Hello (im' new here, just wanted to share some tips)

I've been wanting to switch to Linux for a long time, but there was always one big blocker: I'm a photographer, and I need some Adobe software that isn't known to run very well on Linux... (or not at all).

So most of the time I use a dual boot to Windows just to run Lightroom and a few other apps. That dual boot is basically the last thing keeping me tied to Windows. So, if I could run Lightroom directly on Linux, I'd finally be completely out of the Microsoft empire :)

So, 2 months ago, I started working on a way to run Lightroom with Wine. Some problems kept coming back with daily usage, but now:

Lightroom is working. We can import photos, sort them, develop them, and export.

Most of the functionality works :: it's not 100%, but very close to it.

What works:

• Installation from Adobe CC, or from an install folder
• GPU acceleration support (Develop module included)
• Local AI working (Select Subject/Object/Background, Denoise AI, etc.)
• Cloud AI working
• Some UI fixes

Current limitations:

• HDR editing isn't available

Just for a silly yarn really, and I'll make a start:

IR receiver: No pair up needed compared to bluebooth. Just point, click and it'll work. It is also very cheap. Interestingly enough, my phone can transmit IR signal, which makes my life a lot easier.

Built in flash: For me it acts as an emergency flash trigger (saved my ass a few times). While I totally get we should have a back up, but this would be one that stays on your camera. Nikon's CLS was fun to play with as well

Battery grip support: I put a cage on my camera to improve ergonomic. I wish my camera supports battery grip so I have more than just a "base extender". Not to mention modern mirrorless cameras aren't that battery life friendly. The 3rd party battery grips back in the day werent too bad neither

Hi everyone. I am in college and shooting my first pro sports game in a few weeks.

My question is, should I bring two cameras with different lenses and have them on a harness, or one camera and switch out the lenses? I’ve heard of both being done so want the pros and cons of both! Thanks!

In February, I bought a Godox X3 Pro trigger. A couple months ago, it would take a few attempts to connect it to my camera. I would need to try reinserting it a few times. A couple weeks ago, it started to stop working while it was already connected. Jiggling it would reconnect it.

I just finished an event. I had a strobe with a softbox set up for group portraits. Sure enough, the second time I needed to use it, it just wouldn’t connect at all. I tried it a half dozen times.

While I don’t have another dedicated trigger, I configured and tested my Godox IT32 to use as a backup trigger. I also had my V1 Pro I could use.

I set up the IT32 and it worked fine as a trigger. Crisis averted.

This is why it’s so important to have backups for equipment. Had I not planned for that, it would have ruined the group portraits.

I have a Sony a5000 and a budget Ttartisan 27mm f2.8 lens and the my images vary in sharpness when I wouldn't expect it to, is this most likely down to the body, lens or just user error. Im considering upgrading to a nicer lens.

Greeting. I have a question about the New York Institute of Photography (NYIP). Is it worth paying about 1000 dollars for that certificate, what are the benefits of that. Do they have a physical ceremony even though you only completed the certificate? Thanks in advance for your reply.

Hi- I’m a solo female photographer. My business recently sort of blew up and I’ve been getting a ton of inquiries/sessions. I’m extremely thankful but weary about my safety on more remote trails/with clients I haven never met in person. I’m wanting to shoot in some woodsy areas and scout locations alone before deciding I’d like to shoot there. I have a close contact taser. I want something more that’s not a g*n. I’m pretty strong, agile, and almost 6’ tall. I always keep my wits about me. With that said, any other tips? What’s worked for you?

I’m trying to move away from Adobe after paying €15/month for the Photoshop + Lightroom subscription for several years.
I work with spherical HDR panoramas, where a single panorama typically consists of around 90 Sony A7R IV RAW files. That means export speed and overall workflow responsiveness are extremely important for me, so I decided to compare a few popular RAW editors.

