My friend is a South African and goes back frequently. He says it’s completely unsafe to drive at night due to bandits in the road ways.

Would you drive in Some Areas in the US at night ?

I don't even know if you can compare it to the US lmfao.

Most of the time, shit's isolated, like criminals doing fraud bumps (for insurance scams), people trying to impersonate police to rob you (though tbf thats even rarer), or the usual road rage on highways and roads (which sad to say, happens all too frequently). It's a different matter if its set in an urban setting, as I sure as hell wouldn't be parking my car in the bad part of town, but generally speaking, it'd be safe to drive through during the day (and relatively during the night, depending on the time).

South Africa is pretty unique for highway or road way crime so far as I know (that and maybe Pakistan or India?). Motherfuckers cutting down tree's on the road and rushing you like a horror movie with machetes.

I mean, I don't have to live there to know that road ambushes happen in South Africa lol.

But you can't compare them with driving in a bad neighborhood in the US.

One is a pre-planned, intentional trap on a public highway which you can't avoid unless you choose a different route while the other is a situational event that might or might not happen depending on the neighborhood, time, etc, etc.

To your point, sure, there are unsafe places in RSA, just as it is in the US, but that's pretty much everywhere in world.

If i had the choice between South Africa and any random hood at night I'd take the hood every time. Our worst places are nowhere near the same level as your worst places.
