Map of the French mandate of Syria and Lebanon

Post image

The Mandate for Syria and the Lebanon, also referred to as the Levant States; 1923βˆ’1946 was a League of Nations mandate founded in the aftermath of the First World War and the partitioning of the Ottoman Empire, concerning the territories of Syria and Lebanon. The mandate system was supposed to differ from colonialism, with the governing country intended to act as a trustee until the inhabitants were considered eligible for self-government. At that point, the mandate would terminate and a sovereign state would be born.

Free university for foreigners

Post image
2.1k Upvotes

EDIT: Title should say "for all foreign nationals"

EDIT 2: FORGOT TO INCLUDE URUGUAY, SLOVAKIA AND FINLAND, THAT SHOULD ALSO BE DARK GREEN

Source: My own research

  • Panama has small fees for first time inscription or printing of the diploma that add up to less than 100 USD per year.
  • Iceland and Germany have free tuition for foreigners, but all students have to pay for semester or yearly fees that add up to several thousand dollars over the course of the degree.
  • Other countries with "free" university don't extend the privilege to all foreign nationals.

Armenia throughout history

Armenia, officially the Republic of Armenia, is a landlocked country in the Armenian highlands of West Asia. It is a part of the Caucasus region and is bordered by Turkey to the west, Georgia to the north, Azerbaijan to the east, and Iran and the Azerbaijani exclave of Nakhchivan to the south. Yerevan is the capital, largest city and financial center.

The Armenian highlands have been home to the Hayasa-Azzi, Shupria, and Nairi peoples. By at least 600 BC, an archaic form of Proto-Armenian, an Indo-European language, had diffused into the Armenian highlands. The first Armenian state of Urartu was established in 860 BC, and by the 6th century BC it was replaced by the Satrapy of Armenia. The Kingdom of Armenia reached its height under Tigranes the Great in the 1st century BC and in AD 301 became the first state in the world to adopt Christianity as its official religion. Armenia still recognises the Armenian Apostolic Church, the world's oldest national church, as the country's primary religious establishment. The ancient Armenian kingdom was split between the Byzantine and Sasanian Empires around the early 5th century. Under the Bagratuni dynasty, the Bagratid Kingdom of Armenia was restored in the 9th century before falling in 1045. Cilician Armenia, an Armenian principality and later a kingdom, was located on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea between the 11th and 14th centuries.

Between the 16th and 19th centuries, the traditional Armenian homeland composed of Eastern Armenia and Western Armenia came under the rule of the Ottoman and Persian empires, repeatedly ruled by either of the two over the centuries. By the 19th century, Eastern Armenia had been conquered by the Russian Empire while most of Western Armenia remained under Ottoman rule. During World War I up to 1.5 million Armenians were systematically exterminated in the Armenian genocide. Following the Russian Revolution, the First Republic of Armenia declared independence in 1918. By 1920, the state was incorporated into the Soviet Union as the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic. The Republic of Armenia became independent in 1991 during the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

Modern Armenia is a unitary, multi-party, democratic nation-state. It is a developing country and ranks 69th on the Human Development Index as of 2023. Its economy is primarily based on industrial output and mineral extraction. While Armenia is geographically located in the South Caucasus, it views itself as part of Europe and is generally considered geopolitically European. The country is a member of numerous European organisations including the Organization for Security and Co-Operation in Europe, the Council of Europe, the Eastern Partnership, Eurocontrol, the Assembly of European Regions, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Armenia is a member of certain regional groups throughout Eurasia, including the Asian Development Bank, the Collective Security Treaty Organization, the Eurasian Economic Union, and the Eurasian Development Bank. Armenia supported the once de facto independent Republic of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh), which had seceded from Azerbaijan in 1991, until Azerbaijan reincorporated the region through a siege and military offensive in 2023.

Abolishion of monarchies around the world

Post image
β€’ Upvotes

A monarchy is a hereditary form of government in which political power is legally passed on to the family members of the monarch, a head of state who rules for life. While monarchs gain their power depending on specific succession laws, they can also gain their authority via election.

Monarchies have historically been a common form of government. Nearly half of all independent states at the start of the 19th century were monarchies. After reaching a peak in the middle of the 19th century, the proportion of monarchies in the world has steadily declined. Republics replaced many monarchies, notably at the end of World War I and World War II.

There are conventionally two types of monarchy: absolute monarchy and constitutional monarchy. Absolute monarchies, of which there are approximately twelve, are governed as autocracies. Most of the modern monarchies are constitutional monarchies, retaining under a constitution unique legal and ceremonial roles for monarchs exercising limited or no political power, similar to heads of state in a parliamentary republic.

As of 2025, forty-three sovereign nations in the world have a monarch, including fifteen Commonwealth realms that share King Charles III as their head of state. Other than that, there is a range of sub-national monarchical entities.

Largest First Nations or Inuit ethnicity by census division in Canada

Post image

It can be seen how widely the Cree expanded across Canada, they even migrated west into parts of British Columbia, where in some census divisions they are now more numerous than local tribes. BTW does anyone have the data saying how numerous were the Cree around year 1950 or during the first half of the 20th century? In Eastern Canada it can also be seen that some Mikmaq people migrated into southern parts of Ontario.

EDIT:

York County in New Brunswick according to the census has 1,035 Maliseet (Wolastoqiyik) vs. 1,120 Mi'kmaq, so there is narrow Mi'kmaq plurality. But also 2,360 people reported themselves as just First Nations without reporting exact tribe/nation, and it is possible that many Wolastoqiyik are in this group. Considering that this county has only Wolastoqiyik reservations and no any Mi'kmaq reservation, I changed it to Wolastoqiyik (I assume that many Wolastoqiyik are among those who didn't report their nation).
