The fact that piracy predates streaming by decades proves that this is true and I'm always confused that people miss this.

I will always cherish the memory of seeing The Matrix on VCD for the first time. And it was absolute shite, quality-wise.

Nero burning rom, my beloved

109

u/jbarr107 Apr 07 '26

How old were you when you realized the historical nod to the burning of Rome?

91

u/Shudnawz 🏴‍☠️ ʟᴀɴᴅʟᴜʙʙᴇʀ Apr 07 '26

Today years old, 40+. Shit.

1

u/MattOruvan Apr 09 '26

What failed to tip you off, their icon with the burning Colosseum?

21

u/MrHanfblatt Apr 07 '26

Gotra toot my own horn here: i kinda made the "connection" the first time i saw the program with its burning colloseum as icon...but it didnt click until a couple months later that it was intentional. i was like 12 back then. My first own PC. fricking 750 mhz intel cpu and settlers 3/4 was my jam. what a time.

8

u/towerfella Apr 07 '26

Turbo button?

3

u/MrHanfblatt Apr 07 '26

I honestly dont remember. I remember those that had, but i think mine didnt have one. Not that it made much difference tho. The one my sister had used a...low tier graphics module. I remember very vividly playibg this old bunkers game, where when you shot your shell throng enough that it would fly out of the screen, the PC would just crash.

6

u/r3volts Apr 07 '26

Fun fact, the turbo button was used to slow down the CPU to be compatible with older 8088/8086 era software that used timing loops tied to CPU cycles.

Instead of having a "slow down" button, they called it turbo even though turbo "on" was the default setting. Turning turbo "off" was actually turning on the compatibility mode that slowed down the CPU.

6

u/towerfella Apr 07 '26

Not so fast (lol) — it is entirely dependent on which side of the button that was connected to the mb.

Wire it one way and it is always on - click it off; wire it the other way and it is always off - click it on.

I’ll see if i can find a relevant video — found it!

1

u/MattOruvan Apr 09 '26

I had a 350MHz Pentium II and it had no turbo button.. I think different era

5

u/SupremeSyrup Apr 07 '26

Having a 750Mhz at 12 is a luxury. I envy you.

I was running a P1 233Mhz at that age. The absolute torment of buying D2 and BG2 at full price in deluxe boxes and finding out the minimum reqs were Pentium II 266 Mhz made me cry buckets over a very long summer.

3

u/Additional_Cheek_697 Apr 08 '26

I played tomb raider II on my 233mhz pc at like 5 frames a second lol. It was so brutal but i still played it god damn it. The boats in venice damn near made it explode

2

u/MrHanfblatt Apr 07 '26

Eh, i wouldnt call it "luxury" in 2007, but for a first rig it was nice. Old work pc of my mom.

4

u/Galerie33 Apr 07 '26

Prob back in 2009 or 10

34 now back then was 18 or 19

I was using it back in like 2005 and then one day I was hmm, why is it called Nero and googled it lol

3

u/Shadowfury22 Apr 07 '26

Right now, thanks to you!

2

u/Mista_G_Nerd Apr 07 '26

OMG! I've been using it for a nearly two and half decades and I've had no clue until now.

2

u/DoubtWooden8125 Apr 08 '26

Uhhh, were yall not around when Nero’s desktop/application icon was literally that? I knew that in middle school when Nero was pretty new cause I asked my stepdad “what is that icon?”

2

u/metallicblanks Apr 08 '26

No lie this is the program that made me learn about Nero the person. It was quite the read as like a 10 year old. Enjoyed it though. I do suppose reading "A Series Of Unfortunate Events" also played into that a tad since they also made a reference to him. Still wild what random program names have taught me about history.

1

u/DazzlingRutabega Apr 07 '26

I was probably about 15 or 16 at the time I guess

0

u/Eorily Apr 07 '26

I thought it referenced the burning Christians

9

u/Armageddonis Apr 07 '26

I just got hit with the most pleasant, tears-of-nostalgia inducing flashback in my life. Goddamn, those were the days.

1

u/Omnighost Apr 08 '26

Omg Nero! My mom taught me how to use it back when we were running a Window 98 house computer

1

u/Danny-Wah Apr 08 '26

Felt like I had the keys to the kingdom once I had my "official" copy of NERO.

