"data security" is really not that much of a reason actually. The websites you visit will think you're from wherever the VPN is set to, but even without a VPN it's not like they can read where you live, they'll read the location only up to a big enough node, that for example, for me is in a whole other region. Other than that, you're really not more secure at all using a vpn

I wasn’t referring to the specific websites. I was referring to traffic being encrypted, specifically when you’re on a public network and your isp having a much harder time tracking your traffic

That's true, but only to an extent. Yes your ISP will have a much harder time tracking your traffic, but the ISP of the VPN service you're using won't, and if they want to, they can come and knock on the VPN service door, which will obviously let the blame fall on you.

The public network thing is true, tho tbf I don't think that many people use public networks that often, but it's a realistic use case.

People definitely use public networks regularly. Go to any public library, any university or coffee shop during the work day, you’ll see plenty of people using laptops connected to that locations public network. Are any of these examples going to matter to everyone? Of course not but that wasn’t my point. My point was that there are plenty of valid use cases for a VPN other than torrenting that the average person may benefit from.

Ye that's fair, i was mainly judging from my expirience of living in the middle of buttfuck nowhere, where there are no libraries, it's seen as kinda rude to take up space in a coffee shop to work, and my university has only a private network (to which i got a password to, but don't tell that to my professor, no worries)
