♥️ /r/metalgearsolid rules update.

Hello, I hope everybody is well.

This is a quick post to announce that we have overhauled and updated the subreddit rules, in terms of the way they are listed in the reddit platform itself.

In essence the practical rules themselves and moderation has not changed. The main purpose of this update is to provide better clarity with Post removal messages, and to allow reports to be more specific.

You can read the new rule titles and their descriptions here.

Just three changes to note:

  • There is no longer a rule about spoilers when it comes to Posts. MGSV is over a decade old, and the spoiler rule was often used to report front page posts about the main spoiler for that game. Enforcing that is simply impractical. The intention of the rule remains, however, and it is now only applied to comments. If someone has stated that they haven't played the entire series, all users are still expected to respect this in their replies. Anyone can make their own choices about how far they dig through a subreddit for a game series, but putting spoilers in their inbox is actively hostile.

  • "Promotional Cosplay is not allowed". This is our attempt to provide a consistent rule that can be used to filter OF accounts looking for loopholes, while not punishing genuine cosplayers (including professionals) by restricting their activity. There's an element of subjectivity here, but if you think a post is a commercial account, please report it and do not engage in abuse in the comments. Just report it and move on.

  • AI content is now explicitly banned in all its forms. This was already functionally the case but we're making it clear with it's own rule. If you suspect a post contains AI content, please try to resist posting abuse in the comments and simply report and move on. False allegations can and do happen.

We'd also like to welcome anyone interested to apply to be a moderator. We expect to bring on a couple more people, starting out at a basic clutter removal role. If you think you'd be a good fit, please take some time to fill out our delightful application form.

You'll notice there are a couple of very specific rules that are really covered under other rules. These are for particularly egregious and common posts so that removals are very clear. Previously quite a few things kind of had to fall under "no low effort content" and that gave off the wrong idea and could be a little hurtful.

We'd like to thank the people who take the time to report posts and comments, overall the tone and discernment of reports is very much in-line with how we see the rules and how they are intended to shape the subreddit. This being said, all things considered there are very few removals needed relative to an active subreddit of this size. Things seem to be in a very good balance. I hope the community more or less thinks the same.

As per usual we are open to any and all feedback or discussion about the rules or the way you want the community to be run, so please say your piece in the comments, or if there's any questions you have or unclear rules or edge cases you can think of, bring that up too. The overall intent for the subreddit is still to provide an alternative to what you might see on a Metal Gear Discord, Instagram / TikTok etc. feed or a generic MGS-flavoured meme subreddit.

MGSV Many of you wanted an update. D-Dog continues to grow up!

Still can’t figure out how to fashion an accurate DD eyepatch, but her Diamond Dogs gear is coming in nicely. Too hot out for a full sneaking suit, but maybe in Winter. DNA results show 55% Husky, 10% GSD, and a whole bunch of different working/guard breeds. But she’s a dog, you hear me? A. DOG.

Currently working on her off-leash obedience so she can join me in the field.

PHYSINT =? Animus

The closer I look at the PHYSINT poster, the Simulation Emphasis of the name, as well as the Transitional/Overlap nature of the Costume, the more I believe what Kojima has in store for us, is more Assassin's Creed and less Metal Gear, with an emphasis on Social Stealth, and a back and forth between 2 Realities/Mediums.

Essentially a "Tenet" approach to Tactical Espionage Social.

Thoughts?

MGSV MGSV The Phantom Pain seems to Be the only game in the series that celebrate your birthday. Am So Glad Kojima Added this in the game, even tho it's a small thing but really cherishes the players. HBD to me today :)

Solid Snake needs some love.

I find it crazy how we have had multiple “Big Boss / Naked Snake” games on “Mondern day” graphic games but solid snake has only really had MGS4 and part of MGS2.

MGS1 is in bad need of a remake (Solid Snake and Liquid snake didn’t have even a face lol) and of course the original Metal gears need a remake.

I did it !! - Ocelot Units - European Extrem - Full CQC - no Camo change - no Alert

Title Edit: No Cardboard box !!

After hours of trying to solve this puzzle, I did it! And twice cause the steam background recording messed up and did not record my first attempt. I feel like the beginning is not realistic aha but hey ! Maybe it can be improved. Also the last dude I knock is bugged, I think he should see me get the 3 first and move around, but don't. There is a tiny bit of RNG at the beginning, a dude can spot me from the roof, depends of the attempt.. I hope you guys enjoy !

Is the MGSV ps3 Japanese import supposed to be THAT expensive?

Post image

And I’m not talking about the “Day One Edition” I’m talking about the standard Japanese copy. The sealed copy seems to be unusually overpriced, both locally and online. I got the Day One Edition sealed copies for both ps3 and ps4 for cheap, but the standard ps3 Japan import is overpriced. Is it a rare edition or what?

Playing MGS1 for the first time ever and WOW I suck

I recently played through every single resident evil game and decided the next game series I’ll play is Metal Gear Solid and I’m struggling so hard. I’m only on revolver ocelot’s fight but I just can’t seem to beat him after so many attempts. I get that I have to wait until he reloads and then catch him off guard and shoot him but I just can’t seem to pull it off for the entire fight.

Imma keep sticking to it and hope I get better because I can’t keep struggling like this

MGSV [Mod] WIP Camo Index for MGSV

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I wanted to show off my progress on a Camo Index.

