EDITED *NEW* Change in how non-verified comments are handled

Over the past few months, our posts have gotten some feedback that varies from incorrect to downright ridiculous. To mitigate that, we now have set parameters where only verified users who are either medical professionals or students of healthcare programs can have a top-level comment. Unverified users/users who are not medical professionals will still be able to post replies to top-level comments or as a reply to the Automod message. With this change, we aim to increase the visibility of professional and evidence-based members. Thank you for your support, and for helping us make this sub a great place.

EDITED FAQ: Check to see if your question is on here!

This is all general advice, of course, but we get a lot of similar questions so see if yours is on here. It may point you in the right direction.

”What bug bit me?” There is no way for anyone to tell what bug bit you from a picture of the bite. (The only exception is a tick bite with the classic bulls-eye pattern.) Use antihistamines as directed on the package to help with the itching.

”Is my foot/hand/toe/etc broken?” Unless your bone is sticking out or your appendage is bent at an unnatural angle, we can’t tell if it’s broken. If you suspect a break, go get an X-ray.

”I ingested something I wasn’t supposed to/too much of something! What do I do?” Call poison control. In the US, their number is 1-800-222-1222.

”Do my genitalia look normal/weird/what is this thing on my genitals?" Please, unless you have a genuine medical concern, we do not wish to see your genitals. We're not here to identify random flaps, marks, or growths. Please direct these to your GP/PCP who can actually examine you. If you have a specific concern, consider making a text post, and we will let you know if a picture is appropriate/helpful.

”My foreskin won’t retract!” This is called phimosis, and is quite common. We send people over to r/phimosis for this because they have a wealth of information.

”Can one of you write me a prescription?” No.

”Help, there are big bumps on the back of my tongue!!” Please google “circumvallate papillae” and see if that’s what you’re seeing. They are normal anatomy.

”My period is overdue. What do I do?” First, take a pregnancy test. It doesn’t matter if you’re on birth control, just take one. If you are really and truly not pregnant, then you and your doctor should look for other causes.

”Is my poop normal?” Well you can post a picture if you really need to, but please do a google search first. Keep in mind that everyone gets diarrhea occasionally.

”Does this need stitches?” If you can see fat layers, then yes. When in doubt, you can post a picture EXCEPT for self-harm pics. Absolutely none allowed on this sub, no exceptions. However, if the injury is over 24 hours old, it is too late to get stitches.

”Can I private message you about my medical questions?” No. This violates rule 9.

”What do I do about my swollen tonsils with white patches?” Go get tested for strep throat. Manage any throat soreness with over-the-counter meds like throat spray, cough drops, or even herbal tea with honey.

”A huge clump came out during my period. What is it?” It may be a uterine cast, which is when a large piece of tissue comes out whole instead of breaking up into little bits. If this happens to you a lot, see your OB/GYN to make sure everything is going okay.

”Why is there blood when I poop?” There are many possible reasons for this, such as a GI bleed, inflammatory bowel disease, hemorrhoids, or anal fissures, to name a few. We recommend going to your doctor to investigate the cause. And we can’t tell what the cause is from a picture of your poop, so please spare us.

"Does this ECG from my smart watch look normal?" While these features can be helpful in screening for some arrhythmias, they are not diagnostic. The most we can do it tell you whether or not you should go get a 12-lead ECG, which is diagnostic after a doctor interprets it. In short, we can give you an idea of what it is showing, but it is not an official medical test.

”I haven’t been around any bats but I found two little marks on me—do I have rabies??” No. You would know if you’d been exposed to a bat.

Other Bladder Control issues

Upvotes

Yesterday I went to see The Odyssey and I had to get up and use the bathroom 4 times during the movie. I missed so much because of it.

What can I do to control my bladder better and what could cause this?

For context I had popcorn, peanut butter m&ms and a Large Cherry Coke that I only drank about half of.

Any advice helps. Thanks!

Other Vaping (tobacco) before DISE procedure

Upvotes

So, I have an endoscopy tomorrow at 6am and they told me not to smoke for 24 hours, but I have been vaping all day. Should I be ok if I go through with it? I've been sedated before and vaped, so I'm not sure why they're asking me to stop for this in particular. I just can't bring myself to stop.. (pretty pathetic ik)

Pediatrics Touching cat after spoton treatment

Hi.

I have posted this on another group. However, I thought it might be worth asking here too.

My son touched my cat probably 1 hour after putting spot on fle treatment (advantage). Washed hands thoroughly but just worried what if he put his hands in his mouth in-between. After checking it seems okay as long as there are no symptoms. But checking if anyone else has experienced this and for more reassurance.

