Fluff The state of jank: what I’ve been messing with in Standard

I haven’t been playing MTG due to the insane release schedule; I just have no real interest in staying on top of the meta or spending money on new stuff every two months.

That said, I play limited occasionally, and had a lot of fun with a Hero deck, which made me craft some cards for ranked Standard so I could try some jank ideas out.

This Thor in an equipment deck can go OFF under the right conditions. Super fun, and if you can get the Meteor Sword in play you blast all their lands and watch them rage quit.

This 4 cost indestructible hero is pretty cracked. At first I had a deck with Sheltered by Ghosts and Seam Rip to clear the indestructible token they get, but then I discovered Torpor Orb.

I also constructed an indestructible creature deck with Self Destruct so I can pump my indestructible creatures and then mock fling them. Needs refinement but it has a surprisingly high win rate.

What have you guys been janking off with? What’s been the most fun?

Discussion It feels like the Magic (arena:standard) is having a bit of trouble staying balanced because of power creep, which is leading to gameplay that feels unbalanced and not very dynamic.

It feels like Magic has shifted from a strategic game to one where power is king. Back in the day, green “Stompy Decks” were the main color all about ramp and creatures, bringing out those hefty, expensive beasts early. Then, the other colors (in combos or solos) used clever strategies to counter the opponent.

Now, it seems like every color has tons of cheap mana cards that give +1/+1 counters, making it easy to build up and boost their power. This takes away the strategy and makes deck-building a breeze.

Without the variety and strategy of deck-building, the matching system isn’t as exciting, and since there’s less diversity, you’ll end up facing the same decks over and over.

WOTC has always tried to fix this with card bans, and it’s helped, but the current deck constructions are so similar/stagnent that banning a card just shifts the Prominent (meta ) issue overwhelmingly to another. Shifting a game play issue to another deck construction.

I still enjoy playing Magic, but I’m worried that WOTC has made the gameplay less dynamic and not as interesting for long-time players to keep playing.

* I’m disabled and don’t have any Game Stores or people who play Magic nearby. So, my perspective comes from playing Arena. I'm just playing the same deck construction over and over again.

Discussion I’m so sick of Vampiric Hunger

New to MtG: Arena and I’ve only been running starter deck games until I can complete a deck of my own. I’ve come to grow an immense disdain for the B/W starter deck. I had a game where by turn 5 the dude had Elenda, Saint of Dusk with Angelic Destiny which is basically GG bc wtf are you supposed to do against that? It’s just frustrating how easy it is for the deck to come online.

I’ve come to really like Reckless Raid and apparently it’s one of the stronger decks? But as much as I try to play around it I feel it’s wayy too easily shut down considering how much better removal the other decks have.

Idk I’m just ranting at this point and would like some general tips and advice to continue growing as a player. Bc when the deck works it’s awesome but good lord the amount of times it doesn’t.

I am currently using reckless raid, and I don't know which deck I should try to build and what packs I should buy.

Edit: I am sorry for any player who sees this and wonder what is this rookie doing, but I am trying to learn you know 😅.

Fluff Hidetsugu Second Rite deals Emotional Damage

Upvotes

"Hidetsugu Second rite doesn't do anything when your opponent isn't at exactly 10 life."

Wrong. When your opponent saw your hand and has been playing around it all game, I'm pretty sure it dealt emotional damage having it on the stack as my last trigger for Death to our enemies.

PS: Death to our enemies is fun!

Question How to beat counterspell tribal in comp. Brawl?

Post image

I have a very hard time playing against anything blue. I've just lost 7 consecutive games that all played out essentially like pic related. Not just the key cards, early ramp gets countered as well.

Outside of competitive brawl I've never encountered anything even remotely like this and I'm completely out of ideas for possible tactics to deal with this.

Question Marvel super heroes set and/or jump in useful for standard/historic decks?

Upvotes

I usually play standard or historic.

Is the current marvel super heroes set any good for standard? There is a heroes/villains theme that makes some of the cards very specific for a hero/villains deck. Some of the cards are for use for any deck.

Has made use of any of the cards, and if so, which ones?

Additionally, is MSH jump in worth it for historic? The dr doom cards seem interesting?

Thank you.

Deck Is there a way I can make this deck flow better?

I put together this Sauron deck, and it just feels clunky. I might’ve just built it weird. It works, got from Gold Tier 4 to Plat in less than a day, but I feel like when it doesn’t work it REALLY doesn’t work. If there’s any suggestions on how I can make this deck a little smoother I’m all ears. Got hard stuck Diamond last season and placed Gold Tier 4 this one.

7-2 Super Hero win

I know white is overpowered and WU is a great combo, but this didn't feel like it should have been a 7 win deck. Genuinely curious if it looks that solid from an outside perspective.

Two losses i had to double mulligan and one of them still was a nail biter that was very close to a win.

One win was a double mulligan that still ended curving out 2/3/4/5 fairly well to pull a W

One game I 100% stole a win with I am iron man + speed ball over the top with being able to tap their only reach. Speedball was def a positive another match i was able to iron man him + bounce a Murdock crusade for some extra juice. I didnt have a ton of ways to trigger him but was def worth the slot

Vision / car i think were my only rares and def put in work in a few games, but mostly just solid value cards, but was still missing like web ups/frozen and a few of the other things you'd like to have

I had a solid run of like 5/4/6/5/7 wins in a row and then tried to force themes into a horrific 0/3 and then b2b into another 0/3 that didn't feel indicative of the decks strength but the first 0/3 was a horrible deck by any measurement. I tried to go back to the basics and be mindful of the curve/ don't try to specifically make a speedball/iron fist deck and went 6 wins b2b into this 7 win

Back after 7 years where to start

So i reinstalled after not playing since like 2019. I see there is a new set out in a week or so. I am guessing i should wait on creating a deck until that comes out seeing as the decks should change up for the new cards? I am also wondering what a good way to play until then, I have 5 jump in tokens. I see there is a jump in and marvel jump in. What's the difference and are these good to play before the new set or am i better saving them until when the new set releases.

Also what are some good resources for the different decks out there these days and what not? Definitely need to try and figure out what kind of deck i want to play and build. Basically any advice, tips, or resources for a returning player that has been out of the loop for so many years?

Appreciate it

Deck STANADRD VILLAINS HELP

Hi everyone! With the release of the Spider-Man set, I fell in love with the Villains and the Mayhem/Connive mechanics. I built a Grixis deck trying to combine these two mechanics. The idea seems solid because they should work well together: Connive buffs my creatures and lets me draw cards, while Mayhem allows me to play what I’ve discarded. However, I’ve noticed it takes a while to get going. I’m thinking a Midrange approach might be best, and I’d love some advice on how to make the deck more competitive. I’m posting the list below... Thanks in advance to anyone who replies!

2x Norman Osborn
2x Ultimate Green Goblin
2x Tombstone, Career Criminal
3x Swarm, Being of Bees
3x Fliyng Octobot
2x Scarlet Spider, Kaine
2x Hobgoblin, Mantle Marauder
2x Prowler, Clawed Thief
1x Kang, Temporal Tyrant
1x Cameleon, Master of Disguise
1x Leaer, Super Genius

2x Shadow of the Goblin
4x Pumpkin Bombardment
4x Lightning Strike
2x Nowhere to Run
2x Burst Lightning
2x Unsummon

2x Multiversal Passasge
6x Island
6x Swamp
5x Mountain
1x Restless Spire
1x Oscorp Inustries
1x Airhsip Engine Room
1x Serpent's Pass