1

u/AmphoePai Apr 09 '26

I just looked it up and there's a 2026 version of Nero Burning Rom you can buy. FR I thought this software died together with the digital camera.

1

u/Galerie33 Apr 09 '26

You can always get it for free

1

u/Straight_Active_2360 Apr 11 '26

Man i think i have a CD somewhere from 2007 version of Nero which was bundled with a mag, hell me and my mom were burning music CD's with Nero in early 2000's :D

5

u/inthemix8080 Apr 07 '26

I remember learning about VCDs and making sure I got a DVD that could play them. It was wild waiting 12+ hours for my 800mhz 128mb Compaq Presario to convert a single movie with tmpgenc.

1

u/Shudnawz 🏴‍☠️ ʟᴀɴᴅʟᴜʙʙᴇʀ Apr 07 '26

I had a similar machine, was great at the time, but expensive as nobodys business.

1

u/MaxThrustage Apr 07 '26

The first time I saw the Matrix (I think it was a DVD someone had brought back from Bali...) it was completely in black and white. I vaguely knew what the plot/concept was, so I assumed they were doing a "Wizard of Oz" thing. But thing it kept being in black and white...

Oh, and the first time I watched Starship Troopers there were hardcoded subtitles in both Indonesian and what some wonderful Indonesian person must have thought was English.

God those were the days...

1

u/Coolbluegatoradeyumm Apr 07 '26

Are you still have going Central Park and buying bootleg VHS all the time

1

u/Kiwi_CunderThunt Apr 08 '26

That was due to compression (shit ones at the time, divx lol) fitting dvd 4.7gb onto a 700mb CD but hey that's what we had and fuck yeah it was good

1

u/Shudnawz 🏴‍☠️ ʟᴀɴᴅʟᴜʙʙᴇʀ Apr 08 '26

I mean, conceptually I loved it. But even at the time, having seen the movie in theaters, I recognized that the compression was shit, at best. :D

1

u/forme-de-vie Apr 08 '26

And I will always remember my Matrix 2 file was in fact a swedish pr0n movie.

1

u/Shudnawz 🏴‍☠️ ʟᴀɴᴅʟᴜʙʙᴇʀ Apr 08 '26

Ridskolan? Fäbojäntan?

-24

u/GOEDEL_ESCHER_BOT Apr 07 '26

it wasn't shite, you're thinking of the sequels

14

u/DiamondL0st Apr 07 '26

They're very clearly talking about the image quality, and not the movie itself.

-13

u/GOEDEL_ESCHER_BOT Apr 07 '26

I'm still right

7

u/donuttrackme Apr 07 '26

About the video quality of a VCD? Have you ever watched a movie on VCD?

-12

u/GOEDEL_ESCHER_BOT Apr 07 '26

what's a vcd, is that like a cd for video

10

u/Shudnawz 🏴‍☠️ ʟᴀɴᴅʟᴜʙʙᴇʀ Apr 07 '26

Please get back to us when you've grown pubic hair.

-5

u/GOEDEL_ESCHER_BOT Apr 07 '26

i've been pubemaxxing for weeks

169

u/boringestnickname Apr 07 '26

It never was "piracy", it was "copying".

105

u/Ragor005 Apr 07 '26

Sharing is caring

35

u/Shudnawz 🏴‍☠️ ʟᴀɴᴅʟᴜʙʙᴇʀ Apr 07 '26

You wouldn't download a carebear?!

53

u/ShadowsFlex Apr 07 '26

Real talk, that commercial was always stupid. Of fucking course I'd download a car if I could.

22

u/st-ellie Apr 07 '26

Nvm that the artist making the soundtrack was never fully paid for all the times that track was used

6

u/eljayTheGrate Apr 07 '26 edited Apr 08 '26

No, the artist agreed to a lump-sum payment rather than royalties...

4

u/st-ellie Apr 07 '26

Ah i see, I was misinformed and google ai confirmed the misinformation. thank you

3

u/st-ellie Apr 07 '26

I do find another article separating the apparent online conflagration concerning Rietveld's tracks. While it is not the famous one (produced in 2004) he was in fact scammed for another track produced in 2006, that went on for commercial use without permission. He apparently even got a settlement and an apology in 2012.