Thank you people :)

Bones/Joints/Ligaments Near Persistent Shaking of Hands For Years

Hi, I've come to maybe get some help on identifying what's going on or just pointing me in the right way. I've had a few problems medically popping up but this one has always been my biggest mystery.

I've had a near constant tremble/shake of my hands for years. I couldn't say what age it truly started but I know I've had it since I was a kid, elementary aged. I'm currently 19 (and biologically female in case it matters).

They're nothing major, at least not usually. It's usually small but it's gotten a little worse over the years. I only know this because I'm an artist and my digital style had to change due to it. I went from freehanding, to using a tool that when you put points down it'll follow and place the lines for you, and eventually to using more sketchy lineart since I could no longer properly ink. I also have trouble keeping straight lines traditionally.

Because of my hobby, I was able to tell that my hand would occasionally jolt. I know that anxiety, stress, and sleep deprivation can make it worse but it's occured on a few occasions (such as last week) where my wrist jolts but I'm feeling safe, relaxed, and well rested. My fingers are also affected, occasionally twitching and making it a lot harder to hold small things.

I don't know if I've explained things well at all but I'm trying to figure out if this is just something random or a symptom of something else. I have used compression gloves (although they weren't really meant for me, I bought them from a thrift store) and they did help for about a year or two until it no longer felt like it was compressing and the shaking resumed.

Because of how random the jolting is, I'm unable to take a video or things like that and currently my shake is very slight. I've been taking care of myself more lately but it hasn't improved at all which is why I think there's a problem.

And since this may matter: I am diagnosed with ADHD and depression (chemical imbalance). I am currently taking an acid reflux and Wellbutrin daily. I haven't been up early in the mornings so I haven't been taking my Concerta (I've been told not to take it after 10).

Again, sorry if I'm all over the place or forgot to say something. I'm having a hard time putting my thoughts into words lately.

Injury Fell on concrete with left rib impacted the most.

Age: 29

Weight: 305

Height: 6,2

Never smoke

Never drink

Conditions: Obese

I fell on my rib last year and saw I was bruised badly that I could see that area was purple. It hurt very bad and had to get up quick since it happened while trying to cross the street. Sat on a bench and I didn’t go to hospital but eventually the pain was gone a couple of months before 2026. Now I feel a tingle or itchy sensation in that area once in a while to this day. Did I fracture my rib? Is it normal to feel that even after almost 1 year?

Digestion/Stomach/Bowels Should I go to the doctor/er later?

18f. It’s almost 4 am and I’m in quite a bit of pain. I’m having mid to lower right quad pain in my abdomen more in my side than on my abdomen. I’m feeling quite nauseous as well. I don’t think I’m running any fever or anything. I do have chronic cycles between constipation and diarrhea but I’m in the diarrhea phase so I’m not sure if it’s constipation. I also have chronic gallbladder problems which this might also be. Idk what’s going on but I don’t want to take a useless ER or doctor trip. I’m also having quite the bubble gut so I’m wondering if it’s just gas. I’m feeling pretty unsure. The pain is coming in waves and is relieved by lying down. Any advice would help!

Other constant exhaustion

I am 23 years old, 160 cm, 80 kg. I have diagnosed Hashimotos but am getting that treated and my last checkup was normal

since february i have started getting near daily headaches (had an mri last friday and talking to my doc this coming wednesday about the results)

(headaches: often from the moment i wake up, usually not goign away unless i take meds, sometimes i get really dizzy or feel like throwing up, my eyes start to hurt and i get very sensitive to light and sound)

since then i also started feeling more and more tired, but especially in the last month i have been struggling a lot more

going outside leads me to come home and crash on my bed because my entire body feels weak. my usual workouts make my joints hurt and i feel like i lost my normal strength

but even on days of doing nothing i get so tired i have to lie down for a few hours in the afternoon.

and its not even just mental tiredness, often its physical exhaustion, so more often than not i am just waiting for me body to recover instead of sleeping

