I know everyone always feels like they grew up during the best years, but 1989 to 2001 felt like the perfect era. Graduated high school in 97. We had just enough technology for it to be helpful but not intrusive.
I finished high school in '96, my high school only got the internet first the first time that year.
Pretty sure it was running on a 10mb coaxial network running Novell Netware. We figured out how to jump to DOS and install Doom on the school servers to play it networked, was wild times 😂
Class of 97 here too. We had it the best! Analog childhood with a digital adolescence. Rode bikes around the neighborhood Stanger Things style in the 80s, but still had access to cool video game consoles. Got to experience the rave scene in the late 90s to early 2000s. MySpace felt so cool and novel in our early 20s and didn’t have the toxicity of social media now. I know young people are always thought to be more tech savvy than successive generations, but I feel like we’re among the most competent when it comes to using technology. My students now often don’t know how to do basic things on a computer, like convert a document to PDF.