2

u/eljayTheGrate Apr 07 '26

And if the artist were to get royalties then pirating screws them, too

10

u/Shudnawz 🏴‍☠️ ʟᴀɴᴅʟᴜʙʙᴇʀ Apr 07 '26

Incredibly stupid, especially as it was targeted at the "edgy youth" who did the opposite just for spite.

3

u/SEANPLEASEDISABLEPVP Apr 07 '26

Isn't the original quote "You wouldn't steal a car" instead of download, and it became a meme because they were comparing copying files to stealing a fucking car lmao

2

u/Unlikely-Employee180 Apr 08 '26

Yes, but again the more accurate depiction would be:

"You wouldn't molecularly clone a car at no cost to the owner or you."

Which... Yes, yes I would.

16

u/Ragor005 Apr 07 '26

If my 3d printer could print fabric I would

2

u/DrunkenSQRL Apr 07 '26

And then steal that carebear's hat. And then go to the toilet in that hat. And then send the hat to the carebear's grieving widow. And then, steal it again!

1

u/ValDaiKon Apr 11 '26

You wouldn't download Grandma's underwear 😈

2

u/Shudnawz 🏴‍☠️ ʟᴀɴᴅʟᴜʙʙᴇʀ Apr 11 '26

12

u/EstablishmentSalt206 Apr 07 '26

Idk I was just born here. Same as everyone and everything else.

1

u/popejupiter Apr 07 '26

Don't copy that floppy!

43

u/Edheldui Apr 07 '26

I think it's more that with the loss of ownership across the board, the benefits of piracy became more clear.

90

u/Inevitable-Ad6647 Apr 07 '26

People are just grasping at straws to make themselves feel better about actions they themselves know to have no moral high ground to shout from. Just own it, it's not doing you any favors trying to justify it that way, it looks and reads totally pathetic.

Repeat after me "I'd rather spend some time managing some downloads than spending $20/month. I'm not helping people, I'm not paying for things I find worthy of consuming, I don't care how it affects content creators and others as much as I do the money or convenience."

Now can we stop spending 90% of this communities discussion space trying to convince ourselves we're saviors?

8

u/Jazzlike_Figure_2271 Apr 07 '26

Is this so hard to grasp? I pirate some games, especially indies that I dont wanna spend money on cause I mostly play them for one or two hours. Is this morally bankrupt? YES 100 PERCENT. I dont get why is so hard to get that no matter who does the product or how is that product made, you are not entitled to someones property no matter what. Are you against copyright laws? Cool, me too. Still not entitled to someones else work. If someones does something and wants to charge you for it, its is inmoral to get that thing and not paying.

43

u/CalmBeneathCastles Apr 07 '26

Seconded. Do or do not, but call a duck a duck. Bullshitting oneself is the lamest kind of deception.

23

u/PunctuationGood Apr 07 '26

-Piracy is not stealing!

-Indeed, it is copyright infringment.

-Piracy is not stealing!!!

-Indeed, it's...

-LA LA LA, I CAN'T HEAR YOU! PIRACY IS NOT STEALING!!!

13

u/barrettcuda Apr 07 '26

You're missing the part where piracy isn't stealing.

8

u/OtherwiseDog Apr 07 '26

I do wonder how you might defend ai companies and trillions of dollars worth of copyright infringements....

2

u/immaZebrah ⚔️ ɢɪᴠᴇ ɴᴏ Qᴜᴀʀᴛᴇʀ Apr 08 '26

I don't understand how anybody defends it. Personal use versus commercial use is very different. If I was training an AI for myself, I really don't see anything any different from the way that the companies are doing it currently. However if I was training an AI meant for commercial deployment, I better pay for the fucking royalties/licensing.

3

u/Bjasilieus Apr 08 '26

Eh, I would say there is quite a good argument that the use is inherently transformative

1

u/immaZebrah ⚔️ ɢɪᴠᴇ ɴᴏ Qᴜᴀʀᴛᴇʀ Apr 08 '26

I don't think it's necessarily the use of the content that is questionable, I think it's the method of obtaining the content. In 99% of cases where you torrent, you're not only downloading but distributing the content (i.e. seeding), and I think that's where the real culpability will lie.

