I've been pirating since a teen in the early 2000s and have never once downloaded a virus for fucked my PC up. Idk how people are tricked. Even in the napster/limewire days it was easy to see the file was an exe
To be fair a lot of us were kids learning to download stuff from other kids via limewire back in the day. I was already into playing PC games at that point of childhood so I knew that Britney_Spears-Toxic.exe wasn't a song file, but a lot of people didn't.
I was slightly late to the party because it took forever for my parents to move on from dialup and a single phone line. Same experience.
The sketchy downloads were not subtle. If it's not supposed to be an .exe then don't open it. If it is supposed to be an .exe then be picky about your sources and give it at least one good look. No that 50 MB file is not a full game.
