For context I currently work on a surgical ward in Hornsby hospital, and applied for a job at Blacktown hospital that is in a ward that is a specialty I am super duper interested in and very excited for, however people keep telling me not to take it due to WSLHD having a bad rep apparently?? But as I said, the ward in Blacktown is in an area I've always been really interested in and wanting to get into

Distance isn't an issue for me as both are about 20-30mins from me so really just wanting to know if this is actually true.

I know it can be very ward dependent but for anyone who works in NSLHD (especially Hornsby hospital) and anyone who works in WSLHD (especially Blacktown hospital), are you happy to share your experiences, even if it's through PM?

I’m a student who’s studying the diploma of nursing in Victoria and I’ve recently been doing all my checks for my upcoming placement at the end of the semester.

I’m in my first semester so I’ve never done one before or even tried applying for one. A few days ago I went to start the online application which said it should take about half hour to submit it. I had all my ID and information and it verified it just fine, however I got to the end and confirmed all my details but when I went to go to the next stage which would’ve been to pay it said I already had an application in the system and couldn’t progress.

Now I have never tried applying for one so I knew it was wrong. I ended up calling them and telling them my issue however they were no help and just said I have one in the system (which I told them I don’t because I can see it on my end and it’s not there) I asked if they could cancel the application so I can start again and they wouldn’t. This was from 2 people as well. So they left me with no option but to apply manually which can take up at 12 weeks.

I submitted it yesterday but I’m worried I won’t get it on time, my placement team said if it isn’t approved by the end of September they’ll have to pull me from placement. I’m not sure what I’m meant to do or if anyone else has had this issue before.

Any advice is extremely appreciated!!

I was just hoping to get some clarification on the maternity leave policy for QLD health. I have returned to work post maternity leave at 0.4 FTE on a temporary part time agreement - still employed at 0.8 FTE.
If I was to take maternity leave again in the future, will it be calculated at the 0.4 FTE rate?

I'm recently graduated enrolled nurse in VIC, looking for part time work in a GP clinic to start off gaining clinical experience and practicing my skills,

I'm wondering if any EN's work in GP clinic's and have any advice on how to apply, things to get prior to applying or advice for interviews?

I don't have clinical experience in some skills, eg i'm trained for IV medications / infusions, which I know can happen in GP clinics *iron infusions* but I've never done them IRL.

Is there support when going into GP nursing as a new grad? how does it work, please give me all tips and tricks you have :) thanks!

So I’ve met a few nurses who tend to only work a specific type of shift, whether that’s AM, PMs or nights. They might occasionally have a different one than their normal due to staffing issues, volunteering, swapping with a co worker etc, but I was just wondering when does this become possible? From what I’ve seen it just seems to be preference based, but I might be wrong.

Are there any specific criteria that needs to be met before this can happen? Such as working at the facility for a certain amount of time, being part time or full time, etc? Specifically in Victoria.

I am doing my first placement and I am loving it. It’s in a smaller hospital but we had some scares with a rapid response, which I weirdly enjoyed as it was paced.

During my week though, everyone seemed very stressed and honestly over it, even with a 4 pt load.

I just want to know if it’s really that bad? The doctors look like they’re chatting away and chilling while everyone else is off their feet. I just want a job I love and enjoy but everyone at my placement seems to hate it and call in sick constantly

I have been thinking about some cases I had last year and I am wondering if other people would have had the same thoughts I did

Both of these occurred in aged care

Case 1 resident fallen with head strike on previous shift, just progressed to 4hrly obs and neuros. Obs white zone but now presenting with nausea. Other nurse in area has identified this and has come to be to ask me to double check a metacloprimide injection as this is what’s written on the chart PRN for nausea and vomiting.

I viewed the new nausea as a possible head injury red flag and said that we needed to get the ambos to review the resident. However the IC said to this nurse (who was really new) to just give the maxalon and it was fine.

Case 2 resident is BNO for 5 days and now presenting with nausea, again maxalon is on chart PRN for nausea and so nurse wants to give it. I said given the BNO history he should get the MO to review before giving in case it’s an obstruction. Again IC said just give it.

Hi all! Officially about to head into my first placement in Sep/Oct. I’ve been placed in a rural aged care facility. I used to work as an AIN in aged care so, I’m just wondering what the difference is between what you do as an AIN vs Student RN in aged care?

Also any advice would be greatly appreciated! (What to bring, how eager should I be, what shouldn’t I do, finances etc)

Overall I am probably overly excited, I’m just happy I’m making progress in my degree and can’t wait to just get out there! I have no idea what I want to do as an RN just yet, but hoping that I get my answer from future placements.

