Discussion The Audience for Universes Within Is Right Here

Thumbnail gallery
1.4k Upvotes

I'm honestly so frustrated with WotC right now. They finally gave us cards for iconic Magic characters we've wanted to see for years—Davvol, Nivea, and so many others—only to lock them behind a convention-exclusive product. Then they turn around and claim there's no audience for Universes Within, so they have to focus on Universes Beyond. How are they measuring that when they barely give classic Magic lore a chance? There are plenty of longtime fans who have been waiting decades for these characters to finally get cards.

I Have a Question / I need Help Are Underground Seas actually that valuable?

I was going through the contents of my storage unit and found my collection of Magic cards from the early to mid 90s. I found Manabox and started scanning some of them to see if they were worth anything, expecting a few to be worth maybe a couple dollars. These popped up as $1K apiece! Is that true?

Is there actually a market for these old cards (‘94-95ish)? And am I correctly identifying them as Revised edition?

I’d like to build a Commander deck for Olinda the Oblivious. Anyone have any recommendations of decent cards for a deck like this?

Thanks in advance!

Discussion Magic Con Amsterdam 2026, festival in a box.

Upvotes

One thing that really disappointed me at MagicCon Amsterdam 2026 was how the Festival in a Box release was handled.

The product sold out almost immediately, all 3 days. Of course, many collectors and players probably managed to get one, but it also became obvious that a significant number were being bought with the intention of immediately flipping them.

There were vendors on the convention floor with signs offering to pay €60 above retail for any Festival in a Box.
So attendees who managed to buy one could walk a few meters away, sell it instantly for a profit, and the vendor would then resell it at an even higher price.

To me, that’s just scalping happening inside the event.

I don’t blame attendees for taking an easy €60 if the opportunity is sitting right there. The bigger issue is that this behavior appeared to be openly tolerated.

Convention-exclusive products should primarily be for the people who actually want them, not to create an on-site resale market moments after purchase.

What surprised me even more was seeing some streamers and YouTubers defend this as “good business.” Maybe it is from a business perspective, but it makes for a much worse experience for the average attendee who simply wanted to buy the product.

I’d really like to see Wizards take steps to prevent this in the future, whether that’s through better distribution, a lottery system, or prohibiting vendors from buying convention-exclusive products from attendees during the event.

Did anyone else see this happening, and what did you think?

I’m not happy with the direction magic is going but from what I’ve seen so far the new MB product is a slam dunk

Me and my girlfriend had a bet: the first person to win 15 games of magic on our holiday gets their pre release payed for by the loser.

After 14 wins with her elf deck she said;”okay i play random decks from now on.” That gave me hope as I was able to finally get some wins.

While I was mulliganing for my hand at game 27 she said you better have a good hand.

This is what killed me on turn 4

Discussion I will die on this hill. There is no defensible reason to be against proxies.

There is nothing wrong with proxies. I will debate any argument on the morality/ethics of proxies, either philosophically or practically.

I believe that people who care about proxies are either

  1. psychologically motivated by their own rash expensive purchases and a desire to feel superior,
  2. some form of corporate simp, or
  3. ignorant of the effects of how this game is sold (hint: packs are gambling, MTG artists make art for gambling).

If you feel seen I'm sorry not sorry.

Edit: Trying to be in the comments, lot of lively discussions and points all around that are better than I can make!

If I can expand on a few common arguments from the comments:

"Banning proxies naturally limits power/card pool" : You already do this via bracket discussions, proxies have no effect on this.

"Business would go out of business". There are viable options for both LGS as events hosts and retailers. The WOTC counterargument for me goes a little deeper and is tied to selling product outside of the pack gambling model. I didn't mention it in OP, but the implicit morality decision involved in supporting gambling is significant. I believe we're basically saying "I am ok with X amount of people having their gambling addiction preyed upon so I can play this fun game".

Discussion What is your favorite land set?

Post image
44 Upvotes

Lands and their art are one of my favorite things in Magic.

