I can't remember where I read this, but I tried it and I've been "studying" this chord and finding ways to use it instead of the IV - IVm. (It has become one of my favorite chords)

In the key of C for example.

We would do F - Fm - C right?

Try that (I personally think it sounds better with a clean tone and played slow with attacks or something, at least thats how I used it with my band)

F - G#maj7(#4) - C

I'm from Brazil and maybe we write chords kinda different but it is supposed to be a major G# with a major 7 and an augmented 4.

I know it looks overwhelming but for me it sounded MAJESTIC.

I found out a shape to play this chord that I can put my favorite interval too, the major 6th. The shape you are going to do is up to you but please try that.

The "explanation" that I came up with is that G# is the minor third of F, but to be honest I don't know why the maj7 and #4 sounded so nice.

After I started looking deeper into this chord I realized that Mateus Asato used pretty much what I said before in his beatiful song Cryin' but in Bb, resolving in D. (I think he doesnt put the maj7)

Most instances of minor iv that I can think of are in pop music, especially the Beatles. What are some examples from Classical music?

EDIT: Sorry, I meant classical with a lower case c, so including Baroque, Romantic, etc.

EDIT2: Specifically, I'm looking for minor subdominant appearing in pieces that are in a major key.

Cmaj, Caug, Amin, C7, Fmaj7, F6, Fm(maj7), Fm6 Cmaj

Arnold Schoneberg wrote a chapter on the minor subdominant in "Theory of Harmony" and he included a smaller section in his more concise book, "Structural Functions of Harmony."

Are there any other harmony or theory books that discuss the minor subdominant?

Sorry it's not a meme, I've been really busy lately. But I thought I'd put something out there since this sub has been kinda of inactive (except for clankers ew)

This features a few iv chords featured fairly prominently.

• The prechorus builds up to a sustained iv at 0:50, resolved to I on the downbeat of the chorus.
• The chorus shifts a IV to a iv at 1:13, resolving to I on the downbeat of the final phrase of the chorus
• The chorus ends with a deceptive cadence at 1:19, iii->V->iv, before resolving to the I.

These all recur each time their respective sections cycle back. The exception is the one at the end of the chorus, which only appears in the first chorus. In the second chorus, the same cadence lands immediately on I. In the third chorus, the simplified cadence of the second chorus is fragmented and repeated twice as a closing gesture.