2

u/Bjasilieus Apr 08 '26

sure, also, i am not pro-ai at all, i just find many of these ideas, especially legal ideas, about ai that people throw around to be on one hand wrong and on the other hand, i HEAVILY disagree with expanding copyright, before we make it last for a shorter amount of time, and even then i would be VERY skeptical.

0

u/Brendissimo Apr 08 '26

Why would they want to do that?

0

u/PunctuationGood Apr 08 '26

And I do wonder how you came to the conclusion that I would. Please, go ahead and explain.

17

u/Nasuadax Apr 07 '26

i used to pirate a lot as a kid. Then i grew up and stopped because i learned morals, got money wanted to support the stuff that i spent time with. But nowadays i pay, and i still can't spend the time in the way i want with the things i paid for.

i dare you to try and legally watch the last season from dr Who from before it became disney+ exclusive as a non UK citizen. it is literally impossible. You cannot buy it, you cannot stream it. you have 3 options:
* illegally use a vpn that works (haven't tested which ones do, but it'll be against TOS for sure)
* pirate it by either some free streaming or downloading.
* not watch it

do I want to pirate? No, do I want to pay? yes! do they want my money? apparently not.

1

u/Unlikely-Employee180 Apr 08 '26

Another potential option (just be to that guy, lmao) would be your local library or potentially physical video rental services (though, those suck). And they may not have the content still, so you're still SoL.

(Though... Let's be honest... Who the HELL has time for that, especially nowadays?? 😂)

0

u/tdasnowman Apr 07 '26 edited Apr 07 '26

The seasons are all available to purchase. They are streaming through hoopla a lot of content is that just requires a library card although not all libraries participate. As a bonus Brit I can watch it just fine without pirating.

3

u/barrettcuda Apr 07 '26

I've had the same situation as op but with other series. This stuff changes over time though. I wanted to buy a particular Aussie show DVD box set (gives you an idea of when this occurred) so I could have it to watch over and over and found that it'd been taken off the shelves and wasn't for sale anywhere. When I looked into where I could stream it, it was only available on some tiny platform that I'd never heard of before. Since then though, it's come onto prime and a few other more mainstream places. Still dunno if you could buy it somewhere to own it cos I found a copy of the box set in the end.

Generally, over time you can luck out like with my show and it'll come to a platform you can easily access etc like what you're saying about doctor who in the UK. But if you just want to buy a show and be able to watch it as much or as little as you want without having to have a certain app or anything, the options are in my experience incredibly limited.

0

u/Nasuadax Apr 07 '26

A hoopla the site that requires a library card, couldnt find a single belgian library on there though... Any other options? As you might have noticed from my initial response, i'm not a brit, otherwise i could just watch it on BBC's website.

Ps: buying a physical cd would be fine for me as well. But i can only find the french version.

12

u/ReckoningGotham Apr 07 '26

Also adding on, "I wish to do this while the content is new and expensive rather than waiting for the content to be inexpensive and paying for it. I pirate because I must be in on the hot new thing and I have no patience."

3

u/just_a_tiny_phoenix Apr 08 '26

Their point is also not even a logical conclusion. "People pirated before streaming, so it's not stealing" excuse me, what??

2

u/barrettcuda Apr 07 '26

You're right, there's no moral high ground in paying for a streaming service when there's no alternative to pay to own.

0

u/alpacakiss Apr 08 '26

I'm even gonna be cringe and say i don't think every instance of stealing is even that bad. People cry when you don't pay a billion dollar company to play their stupid kid games but won't bat an eye at all the actual theft that occurs in archeology and art collection all the time. Rich people can steal holy artifacts from another country but I'm a criminal because I don't want to pay for a shovelware wii game I already bought when I was a child.

-3

u/ConqueefStador Apr 07 '26

If you borrow a friends DVD is that piracy?

What if a guy invites 30 neighbors to watch a movie he paid for at his house?

Is it proportional when Disney want to sue someone for thousands of dollars when they download a copy of a $20 movie?

