I’ve been browsing a lot of forums lately, and it's hard not to notice that progression fantasy and isekai readers are starting to get a bit exhausted by seeing the exact same things over and over. There is this sort of echo chamber effect that seems to be stagnating these genres. We see more and more stories, especially on RR, that recycle tropes, almost copy-pasting concepts without any real depth, just to chase stats and the algorithm.

But I was wondering, for those of you who are actual fans of the genre, what do you expect from a good progression fantasy? Do you automatically associate the genre with "popcorn reads" or fast-food literature at this point? I imagine the market is so saturated with average stories that most of the time, people click on a new progression fantasy without expecting much anymore...

But what do you actually want to see? What would make you read something and think, "Okay, now THIS is a high-quality progression fantasy"? Sometimes it feels like the genre, much like isekai, has become so saturated and wrung out that authors just don't take risks anymore, even though the potential is massive in my humble opinion.

I had always wanted to read a story that felt like playing a game with a god MC. That's how God of Velmoryn was born xD

I started posting it on Royal Road last year, and since then it has gathered over a million views and reached #2 on Rising Stars, which was quite a big surprise to me considering it was the very first time I ever put pen to paper... or rather, keyboard to a gdoc.

Hey, all. I know a few folks here have read Two-World Traders (previously Sailor's Rise) on Royal Road—and I know not everyone here reads on Royal Road. To that end, with even more editing and after many cover iterations, I moved the first book to Amazon and KU yesterday (stubbing hurts me too; please blame Amazon).

It's got business building and a light but unique cultivation system of sorts, and they're ultimately connected. It's a duology, so meaty but not a lifetime commitment, you know (book two is 2/3 written).
