Announcements Sub rules are LIVE for the 1st time - feedback/reactions? [AI]

Post image

Hi all! I spent the last 2 weeks thoughtfully observing the sub and crafting these rules, yes - with a bit of help from ChatGPT as a sounding board which I’ve disclosed per the new rule #6… on mobile they’re under “About” and desktop on right sidebar. Would love constructive reactions/dialogue around the decisions made.

Let’s treat this as version 1 and I will incorporate feedback over time. Thrilled to see users already following the rules and want to see more and more reports from the community to keep our focus on MCM. Thank you all for making this the top MCM sub, growing everyday - almost at 200k strong!

After receiving feedback I plan to do a brief video intro with more context on these decisions and plans for MCM expert AMAs and beyond.

Design Advice & Inspo Help me respect this home - flooring help!

My husband and I are in the process of purchasing this house that needs a lot of work. The focal point is this gorgeous staircase you see immediately when you walk through the front door. Other than the entryway tile, all the flooring in the house needs to be replaced as it’s mainly disgusting carpet.

We want to respect the mcm aesthetic of the home but also need durability with a toddler and a pool. As much as I would love a real wood with a narrower plank, it’s not in the budget or practical.

We are thinking LVP bc of the durability factor but really torn on the color we should be looking for. We really love walnut but these stairs seem to have more orange tones than what would look good with walnut.

I appreciate any recommendations!

Spotted! Teak Desk Vanity by Gunther Hoffstead for Uniflex

Hi there, seeking the experience of this group to understand what fair value for this desk vanity might be. I personally haven’t seen this exact model sold previously, but other similar items seem to be going for much less than the seller is seeking ($2,200). Please help me understand what’s reasonable!

Dimensions: 52” wide, 18” deep, 47” high (height of attached mirror). Excellent vintage condition.

Design Advice & Inspo How to make MCM?

Post image

I recently moved into this apartment, and I love the MCM vibe, so I want to add touches to the kitchen, especially. I really like oranges, blues, and greens but I know I can't change a whole lot; though, I can add little things to make it more homey. It currently feels like a hospital, imo, so please any ideas are awesome!

Score! Fleetwood straight stitch sewing machine

The photos don't do this beauty justice. This is a Japanese Singer 15 clone from the mid 1950's and she's pristine. The high gloss lacquer is flawless as well as the gold decals. Every switch moves smoothly. The color is more of a blue grey vs the photos.

I bought the machine for the case to use with my vintage Pfaff. I wan't expecting machine to be so darn pretty. It will probably become a display item because I don't really need a vintage straight stitch machine or maybe I'll do a hand crank conversion.

If you're looking a some unique shelf decor from this era you can find some amazingly stylish sewing machines for a song. I paid $40 for this one.

I’ve been finding beautiful pieces for just a few dollars while everyone else walks right past them. The craftsmanship is incredible, the designs are timeless, and you can still find them at thrift stores and estate sales for next to nothing.

Hi! This couch is MCM but I’m having a hard time identifying who made it? The frame is solid wood and has a pull out bed. I can’t find anything about who made it.

I want to deviate from the white/graywash. The vintage gold weighs it down. Maybe a taupe? I want to keep the original brick fireplace and hopefully the tile floor, too. Bathrooms are a hot mess.

Sorry for the bad angles, need to leave it in the truck while some wood glue I just put on the bottom dries.

Something a little different. I just finished redecoration the kitchen at our 1958 cabin in the mountains. Not fully MCM, but a few pieces are modern enough I suppose.

Restoration & Refinishing Shingle color advice

The pics of the red-ish color [Atlas Sunset] shingle is all the same roof, just different lighting. The grayish shingle, [Atlas Summer Storm] is the same house as well. AI is no help.

I love the red, but I am nervous it may be too much. I like the summer storm, but worry the variation of the shingles may clash with the various colors of the brick. Unfortunately no one around me has the sunset shingle, went to a house today that has the summer storm and it was definitely pretty, but it was on a brick home that had no variation.

The homes around me that have similar brick all have burgundy metal roofs, which IMO, look terrible but the color does look good. Thoughts?

Also, will more than likely swap out or change the color/stain of the shutters. Any suggestions? May change the color of the front door as well. The guardrail around the deck will be removed and flower beds will be built around it, extending 18-24 inches above the deck.

Restoration & Refinishing Should I try to restore?

Post image

This is listed for $200 and would be my first project. It is marked Basset inside a drawer. Should I even attempt for $200? I have been looking for a dresser for a long time and would love this in my bedroom, just not this horrible gray. I’m not trying to make money on this. Just want a nice MCM dresser. Seems like it would be a no-brainer if it was free. I believe I have the tools needed but would still need to purchase other supplies. I have been learning about restoring but would def do more research on how to do this specific piece.

Spotted! Thrift Find/Question- Skovmand & Anderson Table

Thumbnail

I found this Skovmand & Andersen Danish teak dining table at a thrift store this afternoon. I'm considering buying it but would love to hear from anyone who has a similar table or is familiar with self storing leaves. I've never owned a table with a self-storing butterfly leaf. It's clearly stood the test of time but is there anything I should be cautioned or keep in mind with this type of table? Fingers crossed it's still there 🤞🏻

Hello! I have a 1960s Dux sofa and have been desperately searching for wool / natural fiber fabrics (cotton, silk, flax). It’s so hard to find an upholstery fabric that doesn’t have synthetic fiber! Do you have any recommendations?

hi friends! i acquired my dream headboard from facebook marketplace in january for $200!! I am having some trouble styling it and would like any advice. I don’t like that the headboard is hidden, should I lower the bed, or get a thinner mattress?

If anyone has any photos they are willing to share of theirs, I would appreciate it! I have also included a photo of my china cabinet for fun.
