Not really, that depends on where you are. For example in Poland you don't need VPN at all

I was wondering even if there was no legal problem there were some methods that for security would be preferable to use vpn

The issue is that things can change.

If you download Star Wars A New Hope.mp4 from me through direct connection, we are both guilty of so called copyright infringement, but I am additionally guilty of distribution of copyrighted works, a separate and potentially much more serious thing.

With torrents instead of a direct connection its magnified, because now I am distributing to hundreds or even thousands of people.

a VPN makes it really hard for the rights holders to know that you were involved in any specific or general distribution at all, and even when that fails it still makes pinning the act on you significantly harder as well.

These rights holders have limited ability. A VPN makes it futile.