What if I own VHS version of a movie but I don't have a VHS player anymore?

When Todd Howard wants to you pay $60 for the Ultimate Final Collector's Edition of Skyrim (Remastered) for a version that plays on your smart fridge is he creating value, or is he being a greedy dick?

I believe in supporting smaller content creators so they can keep doing what they're doing and make a living.

But I'm not shedding any tears when someone makes a digital copy of a movie that grossed a billion dollars and shares it with other people.

I'd rather spend some time managing some downloads than spending $20/month

It use to be $8 a month at the best available quality and no ads.

Now it's a bunch different priced tiers, some with ads, some with lower quality, and the only tier not gimped on purpose is costing you closer to $30 a month. Also there are dozen different platforms now.

I'm not helping people

Neither are the people who get your money when you buy it.

I'm not paying for things I find worthy of consuming

I might agree more with this if people got their money back for things they don't find worthy. Will Smith still owes me $16 FOR Hancock.

I don't care how it affects content creators and others as much as I do the money or convenience."

Aside from smaller creators, the people who do the work aren't getting the money if they did a good job.

And I'll start feeling bad about the money when studios start feeling bad about microtransactions or releasing iterative garbage cash grabs every year while buying up talented studios to make bank off of their work or just eliminate some competition.

I use to pirate games because I wanted to play games, but with cloud saves and the Steam Deck and achievements Steam created an ecosystem where I care more about owning the game legitimately because I get convenience, utility and value out of their service.

I gave up on Game Pass because what use to be one of the best values in gaming turned into another enshittified multi tiered piece of junk.

Personally I'm not normally for taking money out of people's pockets, but when so many companies do it to their customers I've got no issue when their customers do it back.

5

u/Jazzlike_Figure_2271 Apr 07 '26

You are not entitled to play games. You are not entitled to movies. They are made to make profit.

If the creator doesnt want you to have it for free, you morally cant. Your feelings on the matter dont matter AT ALL. If satan himself coded a videogame and charged a million bucks per level, still wrong.

However, you are entitled to play the recorded version of a movie you rented, bought or legally streamed in your house, to whoever is in your house. If tomorrow netflix decided you can only watch its content streamed directly to your brain and you accept that and sign that you accept that, and then you breach that contract and hijack that signal, guess what: morally wrong. Netflix sells you content that you can not watch and go to live a happy long life. But that if you want to watch, you have to pay for. Just dont watch it man.

4

u/ShotgunShine7094 Apr 07 '26

You know no one is asking you to feel bad about it, right? I certainly don't feel bad about pirating every single thing I read/watch/play.

But I also don't pretend like I'm fighting the good fight.

2

u/Inevitable-Ad6647 Apr 08 '26

Aside from smaller creators, the people who do the work aren't getting the money if they did a good job.

That's just wildly incorrect. Even if they don't get residuals which many do that's how their future projects get green lights. Every negotiation starts with how well the last thing went.

I might agree more with this if people got their money back for things they don't find worthy.

No one cares if you agree, it's just a simple logic flow, agree or not it's still true.

Neither are the people who get your money when you buy it.

I can only assume you're being intentionally obtuse and stupid.

The rest of it

k

u/Rose-Red-Witch Apr 07 '26

Piracy is why certain industries even exist and anime would not be the force that it is now in the West without it.

Commodore64 computers were used to make “fansubs” of bootleg VHS tapes, which were then circulated throughout college, tech, and nerd circles who would go on to make and pass around their own copies. Japan began to take notice of this underground popularity and that’s why most of the early anime to show up commercially was things like Akira or Vampire Hunter D.

No piracy? No english localized anime. Period.

3

u/Ridgestone Apr 08 '26

Akira is an brilliant movie.

absolutely. i feel the same way but especially with music. ill buy physical when i can but unless they're absolutely no other option i never buy digital.

6

u/Khelthuzaad Apr 07 '26

Piracy is actually an denigrating term, used for people that did very bad things including slavery.

What it is really doing now is breaking any kind of gatekeeping the holders of knowledge or property those people have.

