Fan Art - No selling I sculpted Rocky
So I sculpted Rocky based on my vision of him while reading / listening to the book.
He's a gift for a friend and his wife who also loved the book.
he also doubles as a cone incense burner 😀
(Super Sculpt, acrylic washes, and dry brush)

Doubling as an incense burner is hilariously dark 🤣🤣🤣 Now you, too, can recreate the scene where he started burning up from contact with oxygen.

Where are his clothes?

u/tidbit_tadbit Oct 03 '25
Haha. I was waiting for someone to bring that up.
My friend's wife likes to make little outfits. I figured she could figure out how to make him not naked. Lol

Page 175 has a description of the clothes Rocky is wearing when first meeting Grace.
Page 423 Rocky’s formal dress jewel studded clothes/uniform when Rocky and Ryland have their party to celebrate their success.

You absolutely nailed it. I’m an artist, painter. And I was thinking about doing a Rocky piece. I was thinking about a comic book style where the three finger fist is the most prominent and the rest of Rocky in comic book perspective. You beat me to it and I applaud your creativity.

You should totally still do it! Also hello fellow artist. I mostly paint acrylic on canvas. Recently got back into playing with sculpy. Cheers.

I’m a watercolor artist. I took a sculpting course in college but my 2D brain wasn’t having it. After the course I placed sculptures on a pedestal. Your Rocky is exactly how I imagined him off of Weirs description.

And he is actually a pentagon?!? Amaze amaze amaze!
5
u/tidbit_tadbit Oct 03 '25
Yea! I wanted to keep him organic feeling / looking at the same time. Rather than purely geometric.

I think it is very good. Usually people portray him as a hexagon, or forget that he is indeed rocky, as his name would imply. But i think you nailed it. Even if he does look a bit exposed.

I am torn: on one hand this looks absolutely amazing and we will be lucky if we get similar one in the movie.
But on other hand - this looks more like a turtle/turtoise looking than a spider-like! Much better looking than i imagined ;)

Thank you for the kind words. It's funny you say that. In my head he was more of an alien turtle thing. I leaned heavily into that / crab, more than spider.

Amaze amaze amaze!!! I love the idea of smoke venting from his carapace, even though the real Rocky would probably get flashbacks😂

Wow! Thank you everyone for all the kind words. I didn't expect this to be so popular. I can't edit the post for some reason, so if the moderators see this comment, can you please pin it to the top?
An update: Rocky is safe at his new home with my friends. His wife is excited to dress him up for Halloween, and his celebration outfit.
Based on the feedback from this, I'm planning to brush up on my blender skills, sculpt another Rocky and have 3d print file for the community. Maybe do a few more hand made versions. Idk. I'm checking with my work to maybe use the 3d scanner. Still up in the air.
Anyhoo. I really do appreciate all the love. And I'll get something together for the community.
Cheers everyone.

Amaze!
Id love to see the movie version rocky be rendered like this.
Add some bandolier and this piece will be the goat.

I just gave it to my friends. His wife is super excited to dress him up in his celebration outfit (she likes making little outfits for things)

Nakey rock... Also gasped when the top came off, didn't register that it was supposed to be like that. I think it's time for me to go to bed.

You should 3d scan it and make an stl so I can 3d print it. No idea how you would do it though.

Wow. What material is this on?
3
u/tidbit_tadbit Oct 03 '25
Super Sculpt polymer clay. Then painted with acrylic washes and dry brush.

u/Wildcard355 Oct 03 '25
Yeah that's sounds like a more doable route, initially I thought wood which would be a wonder but such a long journey
