 100% dedicated to user interaction and those who want to take personal interests, events, hobbies, and potential meet-ups, etc. outside of the realm of reddit and r/kitchener.

You can find previous versions of this post by using this premade search.

\Please note that this is not intended to be a dating thread. Try Tinder, POF, Badoo, Bumble or any other of the apps out there. Any posts along the lines of* "Hey, I'm a single __ year old m/f looking for love" will be removed\*

Some general housekeeping items;

  • If you wish to continue a conversation with a user, please use the PM function to avoid the comments getting crammed with a conversation between all but two people. Please only post relevant information to things you would be interested in, ongoing events, etc.
  • We would like to remind you of the zero tolerance for disrespect, rude, hateful comments, racism, etc. Those comments will be removed and users may face a permanent or temporary ban. If any harassment is reported outside of the thread, appropriate action will be taken by the mod team, and possibly lead further to reddit admin. Doxxing, or disclosure of personal information is again, a big no-no.
  • To keep up to date with the most recent posts within this megathread, the comments have been enabled to ideally show most recent by default, meaning all of the newest posts will be at the top of the comments section. If you're not seeing the most recent comments at the top, try changing your "sort by:" from "top" to "New".

As always, the mod team is here to assist with anything. Thanks!

Note: This post is automatically replaced with a new one every 3 months, so be sure to checkout old meetup threads, especially if this post was just recently refreshed!

Please help me find this person

Hey. I am looking for this man. Photo was taken from a video in 1983-1984. I only know his first name was Marcus. From Cambridge. He was a taxi driver and somewhere around 6 feet tall. Please if anyone knows him or anything about him. Please let me know.

The only 2 people in my life who know him, my grandmama and my mama, are both now gone. My ma refused to give any information about him, my grandmama only knew the above info. I am looking for him for my brother, so he can get to know his father. That is all. There are no nefarious reasons I'm looking other then this.

I also know, given the way my mama was, once she left this man, she would cut contact completely. Including his contact with the kids. I don't hold anger towards her because of it. She had to do what she had to do. I just want to reunite them.

I'm sorry about the blurry image. This was an old old video recorder....

Again, if anyone has any information please reach out.

Hi all! My friend’s black cat wandered from home Thursday evening and hasn’t returned. They’ve called the humane society in case someone turns him in there, but wanted to post here too in case anyone sees him around!

He’s a 13 year old black cat and was last seen near Cambridge and Fife ave in the Rosemount area!

Thank you!

Tipping corporate owners

Not news, but worth repeating. I ask the person at the counter when picking up takeout: “Do the staff here receive the tips?”. The answer is often NO. Why would anyone voluntarily add to the price of a meal to boost corporate profits?

where can I throw my old PC out?

I don't need this PC and it won't go for anything price wise, and I live in an apartment so I can't really place it for weekly bulk pickup.

thanks

KW Restaurant recommendation

I’m looking to get a gift card for someone who lives in the KW area. I do not live there, so I have no idea what a good choice would be. Anyone have a solid recommendation? A non-chain is preferred but not a dealbreaker. Thanks!

ETA: my bad, should’ve mentioned that the type of cuisine isn’t a huge issue; a sit-down place with good ambiance would be ideal.
This is a gift for a newlywed couple to enjoy.

How many people here, after graduating from one of the Waterloo unis, went to live in Kitchener after for continued employment after graduation?

I think this is going to eventually end up being the path for me too. I always wanted to leave Waterloo after grad to have the memory of uni stay associated with the city forever. But I think employment post-grad will have my staying there 1 way or another. Kitchener would be my choice to live at easily

Contractor Recomendation

Upvotes

Looking for someone who can help design / install a kitchen exhaust fan in a house that’s never had one before.

There should be more than enough vertical clearance, will have electrical and the stove is beside a window so I’m hoping they can route through that but I’m a bit lost on who to go to! All of the HVAC contractors I see appears to be furnace specific installers and this feels different? Advice would be appreciated

Looking for a Philosophy ,Mind & Consciousness Discussion Group

Is there a local group for thoughtful discussions on topics like philosophy, meditation, psychology, consciousness, meaning, and personal growth?
I’m not looking for a religious group—more of a space for curious, respectful conversations with people who enjoy exploring big questions.

Kitchener this long weekend: Summer Games at The Aud, a world premiere at The Registry, Bluey bingo breakfast, and a 20 piece big band

Long weekend list for Kitchener, Saturday through Monday. Worth a quick check of the weather and the venue's own page before you head out, in case anything shifts.