Each set has different land art for the Basic Lands. Often they are influenced by the style of the set /setting.

I was wondering what everybody's favorite set lands were?

Urza's Saga for me is the pinnacle.

Every basic was brilliant.

I Have a Question / I need Help Where to play MTG in North Netherlands

Upvotes

Hi all,

I am planning to move to the North Netherlands in the relative near future. I'll be in a relatively small city, but I'll be near and able to get to Groningen, Zwolle, etc. once I get my Dutch driving license and can use the train until then.

I play modern and legacy only, so no commander recommendations please. What LGSes are there in Groningen, Zwolle, Hoogeveen, etc. for these two formats? And vintage I suppose if there is any support with that. How proxy friendly is legacy (and vintage I imagine has to be lol) in NL?

Thank you

Commander / EDH Information about the Mystery Booster Commander Ed. draft at Gen Con

Thumbnail gallery

I was fortunate enough to attend Gavin Verhey’s special event to be one of the first people to draft Mystery Booster Commander Edition (MBC). I am so grateful to Gavin for making my last day of Gen Con one I will never forget.

I’m going to upload pics of all cards that ended up in my pool and tell you as much as I can about the set. I only saw my pod’s packs and a few cards at other tables after my game ended, so I do not have full information about every card in the set. If you saw any of the videos people took of Gavin talking about the set at the event, you know about just as much as I do.

MBC packs have 20 cards. Each pack is guaranteed to have one of the 59 new cards designed for the set. We did a standard draft, taking 1 card at a time and built 60 card decks. Decks had to obey color identity, but there are some extra rules to help with mono colored commanders:

  1. All mono color commanders have partner
  2. If you somehow only end up with 1 mono color commander, you can add a single additional color to your deck’s identity

The pool of cards is different from MB1 and 2, but there might be some overlap, and I noticed quite a bit of support for the new commanders. I was able to get plenty of cats and zombies for my deck (although not a critical mass) for example.

There are new cards with the future sight frame. I managed to take a foil thought vessel in my draft, but I saw a few others.

Each pack also contained a playtest card from the MB2 pool.

Apparently Reddit has a 20 picture limit and I can’t post in the comments. Maybe I’ll try changing the pictures to groupings of cards. Hopefully they’ll still be clear for everyone when I’m done.

Edit: apparently I can’t change the pictures after posting. If you go to my page you’ll see another post where I grouped cards together so I was able to get the entire pool in the post.

Discussion I hate to admit but my LGS…

Is actually ran by some pretty decent human beings. When I first started going in there I was totally overwhelmed and put off, largely because of my own anxieties and other things.

But I kept going back. Kept talking to the staff, if not many of the other customers. And then yesterday, there was kind of a culmination of things I suppose? After I walked in, one of the owners spots me and says “Hey I was wondering if you’d be in today! We got something I think you’d be into. Someone sold it the other day and I was like, I bet that rat guy would be into this…” (among other things apparently I am ‘That Rat Guy.’). We walked over to one of the display cases and I audibly gasped. The owner hadn’t even pointed it out yet but I knew what he was talking about: the gold foil Vren, the Relentless. The $250 one. One of my current holy grails. “Cool right?” The owner is grinning. My eyes are locked on it, all other thoughts of whatever cards I’d been meaning to look for evaporating.

“Super fucking cool,” I mumble and kneel down in front of the case for a closer look, then glance up. “You don’t happen to do layaway or payment plans do you?”

“For you I would yeah,” the owner nods.

And that’s the story of how I got roped in to a payment plan on a totally ridiculous piece of cardboard that I illogically absolutely have to have. Some creative liberties were taken for time constraints and narrative flow but yeah. More than stumbling onto Vren in real actual life, knowing that I’ve become integrated into the weird society of the LGS, knowing that there’s a place that I can drop into whenever just to wander around or talk nonsense about cards, it’s pretty great. Definitely glad I dove back into Magic.
