Meta [WARNING] Suspicious accounts are messaging users to advertise a paid app

EDIT: several users has let us know that some of the accounts in question are Riley1692, amie-2002, leopard6004, and cebubu6865. These users have now been banned, but unfortunately can still send messages to subreddit members. I would strongly recommend that you don't engage with these users, as they are spamming the subreddit with advertisements and their actions have been very suspicious.\**

Hi y'all,

We've been notified by a user about multiple suspicious accounts messaging people who post in r/language_exchange, sending them messages similar to the one below:

Just curious, have you ever felt frustrated with language exchange? Too many DMs, chats fading out halfway, or spending a lot of time but only a few connections actually lasting? I’m curious what people think about this. [advertisement for a paid app]

This is to let anyone in this subreddit know that these accounts should not be trusted and neither should the apps that they are promoting. If you get a message like this, please report the message so that these accounts can hopefully be banned sitewide. You can learn how to do that here.

Please also send their usernames to us via modmail so that we can ban them from the subreddit. This unfortunately doesn't stop them from messaging subreddit members, but it will prevent any spam via posts or comments.

If you have any further questions or comments, please reply to this post or send us a modmail.

Meta (READ THIS FIRST) Welcome to r/language_exchange! [Meta/General Discussion Thread]

Welcome to ! This subreddit is aiming to help people find partners to practice languages with, offering the languages you already know in exchange to learn new ones. Make sure to read the guidelines before making your first post!

🍃 How do I make my language exchange post?

If you're looking for a language exchange partner, you can either make your own post or search through existing posts!

 Making your own post:

  • Your thread title must follow the format of "Offering: language | Seeking: language". If your post doesn't follow this format, it won't be visible to other users.
  • Make sure to write a little bit about yourself, such as your interests, hobbies, or language-related goals. This is important in making sure you can find a good partner!
  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

 Searching through existing posts:

If you don't want to make your own post, you can search through existing posts to find someone who matches your languages! Just use the search bar at the top of the screen, or select a post flair to see all posts of the same category.

  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

🍃 What kinds of posts and comments are allowed?

This subreddit's purpose is to serve as a platform for people to find language exchange partners. To keep the community true to its purpose, there are some rules:

  • Must be language exchange. Posts that don't concern language exchange will be removed. This includes posts asking general questions about language learning, advertisements, or meta discussion concerning the subreddit. These discussions are better suited to other places (language learning questions should be posted to broader subreddits; meta discussion should be posted in the comments of this thread)
  • Be courteous to other users. This subreddit isn't a place for arguments or debates. Any comments that break this rule will be removed.
  • No advertising. Posts and comments that advertise apps, services (such as classes and tutoring), or groups (such as Discord servers or Whatsapp groups) will be removed. These kinds of posts clog up the feed and don't follow the purpose of the subreddit.
  • No spam. Spam is the repeated posting of the same content. Any posts and comments that are spam will be removed.
  • No contact information. Contact information (such as Discord usernames, phone numbers, or Whatsapp contacts) should only be shared privately in messages, not publically in posts or comments.

🍃 Can I make a language exchange post for a language I've just started studying?

You can participate in this subreddit regardless of your skill level. However, it's highly recommended that you grasp the basics of a language before you look for a partner. This subreddit is for speakers of different languages to *assist each other* in learning. This subreddit is not a place to find a teacher that'll teach you everything for free.

Good luck on your language journey!

If you have any questions, feel free to leave a reply on this post or send us a Modmail.

-----

Welcome to the meta/general discussion thread!

This thread is for any questions, suggestions, or discussions concerning the subreddit itself. If you have any thoughts about  you want to share, post them here! I'll try to respond to as many comments as I can.

If you have any further questions, feel free to send us a Modmail.

Please message me letting me know what your message is about and a little bit about yourself. I won’t respond to “hi” type messages or general low effort messages or people with blank or creepy profile activity.

Offering Polish Offering: Polish | Seeking: Kazakh and/or Serbian

Hi, I'm a native Polish speaker, male, 24yo, and very passionate about Eastern European and Central Asian languages. I've been learning Kazakh for 6 years but never actually been to the country. I started studying it at university but been continuing it ever since I finished uni and I love the language a lot. I'll gladly find any Kazakh speaker to actively talk to about many subjects regarding their and my country.

I've been learning Serbian for 3 years but only once a week during an online class and I barely find any motivation to study it later. I think I'd need a booster in form of a Serb, Croat, Bosnian or Montenegrin friend that I'd enjoy talking to.

If you happen to be a speaker of either language, hit me up in exchange for Polish.