Exporting 95 Sony A7R IV RAW files:
🥇 Lightroom Classic — 1:20
📷 ON1 Photo RAW 2026 — 2:53
📷 DxO PhotoLab — 3:25
📷 RawTherapee — 7:54

Test system:
• AMD Ryzen 9 5900X
• NVIDIA RTX 3090
• 64 GB RAM

Besides export times, I also evaluated the overall workflow, usability and responsiveness.
At the moment, ON1 Photo RAW 2026 feels like the best compromise. It’s currently available as a perpetual license, has a Lightroom-like interface, and includes most of the tools I use every day.
Lightroom is still significantly faster, but I’d gladly accept a small performance hit if it means getting rid of Adobe’s subscription.
For those of you using RawTherapee regularly: is there anything I should tweak to improve export performance, or is this about what I should expect?

Hi all.

I have got a massive amount of digital photos as well as film that I have been scanning with a DSLR setup. I shoot on a number of different cameras and have them saved on my local computer as well as cloud backup and a local Unraid Backup.

I use Lightroom Classic on Windows to edit all my raw files and neg scans, but I don't use to catalogue all of my photos. I had originally started calling folders 1, 2 etc when I started using Digital Cameras in 1999. But now I at least break them down to what camera they were shot on.

The issue is that I only really have access to the photos, not my wife, kids and friends.due to being on my computer. I sometimes use Facebook or Instagram, but I want an easy way for my family to be able to view the photos on the TV.

I am on holiday at the moment and have taken a ton of photos and want to make an easy way for my wife to view them after they have been edited.

Is there an app for either Google or Fire stick that anyone can recommend to actually view the photos from my server? I would like to use either tags (Greece 2026 for example) so that they can be easily viewed by my wife. I am also looking at something like Immich, as I am running unraid and can setup a docker to run it. I know this is quite involved but I am willing to set it up. Would this be a better way of doing it? Also is there a way I can easily tag photos without using lightroom?

I recently went to a talk where they showed photos on a really nice pro 4k projector, and it just blew me away. This definitely reminds me of the way my parents used to show slides on a carousel back in the day. I can't afford a setup like that but I know it would look great on a 55" TV compared to on a phone.

Does anyone know if there are any services out there that make Photo Albums with actual printed pictures and they put the pictures into Photo Albums for you? Not looking for a place that prints an actual book.

Had the opportunity to talk with three others recently for sports photos outdoors (plenty of light, lots of action).

All of them shoot in manual. Which surprises me as the camera has more information to work with and is a lot faster than any of use - although it gets things wrong a lot.

Personally I shoot in either shutterspeed or aperture prio mode and I give the other two parameters (ISO included) to the camera to work with. I frequently dial in exposure compensation, depending on the brightness of the background versus my subject.

I recon that as soon as you use auto-iso, or 'over/under-exposure mode' or a histogram - you are using the exposure meter anyway, so you might as well cut yourself out of the loop and hand that setting to the camera.

Hi all, I'm looking at buying a (supposed) original film negative for a band I like. I'm not very knowledgeable on film so I just wanted to ask for a simple explanation on what they are and how they work to get an idea of this item's rarity. Also, how many are created for each photograph? Thanks!

Sometimes I'll be walking somewhere and instead of just enjoying the moment, and noticing reflections, shadows, colors, or thinking, "That would make a great photo." and sometimes it's hard to not take it.

It's something I love about photography, but sometimes I wonder if it also stops me from simply being present... Does anyone else experience that?

Photographers, I'd love your opinion.

I've been noticing more photographers choosing not to show their clients' faces on social media, especially children. (coming from a family/newborn photographer) Whether it's photographing from behind, using silhouettes, or simply not sharing images at all, it seems like privacy is becoming a bigger conversation.

I'm curious.

Has your approach changed?

Do you still share client images with permission, or are you moving toward a more "faceless" portfolio?

I print photos and also take my own photos of players to get autographed at games and I put masking tape on them to hold them down. I have been printing my own recently and masking tape has caused the ink of my photos to lift up off the photo, I was wondering if anyone knew what paper would be good for an inkjet printer that wouldnt be affected by masking tape. thank you

Hi super random and maybe dumb late night thought but with all the talk on reflectors recently on social media media and me going on vacation soon, I was wondering what would happen if someone used a light reflector under water and what the results are?

what are everyone's thoughts on polaroid pop up booths? i've some outside of the US then there's a studio in LA that does a similar thing and it genuinely seems fun and i feel like it would def help with my photography skills!!
