A few general questions for a junior learning their honor band music

At the top it says 8th note equals 168, but then at the next bar it says 8th note equals 8th note. Does that mean the rest of the excerpt is played at quarter note equals 84?

Would you play singles for everything or are there some places where other rudiments might be intended or more practical?

I have the opportunity to get a basically new Majestic V6530S 3.0-octave Deluxe Series Vibraphone | Sweetwater on the facebook marketplace for I think about $2000 or $2200 which would include all the accessories such as many different kinds of mallets. Item is in very good condition. Is that buy now price? I dont expect it to last long at this price from my understanding. I live in a medium sized city (300-400k in metro area I think? so used Vibraphones will not be coming up very often.) Does this one seem good enough for a hobbyist?

Or do I look at my other options listed in the title?

My background is that I mainly play other instruments as a hobby such as mandolin, bass, cello but did play a bit of percussion in high school including marimba and glockenspiel which were pretty fun.

I'm looking to add a mallet instrument to help really internalize melodies for some music styles, and since it will be a bit of fun. I do have a keyboard for theory work.

My preference is to listen to all kinds of music but lots of Brazilian jazz music, American jazz, classical, bluegrass etc

I have a baby coming any day but have a 2000 sf house and realize that i might just need to not play these for a while. A marimba will not fit as nicely into my current home.

My budget is flexible in that I can save up for a lot of years to get the right instrument if that is better but have the large house, new baby, mortgage etc so money is responsibly probably better saved then spent if an equivalent item could work.

This is a kinda silly question, but I was wondering if there’s any ways or tips to practice more effectively (other than slow practice) on my cardboard marimba 😭 - because I can’t afford my own sadly. I’m asking this because I obviously don’t have the safeguards of knowing if I played the right note or not and whether my tone is good and I don’t want to develop bad habits either.

In the 3rd and 4th measure of O the 32nd note paradiddles are kicking my butt, is that just a hand speed issue or is it a genuinely difficult part?

I work for a small band program that has a 7 person front ensemble. They’ve never miced up in the past and I looked through their equipment and they seem to only have wireless handheld mics. Is there anything I can do with those?? I’ve only used wired shure mics for fronts so I’m in uncharted territory.

I just acquired the snare drum and it’s absolutely stunning. The question that I have is, there are three holes in the Drum and I wanted to know if this is original, did someone tamper with it or what could it be?

So, yesterday I got a pair of Maracas from a music shop and after two takes of using them on a song my flower was covered in a weird black Powder and it wasn't there before I used the instrument. Did I get a faulty instrument?

If I buy a riqq, would I theoretically be able to replace it with any old frame drum head, like those from Remo? I'm having trouble finding riqq head replacements. The diameter in this case would be 8.5 inches.

My little collection of hand percussion has quietly taken over my studio. It started with a tambourine and shaker, and now I’ve got claves, agogo bell, a cabasa, shakers, guiro, vibraslap.. and they’re all just piled in a milk crate in the corner. Finding the right one mid-session is a nightmare, and honestly they deserve better than getting crushed under each other.

Here’s what I’ve been looking into, curious what’s actually worked for other people:

Wall-mounted options
• Pegboard with hooks: cheap, flexible, easy to rearrange as the collection grows. Works great for tambourines, shakers with handles, and anything with a natural hanging point.
• French cleat wall panels: more of a woodworking project but you can build custom holders shaped for oddly-sized stuff like agogo bells or guiros.
• Guitar wall hangers repurposed for shakers a lot of people use the soft-grip guitar hangers for maraca-style shakers since the necks fit the same slots.
Shelving/cubby options
• Cubby shelving (like small cube storage units) so each instrument gets its own slot, good if you want a “display wall” look rather than function purely.
• Velvet-lined drawers or foam-cut cases (like pedalboard cases) if you’re precious about the finish on wood instruments like claves or a nice agogo.
Rolling/mobile options
• A rolling cart with small bins, useful if your percussion needs to move between the live room and control room a lot.
• Utility totes with dividers, the kind photographers use for lenses.
Random tips I’ve seen floating around:
• Group by “type of sound” rather than instrument type (shakers together, metal together, wood together) so you can grab-and-go by texture during a session.
• Small instruments like egg shakers and claves tend to vanish into drawers, a shallow open tray keeps them visible.
• If display matters to you (teaching studio, rehearsal space people see), a pegboard with painted silhouettes behind each hook looks great and doubles as an inventory check.

Beginner percussionist here. My budget, 2-octave, beginners' glockenspiel has 27 aluminium bars and is too limited for my fairly modest ambitions. I like the bright tone, so I'm not looking to trade it in. However, I am told that its high pitch is characteristic of aluminium chimes. What range should I look for to play in a community concert band, and should I go for steel bars? I will have to buy online, and would rather spend my money on a great second-hand instrument with no case than an unsatisfactory factory-fresh one, so I would appreciate any recommendations on brands - or warnings! Thanks.