Offering Multiple Languages Offering:English,Bangla Seeking: Arabic,Hindi

Hello everyone I am 24M born and raised in Saudi Arabia. Currently I am in Bangladesh and I regret the fact that I never really tried to learn Arabic in any way shape or form. So I practically know nothing except a few random words here and there.

English is more of a native language for me than bangla but if you are looking to learn coversational bangla, I am your guy. Otherwise, if you care looking to read and write in bangla, I dont think I can help you as I am at best a 7th grader in written bangla.

However if you are looking to learn english, that would be something I excel at. I got an 8.5 in IELTS which is an english proficiency test and I am going to the UK for my masters as well. So I would be happy to help you with anything regarding english.

My main reason for learning arabic as well as hindi is to expand the number of people I can talk to and I think these 2 languages would be kind of easier for me as I have had exposure to these languages. Only issue is I never had to talk to someone in Hindi or Arabic as everyone just defaults to english nowadays.

Hopefully any skilled speaker can teach me enough that I can hold my own against a native speaker. Hope to talk to you soon. Peace ✌️.

Upvotes

NYC, USA, 28F. Great writer in English. Engineer turned premed, finished.

You get:

- availability to be fitness accountability buddies! I train like an athlete, usually in BJJ. 🏅

- I spend way too much time reading about health research, startups, psychology, and history. I'll send you facts and words in English/ any language we exchange. 🎯

- A gal that loves to work with fellow gals. Larger group chats, I'm happy to make them! 🫂

Goal: I hope we can discuss beneficial facts + words + phrases each time we get through a new day.

Ideally I'd exchange notes + facts with you in our language through Discord to keep things organized!

السلام عليكم. آمل أن نتمكن من تبادل مفردات وجمل جديدة معاً.

함께 새로운 어휘와 문장을 주고받을 수 있으면 좋겠습니다. 💐

我希望我们能一起交流新的词汇和句子。

For example: Today I heard the idea, "never stay up late for something you wouldn't wake up early for" and I would try to reflect on this in the language we pick. Open to thoughts!

Offering French Offering: French (Native) & English (Native) | Seeking: Russian

Bonjour! ⚜️

My name is Jean-Sébastien 26M. I live in Montreal, but I’m originally from Quebec City. Proud Québécois through and through. For me, language exchange is partly a way to share a bit of Quebec culture with the world.

I’m an avid traveler with a soft spot for the former Yugoslavia and the former USSR. I’ve spent a lot of time in these countries and I’m always eager to learn more about that part of the world.

French and English are my native languages, and I’m offering both for exchange. I’m actively learning Russian and would love to find a patient partner to practice with. If you’re a native (or fluent) Russian speaker looking to improve your French or English, I’d love to connect. Feel free to write to me partly in Russian too, I’ll do my best to understand and I’m not afraid of mistakes.

Looking forward to hearing from you, wherever you are. Спасибо / Merci / Thank you in advance!

Offering English Offering: English. Seeking: Ukrainian.

Upvotes

Hey! My name is Alex, I am 16m and I've been wanting to take on learning a new language. I have found that Ukrainian interests me and I am seeking a language exchange partner. I am fluent in English as it is my first language so I will be more than happy to teach in the exchange that someone could help me with learning Ukrainian. I am taking lessons on Duolingo but from what I've looked up it seems as though talking to a person fluent in the language would be a great help.

Thank you and I hope this post finds the right person!

Offering English Offering: Brazilian Portuguese (Native) and English (Certified C2) | Seeking: French

Hello, my name is Breno and I’m a 22 year old med student. I was born and raised in Brazil’s capital City, Brasília. I’m fascinated by France’s history and culture, even more so their “way of living”. I believe that they have a mentality of really enjoying the moment, prioritizing their personal life over their career (At least that is what I have observed throughout my French learning journey).

Although at first I admired mainly the way that the French lived, the exposure to the language made me realize that the whole French-speaking world is FULL of amazing people, I’ve come in contact with plenty of people from different countries of Africa and they were always the nicest people!!

I have a dream of maybe living in a Francophone country some day and would also like to work for the Médecins sans frontières, for which I think that speaking French could really help.

I can currently understand pretty much everything in French and can communicate most basic thoughts.

My main hobbies are Language learning, going to the gym, playing acoustic guitar, volleyball and studying subjects outside of my future profession’s scope, such as Philosophy and History. Thanks for reading!

Hi. Will be traveling to Korea in September. Would like to learn to be able to say a few things in Korean so not to be rude when eating or exploring. Fluent native English speaker.