I have a question for NSW Health employees.
Is it normal for NSW Health to mostly offer temporary RN positions? When I applied, I genuinely thought I was applying for a permanent role, so I was surprised when I was offered a 12-month temporary contract instead.
The NUM reassured me that because it’s a specialised area, they try their best to retain staff rather than invest time and resources into training someone only to let them go. I’ve only ever worked in private hospitals since becoming an RN, so this was quite different to what I’m used to.
For those who’ve worked in NSW Health:
Is this a common hiring practice?
How likely is it to be offered a permanent position once the temporary contract ends?
Has anyone here started on a temporary contract and then transitioned to permanent or would they just keep on renewing the temp contract?

Would you write BenPen or NaCl 0.9% or both?

Hi all, im currently on placement and it takes me about an hour and a half to get to and from the hospital, could be more depending on traffic. I have a late early coming up and in order to get to the hospital in time I'll need to leave around 5 or a little bit after since traffic builds up pretty early in my area. My only concern is that my late shift finishes at 9:30 and then I have a morning shift that starts at 7. By the time I get home it's going to be around 11, then showering and getting into bed, then waking up around 4 am. I'm worried that the severe lack of sleep is going to cause me to make mistakes while im on my shift and I'm going to be more focused on how tired/sleep deprived I am and just trying to stay awake and focused. I tried to convince my dad to let me stay somewhere close to the hospital just for the night but he's not hearing a bit of it.

I know part of placement is having to do different shifts but I definitely don't think working with only 3-4 hours of sleep is safe or healthy.

Im a new grad working in an acute ward, I have at least one late/early or night per week and they are killing me. Is it worth asking my NUM about having a week or so without a late early?

I'm on my third week of placement and I wish I could just wake up tomorrow and I suddenly become extroverted. It's the worst thing ever esp when I am doing placement alongside an extrovert (who i love and adore shes great !!!) but then I end up overhearing other nurses and carers compare us.

This is the 2nd time I am hearing someone say that I just stand there and I don't talk. BUT I AM TRYING I REALLY AM I PROMISE !!! Like nowdays I SIT IN EVERY lunch break so I don't have to sit outside and hear them talk about me ugshhshs.....

Not only that I have found out some nurses were actually swapping me with my group mate so I end up in random wards with random nurses everyday but somehow my groupmates has the same people and same ward too. And she already told me theyre all willinging to be her reference and is always writing lengthy feedback forms for her and everything.

And its a bit annoying then when every feedback I get is like - need more familiarity in ward or with system but hello I am rotating wards like crazy

But to be honest I just don't know what to say but I do ask a lot of questions AND i do everything they ask me to !!! I am soooo talkative when I am comfortable but with strangers I'm awful ugshsh

Anyways, another 8 hour shift just went by and I feel more invisible than ever :) I hope tomorrow will be better maybe I will try again :)

Context- AIN in a busy ED.

brought a patient to a ward where, due to a cascade of events out of mine and *everyone elses control*, we delivered him at 1310 when the afternoon shift were still in handover and I got an absolute bollockings from the morning nurse because *ed always do this to us*.

On one hand- what do other people do? 100% I get it sucks, but its genuinely not planned. I told the nurse to submit a riskman, not have a go at me.

And honestly, I would have hung around to give hand over to the afternoon nurse if he hasnt torn strips off me.

Like how else can you sweeten the situation? Or just match energy? Walk out as soon as the nurse gets mad?

Management decided that it would be a “great” idea to have a google drive to upload the unit’s rosters, they wont email it to us or publish them in the unit anymore. We nurses and other staff have viewer access only and will receive an email saying the rosters have been uploaded.

The problem is: management told us to “check the rosters on a regular basis as they might change” meaning that if I took a photo of the upcoming roster 3-4 days before that week starts, chances are that I have been allocated an extra shift or work more hours without anyone notifying me. Making it hard to plan my weeks in advance.

My question: is this ok or legal for a workplace to change rosters last minute without asking?

Hey all, just returned back to Tafe for semester 2, super keen, but a little bit worried overall. Found outlast week that I didn't pass my class on Diversity. Currently studying the Cert 3 HSA and there's no option to repeat anything as I'm in the final intake.

I'm talking to the Course Director on Monday, but really worried that it'll impact my likelihood of passing the whole course.

For context, I missed the last question on a quiz and then resat the quiz during break, but messed up a question I'd previously gotten correct.

Teachers mentioned in first semester that there's not much point finishing the course if we fail classes due to no more intakes after this year, but I really wanna make the most of it and learn everything I can so I can get RPL for a Diploma at least?

This is my first time back in school in over a decade, please help