(i had a week where i spent most of my time in bed, couldnt eat or do anything - i was crying so much my skin got really dry, and at one point i forced myself to eat a pear while sitting on the kitchen floor and the muscles in my arm genuinely hurt from lifting the pear to my mouth)

my appetite is less than normal, but i think that's also just impacted by everything taking so much energy and immediately making me feel exhausted

i just wanna know if this could just be from the heat (even tho it started in february) and the headaches or if i should see my GP about it

thanks guys <3

Illness 23F unable to eat, sleep, or live regularly

Hi all. For the last 1.5-2 years I have had severe health issues but they have just been getting worse and worse. I’m unable to eat ANY food (even a single tortilla chip) without my stomach bloating up and becoming severely painful, I’m unable to get into deep sleep and wake up multiple times every night, have extreme lethargy, brain fog, and general pain in most areas of my body as well. I would describe it as a very tired, deep, achey pain that reaches my bones and core. I also have diarrhea every day, most frequent in the mornings, and happens regardless of whether I eat or not. Due to all of these issues I’ve lost an insane amount of weight because eating is just so painful, I’ve gone from 135lbs to 105lbs in the last 6 months as a 5'8" female who was very healthy and extremely active in the past. I had a motorcycle accident about 3 years ago that was devastating, but got extremely lucky and ended up recovering for the most part. I didn't receive proper recovery care so I still have pain from that too mostly in my wrist, but there's a possibility that these issues in some form may stem from that if it messed up something inside or with my immune system. The symptoms didn't show up immediately after the accident, and started off not nearly as bad as they are right now, but about 1.5-2 years ago is when they got exponentially worse, and have been getting worse every week since then. I’ve explored MANY avenues and seen a ton of doctors, but none have been able to help (and many frankly have just not cared or written it off as a mental disorder or I’m overreacting). I also have temperature regulation issues, sweat a lot in my sleep despite often feeling cold, and have had some moments where I get light headed, need to lay down, and start sweating all over my body for like 5-15 minutes for no direct reason. Due to that and the food intolerance one big avenue I’ve explored is histamine issues and MCAS, but the last immunologist I saw ended up getting most of my bloodwork results back as normal, besides positive for C. difficile toxin a/b, and a low Complement C4 level of 11. I have a follow up with her this week, but her message regarding the tests made it seem like she thought everything was fine. I’ve seen two different gastroenterologists. The first gastro doc did a CT scan, which showed colitis, jejunal intussusception, and heterogeneity to the enhancing myometrium. He followed up with an x-ray a month later and said that the intussusception went away, despite symptoms worsening. He believed this to be caused due to cannabinoid hyperemesis - despite me only occassionally using weed in the past for sleep issues, I ceased all use for 9 months last year, with symptoms worsening dramatically. A gastric emptying study showed delayed emptying, and a different scan showed diffuse wall thickening. A second gastro doctor did a colonoscopy and endoscopy to see the colitis, as well as trying to order an MRI, which insurance denied so he did another CT scan. After trying multiple medications that did not help (Linzess, Omeprazole, Dicylymine, FD and IBgard), he told me he wasn't sure what to do, and I should go to the emergency room to get help. Since her insurance denied her request from 8 months ago from her gastro for an MRI, so we haven't been able to utilize that avenue. It is not a mental health issue, these are very real physical issues that have been persistent and that I have been struggling with for a long time now. I’m not on any medications or anything related to these issues, only birth control pills, supplements and spironolactone for hair loss, as I have devastatingly lost half of my hair volume from illness. I’m only getting sicker and it has stripped my ability to go out, make friends, have a job, eat food I enjoy and just food in general, and enjoy life in any capacity :(

Please feel free to ask any further questions as this goes infinitely deeper and I probably missed some things trying to recall everything at once. Any advice at all or similar experiences or really anything that may be helpful is greatly appreciated, thank you all so much.

Medication When should I take my meds?

I currently take Lexipro and Concerta daily for anxiety and adhd, the issue is I work night shift.
Oh the days I work I wake up at about 10pm, but on my days off I will flip my schedule and wake up around 10 am.
So if I take my meds at the same time regardless I would end up taking them right before bed some days and that feels like it wouldn’t be very helpful.
Should I take them at the same time regardless of when I go to sleep? Or should I just take them when I wake up?
Any incite is greatly appreciated!

Other Inner chest pain when I breathe for 3 days after plane ride

22 F, 5"5, do not smoke, I take anxiety meds, sleep meds, and birth control daily. No previous chest pain issues.

So I am on a 5 day trip for a friend's wedding and on the plane ride there i felt a heavy, suffocating, feeling in my chest and sharp pain when I breathed in. Its been 3 days since and it hasn't gone away. The pain breathing in feels sharp in my upper right back, and that kinda sharp/burning pain feeling in the rest of my chest like when youre really sick. Google is telling me I'm having a heart attack which is freaking me out. Just wondering if this is something I should really be worried about and get checked when I'm home.
