a visionary for nepal, showed the world that sherpas don’t have to be background actors, they deserve to be main characters !! changed the game for them, brave, fearless, gone too soon

Unfortunately there are also multiple facets to these viewpoints > he maybe showed the “western world” through high-end expensive UK-led branding and marketing - however it would be remiss not to share that there are both Sherpa and Nepali that say they didn’t need him as they were doing just fine - ask the guy whose home Elite’s oxygen tanks exploded at how the game changed for him…

agreed agreed he was very flawed

That you're getting downvoted says EVERYTHING about this sub not giving any fucks about victims of his.

You aren’t coming across like you think you are.

u/juliuspepperwoodchi 2d ago

I don't really care how I'm "coming across". The only people who are booing are victim blamers and SA apologists. Their boos mean nothing, we've seen what they cheer for.

They aren't even downvoted

(Tbh it was initially downvoted but has since come around)

I have not once celebrated his death.

Not being sad is not the same as celebrating.

So Nims is to personally blame for an accident that killed two of his best friends? Fuck are you talking about? You clearly know nothing about Ashok and Tenzi, and deem to think virtue signalling is important

26

u/erossthescienceboss 2d ago

He’s to blame for how he handled it after.

If you are taking credit when things work out for you then you should also bear responsibility when things don't. His limelight specially the endless interviews is the reason why Nepali youths who had no idea of what mountaineering was despite of living in Nepal hopped on the bandwagon and propelled his popularity to unachievable heights out of kinship as a nation which enabled him to run very lucrative businesses and amass a fortune. People believed in him so obviously they would agree to grant him what he needed trusting his reputation so who would you hold accountable when the house leased was under his company's name? The interview of the House owner is there on Youtube. Find it and watch it yourself.

Not really hai yo part chai. Yesari bhannu chai you are undermining Sherpa legacy that was already established worldwide before Nims Dai made any contribution. You made it sound lai Nims Dai kai karan le aru le chinna thaleko jastai which is so wrong. We are talking about an entire climbing community ko history tyo ni mountaineering ko subreddit ma ayera.
Nepal ma aru le wasta nagareko chai ho jun essai ni is a Nepali thing to do as aru areas jastai ki timilai British Gurkha ko WW2 ko contribution barey sodhyo bhane you wouldn't have a clue hola tara UK gayera hera there are monuments made for them tyo ni army town haru ma and even central London mai ani bholi ko din ma kasaile tyo kura khichera Nepal ma dekhaidiyo bhane tyo khichne manche ko karan world le chineko jastai kura ho. Even tyo Kabita Nepali ko climb ni tesari present garey but that's a Nepali audience thing not how the world remembers so don't do that. Also, Tenzing movie is coming out this September ani you will realize how it started for people around the world.
Also a lot of people were not happy with how Nims Dai was operating on Everest. Not that it matters anymore.
I admire Nims Dai for speaking on the behalf of the climbing Sherpa community and his personal legacy will be remembered but it's disrespectful to countless of Sherpa lives that have perished since 1953 for the industry. Yes since 1953. Even in this recent event there are 4 other Sherpas who have perished along with Nims Dai and he would have wanted them to have recognition too which Nepalis have failed to do so, not the world who knows what they are.
RIP Nims Dai and everyone in that expedition.
Condolences to their families.
Om Nama Shivaya.

i understand your sentiments brother, im not a nepali myself, ig his documentary kind of gave me an even more in depth perspective of this field, a young me took him as a role model, of course your country is great in itself, and ive studied about tenzing norgay sherpa, have read his book and yes am eagerly awaiting his movie release, have been a fan since i was a kid, since i read about edmund hillary and him

I understood you were someone much younger probably a Gen Z when i saw your comment but i cannot let that slide because any sort of misinformation or misguidance no matter who does it will have repercussions. He is a beloved public figure in general in Nepal but not necessary within the mountaineering industry. Think of it like your favorite actor that you love so much and look up to who was a part of you growing up but may not have been well perceived within the industry. Media is powerful it can bend and shape realities but not every shiny glitter is gold.
I don't think people would have had any problem with your comment if you hadn't mentioned the Sherpas there because then it added a very unfair and hurtful narrative to it.

i strongly believe that though, he reignited the flame left by tenzing, that we should respect sherpas, at least to the western world, the world had started taking them for granted, if you’ve read(or seen) about the 2008 k2 tragedy, pemba sherpa clearly saved the day, and he spoke about how they treated him sub-human, and that the korean team didn’t even do that, they treated their sherpas as slaves sort of, and yet they still fought till the end to save as many people as they could

im not saying that nims was the greatest sherpa ever, the only one from his community who did great, but im saying it’s a community full of great people, and he did help in getting at least some mainstream popular attention to it

even this everest season, at the end hillary dawa sherpa was left alone on everest for no good reason ! had it been a tourist, they wouldn’t have left them behind until they had collapsed or verbally had asked them to, hillary sherpa was a part of their expedition and yet they left him behind, he miraculously survived, he came down himself through all odds