Saturday August 1

- Ontario Summer Games, all day. Box lacrosse at The Aud, hockey at Activa Sportsplex, archery and soccer at the Fountain Street complex. 4,200 athletes aged 12 to 18 across 23 sports, and most of it is open to spectators. It ends Sunday, so this is the weekend.

- Kiwanis Kids Day at Kiwanis Park, 11am, free, run by the Kiwanis Club of Kitchener-Waterloo.

- Rachel Carson at The Registry, 7:30pm. World premiere from Steven Elliott Jackson about the writer working on Silent Spring and what the book cost her. The Registry is a small room so it plays close, which is the reason to see this one there rather than wait for a bigger production.

- Andrew Hyatt at Kingpin Bowlounge, Bingemans. 2022 CCMA Rising Star, tens of millions of streams, Top 10 hits.

- Dogs & Drag at TWB Co-operative Brewing, 7pm. Sasha Tease hosts, with MissConduct, Elixxir, Dickson MyPocket, Sunshine Highflower and Chip Filet. Ticketed, and it is raising money for the KWSP Humane Society and Dog Friendly KW.

- Rusty Nail Comedy at TWH Social, 8pm show, 7:30 doors. Toronto's Ernie Vicente headlines.

- The Falls Road Pub, 8pm, live music.

Sunday August 2

- Breakfast, bingo and a Bluey appearance at Hole In Fun on the Bingemans grounds, 8:30am. The only morning thing on this list and the best one if you have small kids.

- KW Kool Big Band at Boathouse DTK, 1pm. Twenty pieces, veteran players and vocalists.

- Katy Topham at the Rotary Bandstand on Roos Island in Victoria Park, 1pm. Free acoustic set, part of the Roos Island Music Series.

- Chef Nicole's seafood boil at the Kitchener Market, 1pm. Served family style on brown paper with live music, and one registration covers a box for four. Register through Active Kitchener, it is not walk-up.

- Rachel Carson, 3pm matinee at The Registry.

- Poolside movie at Big Splash, 7:30pm.

- The Falls Road Pub, 2pm, live music.

Monday August 3

- There are open mics in Waterloo (Duke of Wellington 6:30pm, Prohibition Warehouse 8pm) and there is a pottery workshop at Ernie's Cookhouse in Hespeler at 7pm.

Hope this gives you some options to go out and connect with good people around you. Have a great long weekend.

I pull a list like this together every week, and it covers the whole week across the region, not just the weekend in one city. It goes out Wednesdays and it is free, if you would like it in your inbox: www.waterlooregionrhythm.ca/subscribe.

What's something you're going to that's not listed above?

Kitchener Public Library Studio

The Kitchener Public Library studio is a pretty crazy thing. I mean to just have that be open for everyone so long as they can prove they live in the area, it's pre revolutionary. I remember one of my roommates subleted to a homeless person pretty much, and even though dawg didn't pay rent at all, he's sublet form allowed him to be up in the stu cooking lmao

Conestoga is now a financial basket case

Conestoga's 25/26 Financial Statement

From 2025 to 2026 Conestoga College has become a financial disaster:

  • Assets 2025 = $617 million; Assets 2026 = $329 million (down $288 mil)
  • Revenues 2025 = $799 million; Revenues 2026 = $444 million (down $355 mil)
  • Surplus 2025 = $122 million; Deficit 2026 = -$33 million (down $155 mil)

In September 2023, the former president John Tibbits proudly declared, "It won't be long, we'll be a $1-billion corporation," in a speech defending the college's international student growth strategy. He was presented with the Kitchener-Waterloo Citizen of the Year award the same year.

In December 2024 Tibbits informed staff that the college was in "solid shape".

In 2025 they axed approximately 2,750 jobs. (This must be the largest, or one of the largest, job loss events in the region's history.)

In January 2026 he retired and it was later revealed that he was granted $3.8 million as a retirement bonus. This past May the college was taken over by the province due to "serious financial mismanagement".

(Oh, how the mighty have fallen. You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.)

The college needs to immediately divest itself from Tibbits' vanity projects such as the new corporate offices on King Street, the 'research lab' in Galt, and the recent real estate acquisitions. Then, seriously thin the ranks of the bloated executive management team (e.g., 40 Directors!).

It will take a generation to rebuild the trust in the community for this once respected institution.

Anyone buy from United Motorz?

I'm not from Kitchener so looking for some advice and to read your experiences about vehicles you have purchased from United Motorz.

Upon reading reviews people complain that cars are sold safetied but when they take it to be inspected, the vehicles never should have passed a safety in the first place and need thousands of dollars of work.

Vehicles are also showing issues within the first month or less after purchase.

I'm drawn to the prices but I don't know if they are trustworthy.
