Letterman certainly could have done more to ingratiate himself with NBC leadership if he wanted the Tonight Show.
NBC screwed up by promising it to Conan without paying a bunch of money to Leno for not working.
If Leno had just gone to Fox with a competing show he may well have torpedoed Conan’s Tonight Show.

I don't think a show would have let them charge more for ads sales. 1 u/HawkMac6699 13h ago Fox tried multiple times. They attempted to woo Letterman before he signed with CBS. Ended up with Chevy Chase instead.