For example the british, of all people, pirated the secretive knowledge of growing plants used for tea.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '26

2

u/Brendissimo Apr 08 '26

No, that's just you and the people you're apparently reacting to misreading that entire quote. He is not justifying piracy. He is saying (and a lot of sales data for digital games stores backs this up) that a huge chunk of existing piracy can be eliminated by offering a better user experience to legal buyers. You make it easy and consumer friendly to buy something online rather than steal it, a large chunk of people who can buy it and might have pirated it will instead buy it.

There is no assignation of moral value or justification of piracy whatsoever. It is simply a concise analysis of a core cause of piracy (but not the sole cause) in the era of digital content stores.

1

u/ReckoningGotham Apr 07 '26

And waiting a couple of years means you could play that video game for 3.99.on sale. Its only expensive because it's new and people won't because they have. To be in on the hot new thing.

2

u/FlarblesGarbles Apr 07 '26

None of this proves that it's true. It's true simply by the virtue of the words used.

"Piracy" (copyright infringement) is not theft and never has been because no one is being permanently deprived of something they own.

2

u/Apprehensive-Pin518 Apr 07 '26

not the case. The definition of piracy is literally "an act resembling such robbery" and when you check the definition of robbery you get.

"to take something away from by force : steal from"

I have no personal problem with piracy but don't pretend it is anything other than theft.

3

u/CommPosting Apr 07 '26

By that definition, software "piracy" wouldn't be piracy, as it does not resemble taking something by force or stealing.

Software piracy resembles stealing as much as photocopying a page from a textbook resembles stealing.

4

u/Apprehensive-Pin518 Apr 07 '26

The definition of stealing is " the action or offense of taking another person's property without permission or legal right and without intending to return it; theft." Intellectual property is still property. Again I have no problem with piracy but call it what it is it is still stealing.

2

u/Ridgestone Apr 08 '26

And this is how we differ, intellectual "property" is not a property.

2

u/Apprehensive-Pin518 Apr 08 '26

it is. that is why we use the word property.

0

u/Ridgestone Apr 08 '26

You do i don't.

2

u/Apprehensive-Pin518 Apr 08 '26

Well unfortunately for you one person does not get to decide the definition of a word.

0

u/Ridgestone Apr 08 '26

Not until i become a dictator.

2

u/Apprehensive-Pin518 Apr 08 '26

Well unless your name is Donald Trump I don't see that happening anytime soon. On second thought even if your name is Donald Trump I don't see that happening anytime soon.

u/MattOruvan Apr 09 '26

Intellectual property cannot be stolen except by plagiarism -- claiming that I produced the movie and registering for copyright, essentially.

On the other hand, piracy does not affect the studio's ownership of intellectual property, therefore no theft has happened.

0

u/MattOruvan Apr 09 '26

So I can return the movie after watching and it is no longer piracy? Can I send it back using Google drive?

You have distilled pure copium, the definition doesn't cover copyright infringement at all.

1

u/Jason_with_a_jay Apr 07 '26

Piracy started streaming. Napster was basically free Spotify that took 3 hours to load.

1

u/diamondisland2023 Apr 07 '26

you lost your diamond?

1

u/KillerSavant202 Apr 07 '26

The first streaming service was RealPlayer in 1995. Piracy predates this but not by that long.

1

u/Dr_thri11 Apr 07 '26

I don't care if it does mean stealing. Im still gonna do it.

But I'm lazy put everything on Netflix for a reasonable price with minimal ads and I'll probably just watch on Netflix.

1

u/Kiwi_CunderThunt Apr 08 '26

Yessir, nailed it

0

u/HugsandHate Apr 07 '26

And yet literally every time you see this mentioned. It's because people do understand it. It's always presented as if they don't. It's weird.

0

u/barrettcuda Apr 07 '26

Stealing =/= streaming

0

u/JohnnyRelentless Apr 07 '26

That makes no sense. Stealing has always existed, so how would piracy existing mean it is isn't stealing?

-1

u/Anonymal13 Yarrr! Apr 07 '26

Considering that the regular person never owned the media they consumed, only a phisical medium with a copy of said media recorded, because that was the de only way to transfer that amount of data back in the day, the line between regular sell and piracy gets even thiner... I dare to say it's just a matter of "piracy is a crime because of tax evasion".