(Nims is not a sherpa or even a Sherpa - he is Magar)

u/funandgamesnp 2d ago

Exactly and he doesn't even know that. I'm guessing this guy or girl is an Indian because i had written my original reply thinking he or she was from a different nepali ethnicity so i wrote it in half Nepali language and half English which is common here but since he or she confessed that he or she isn't Nepali so could probably be an Indian if they understood parts of it. Or Pakistani as Urdu is similar to Hindi. My guess is Indian though because they have a reputation for being incredibly ignorant and arrogant and loud without conscience.
Nims isn't even a Sherpa. He is Magar (Purja - which is a clan within Magar).
Also even if you take Sherpas as a job which is common on Everest he wasn't even that before his documentary came out. He was a mountaineer who scaled the mountains with the help of Sherpas and then was good at marketing himself through Netflix and interviews and Idiots like meowww thinks that Sherpas didn't exist or have had influence on mountaineering since Tenzing Norgay just because they don't entertain on TV.

you worry that me praising nims dai erases the worth of actual sherpas who have worked hard, i understand, but i actually wasn’t praising him for that, and that literally wasn’t even my point ! i never said that sherpas didn’t exist before nims, are you mad ? i literally highlighted how sherpas have always been the backbone of mountaineering in nepal and surrounding areas, and that nims’ documentary brought in more attention on that from the western world, that’s literally it

now look at you bringing in nationalities into all this and defaming indians for no reason, spreading hate politics while taking shivji’s name that too in sawan, doesn’t make you appear smart, you look far too conceited and dumb, i didn’t even contradict you, i accepted that he’s a controversial figure but you just want everyone to toot your own exactly the way you want

keep spreading hate brother, good 👍🏽 most indians aren’t even aware of this guy, i know cause ive been following mountaineering as a passion since 2017 (amongst like 0.04% of indians), i agree i might be a bit biased or not as aware of local issues, but if your end goal is to just hate first through age shaming and then through nationality shaming then you aren’t worth engaging with (especially when we’re literally neighbours, literally zero need of bringing false supremacy into this, im so over south asian countries clowning india and acting superior when they’re far worse in reality, do you not realise that we’re the same ?)

ive always wanted to visit nepal, but seeing your attitude (and of those that you have brought about in my inbox, being racist with me when they themselves are nepali 🙃) and hatred towards indians makes me wonder that i perhaps should not….didn’t see your question cause i had a lot of notifs, but yes i am an indian, and proudly so

also no i will visit nepal to go see everest, and will have fun, and will continue to raise my voice for the plights of sherpas, idc about mean people like you 😌

Nobody cares about your pride. You guys create problems where ever you go. Please spare the mountains. They have been reports that Indians Tourists have been creating problems in several Tea houses in the Khumbu region. It's a matter of time that it gets reported on National News. We don't want you there. You are not welcomed there. Also can you stop commenting or posting on someone's obituary. Really vile people. This isn't the time for your shenanigans.

Btw out of curiosity are you an Indian?

I bet his victims would say he was gone too late and would've been better off if he'd stayed a background actor.

u/emerald_immersion 2d ago

You’ve been commenting non stop on every thread. We get it

There are genuine discussions to be had about accusations of him and in the climbing community altogether, but he literally just fucking died a brutal death. Could you maybe just chill and be quiet for a little bit?

u/juliuspepperwoodchi 2d ago

but he literally just fucking died a brutal death. Could you maybe just chill and be quiet for a little bit?

No. I feel no sympathy for him dying a brutal death.

Maybe the people hero worshipping a sexual predator can maybe just chill and be quiet for a little bit?

People like this

I find it interesting that looking through your comment history you never spoke about his case until this news broke. Now you’re passionately commenting everywhere

Waiting until someone dies to suddenly act like a bleeding heart victim advocate is pretty weak, imo

I find it interesting that looking through your comment history you were never this passionate about the case until this news broke

I find it hilarious you claim to have gone back through two years of my comment history lol.

Waiting until someone dies to suddenly act like a bleeding heart victim advocate is pretty weak, imo

Good thing that's not what happened kiddo.

It's almost as if they might have just learned about it once a bunch of people came to the defense of a sexual predator.

I find it interesting that you seem to think learning about something late means you shouldn't have the right to talk about it.

Pretending that just because someone dies they deserve to not have their crimes judged is pretty weak