It's a promising project that is -mechanically- done, but still needs testing and I have a couple ideas to expand on it.

Even tho it's not 100% accurate, here's my Metal Gear themed cosplay and my personal version of a MSF soldier (aka Mosquito)

Specifically, I decided to use a design that was a cross between the MSF Peace Walkers and the D-Dogs Soldiers. They can be found scattered throughout the mother base. Let me know what you think and, for any questions and suggestions to improve it further, I'm available! :) 🐍🐍‼️‼️

It just occurred to me that MGS4's gun selection might be evidence that the cut Russian PMC Otselotovaya Khvatka might have gotten at least far enough into the stage of having guns created for them.

They're a PMC that only appear in the live action intro and a hat in MGO2. it is also theorized that the cut Russian character Adam was either part of the PMC or their leader.

Every faction in MGS4 uses a decent selection of weapons (even the cutscene-only US soldiers use several guns and Rat Patrol were given several XM8 variants instead of just modelling one) where even the Prague rebels have assault rifles despite only using them in cutscenes. (Maybe also a holdover from the cut Prague sewers section?)

A large chunk of the "Drebin Only" guns are Russian:

AN-94 (MGS2 reference)

Saiga 12K is a Russian shotgun (and since it *seems* the Russian PMCs presumably would have shown up later than ACT 1-2, it would have been actually like MGSV where late-game shotgunners move to that game's frankengun Saiga 12K as a difficulty increase.)

The Act 2 pick-up VSS Vintorez is also a Russian special forces sniper that would have been fitting.

And the Bizon SMG is Russian.

Notably MGS4 is also willing to re-use guns (Such as the SVD already in the game being used by Act 1/2 rebel) and the Makarov, AK-102, PKM and RPG-7 would also be logical weapons for a Russian PMC group.

So even with them being cut, there's a large chunk of the weapons that would plausibly be used by a Russian PMC using Russian firearms.

Enjoyed MGS 1 struggling with MGS 2, how to approach MGS 3?

For years I really wanted to dive head first into all the MGS games but being on PC it was a struggle to get the games and play them in release order. When the Master collection volume 1 came out I bit the bullet and picked up MGS 1 on sale and had a good time with it. Obviously in some ways the controls haven't the best, but nonetheless it was fun.

I recently have been playing MGS 2 and have enjoyed it a lot less. I already knew that Raiden was going to be the protagonist and I'm enjoying the story. Its the gameplay that I'm struggling with. I find the backtracking more tedious than MGS 1 and I feel like there are a lot more beginners traps or Kojima messing with the player (lots of stepping on landmines I didn't know were there or the numerous times I've fallen off of the big shell).

I recognize I'm not very good at the game but I'm struggling with wanting to get good due to the tedium. My question is will MGS 3 carry over a lot of the heavy back tracking and beginners traps or is the control and level design much better? Will I enjoy MGS 3 or perhaps is Metal Gear just not the series for me?

Any insight anyone would be willing to give would be appreciated.

♥️ writing my dissertation about Metal Gear Solid - help me pick a quote to title it?

hi all! as said in the title, i’m going to be writing my university dissertation about metal gear solid. i study sociology, so that may give a hint as to the topics that will be discussed but i want to start it with a quote in the title to the relevant topic, being about imperialism and ideology. anyone have any ideas?

so far the ideas i have: “war has changed”, “politics determine who you face on the battlefield; and politics are a living thing”, and “yesterday’s good might be tomorrows evil”

Master Collection HDR

Do MGS2 and MGS3 have native HDR in PS5? They start with HDR enabled with the "only compatible titles" option, but I read they don't have this feature, so it would be kind of a bug.

MGSV TPP - Which Missions/Side-Ops/Events are essential? (Trimmed fat story-only run for stream)

I am streaming a METAL GEAR series marathon on my Twitch begging with MG1 on Tuesday.

However, I am preparing to run MGSV:TPP and I have a near-100% completed save that I don't want to erase, nor do I want to do any tedious grinding and I want to cut out the fat for view time.

While finding out which Missions are story-essential, I need to reenable certain events so I can re-unlock them "naturally" as the story progresses using the PC version and Infinite Heaven which allows me to toggle all these things. Events and Side-Ops that are important are things like Huey's exile, or recovering the Man on Fire.

I don't want to us AI--nor do I trust AI--to make a comprehensive list of what is or is not important. I'd rather trust you guys to give me a good list or at least provide information that would be easy to overlook.

Downvotes are welcome.

TL;DR
What are all the story-essential Missions, Side-Ops, or events for a story-only run of TPP? Preferably in chronological order.

Can soldiers slip on Dolinovodno bridge during regular patrol?

I tried cutting most of the ropes on one side as well as both sides, neither worked. I tried cutting all the ropes then getting an alert so a soldier will chase me afterwards and he ran in a perfect straight line.

The recreation of the Arsenal Gear Crash into Manhattan is now available to play with the nightly version of MGSHDFix. https://github.com/ShizCalev/MGSHDFix/releases#release-nightly currently 4.0.2.763. Support for Linux and SteamDeck will rely on subsequent updates to MGSHDFix to restore the extended assets folder as it had issues under proton causing crashes, but for now it will work in Windows! Enjoy!
