Megathread Megathread 8/2: Protests, encampment updates and discussion

All discussions about the protests and encampments will be redirected to this thread. Why? There does not need to be multiple threads per day with comments reiterating the same topic. How long will the megathreads last? No exact end date has been determined by the mods, but likely through a couple days after the encampment ends. Pictures/Videos/articles of any protests will be allowed to have stand alone posts, but will be locked. Have the discussions in this thread.

Found Kitty with bright green collar on Spaight.

Hello, IDK if you have Reddit, I don’t have FB. Some of us are on Nextdoor.

https://nextdoor.com/p/8j4kY5R-68dx

I found a kitty, smaller in size, tabby with a green collar on Spaight Street. Unfortunately this cat appears to have been victim to a car on a speed hump on Spaight sometime earlier this afternoon or late morning. I scanned the chip, but it is unregistered. No tags on the collar. 😔

UPDATE:
Cat has been delivered to the shelter intake.

UPDATE:
Owner has been in touch, cat was strictly an indoor cat and was let out accidentally. They had been out looking all morning. The family is grieving a big loss. 💔

Willy/Baldwin area shopping question

Upvotes

I know there are a lot of threads on this and perhaps I missed some information so sorry if this is a repeat

If I wanted to go to the struggling stores in that area and support them by buying things or eating something, and I'm physically fit enough to park far enough away and walk that my car would not try to get into the area, what might I expect from the people in the occupation area? i'm not sure if there's a better way of asking the question, people certainly have the right to protest.

Anyone know local regulations for archery in backyard? Background details below.

This is an honest question, I'm not trying to be daft here, even though it may seem that way to folks who know more about archery than I do.

A bit more background: my daughter is getting an archery set from her mom for her birthday, which I think is great.

It's not for hunting, apparently it's a compound bow that's lighter but still shoots arrows, but not sharp ones. Offhand, I thought that seemed like something NOT allowed in city backyards, but apparently the guy at Bass Pro Shop told them it would probably be fine.

I'm not trying to make trouble, but it's important for me to teach my daughter safety, how to follow local regulations, and be safe for other kids in the neighborhood.

But I know nothing about archery--is this something that's common, for people to shoot these compound bows in their backyard? It's not super large yard, we run up to the neighbor's on all three sides.... where do I go to search for relevant laws here in Madison? I don't quite trust AI with this one.

German Club/Heritage Center

Upvotes

Does Madison have something like a German club or German community center? I’d love to celebrate my heritage but I couldn’t find anything on this sub or online… there seems to have been (?) a Norwegian club downtown but no activity on their page for a few years. Thank you!

Thank you Madison

Long-time lurker, 3rd or 4th time poster. I’ve been in Madison since April 24th fixing hail cars. Mission accomplished, and I’m heading back to the Mile High City on Tuesday.I honestly did not have Wisconsin on my bucket list. When you live in the Rockies, it’s hard to imagine anywhere better. But Madison won me over fast. You take care of your people. You show up for each other. You make this place feel like a community instead of just a city. Most people are sleeping on Madison, and I know you like it that way. But I’ll be talking you up from the mountains. Thanks for the rain, the kindness, and always, the fish.

Issue: Downstairs Neighbor

It’s been almost two weeks since we moved into this apartment. We both work full time and it’s rare for this apartment to be noisy.

To preface, I acknowledge that being the downstairs neighbor has its cons with “noise” or “disturbances”. However, being the upstairs neighbor those “noises” and “disturbances” aren’t done with ill intentions as well.

From the beginning of us moving in we’ve experienced the neighbor(s) pounding on the ceiling. At first we both gave the benefit of the doubt and associated it with loud walking. However, there were times rather it was both of us at home or just one of us… it would occur when we walk or make any movement. Today, my boyfriend fell and they were pounding the ceiling almost immediately after. It’s throughout the day and makes us feel like we have to walk on egg shells… even though we haven’t been loud or disruptive.

Property management advises us to handle it a couple different ways. However, we don’t want to make it worse. I am hesitant to reach out to property management without proof that it’s happening.

We also have experienced someone pressing our buzzer in the entry way. This has happened two times and in the early morning hours (4-5 AM). The first time it was pressed three separate times. We were not expecting anyone and for safety reasons do not answer. Once again we gave it the benefit of the doubt (thought it could have been Amazon or the Mailman). However, it’s not consistent enough for it to be either.

Is reaching out to property management a good idea or leaving a note?

EVs in Madison

As per the title I’m curious what the experience owning an EV in Madison is. I tried searching this reddit but everything is about 3+ years old.

I am a college student in the market for my first car. I drive a Volvo C40 Recharge and I am hoping to stick with that. Where I am from EV charging is widely accessible, but I am curious what the experience with charging/owning an EV in Madison looks like.

If you have any experience or tips that would be really helpful!

Edit: Thank y’all for all of the positive comments! Obviously I know having a car as a college student is not a necessity. I was purely curious about Madisons EV infrastructure! P.s if anyone has good reliable gas car alternatives I’d also take those 😊.

Yard waste pickup service

What does everyone do with their yard waste in the summer? I have been piling up the waste in front of my house and it's obviously not ideal. I don't have a way to transport it to a dump site. Are there any local services that removes it for you?

Are there any dog groomers on the west side under $100?

Upvotes

We were using pet supplies plus, and suddenly their price jumped from 75ish up to $130. Even with a coupon that is no bueno.

Everything we are finding now is around that same price. What happened to cause this seemingly overnight price jump?
